Who does Finn Maginness go to next week?

It's easy to say Bont, but I reckon Bont would destroy him inside 50.

Libba is too good inside for Finn to completely shut him down.

I'd love to see him go to Treloar. Yep, he'd do a good job and shut him out, but Macca & Bailey Smith would be the ones to stand up.

I imagine he will go to bont and if Bont goes forward he'll switch to Libba

That would work out very well for us. If we're smart, we can use that to our advantage and play mind games with the Hawks midfield.

Hope Naughton has learnt his lesson from Sam Taylor as he’s going to need to play a defensive role on Sicily.

Amazing how often we play the hawks late in the season in Tassie, last round in 22, second last in 21 cost us ta top 4 finish now 3 last round in 23. This game spells danger with a capital D. the Bont will get a hard tag.
Bont should be able to monster Maginess physically if he goes to him. They will definitely try it on although who did they try to tag Bont with last time? Hopefully Hawks have a let down after getting up to smash the Pies

Nash will go to Bont.

Two very different types of interceptors. Taylor does his best work out bodying his opponent, Sicily is a master at reading the play and being in position to mark the dump kick just outside 50.

I’m going to cry if we let Sicily do what he wants, surely we’ve seen this enough with these type of players to know we just have to put work into him. Can’t just expect us to ‘do our own thing’ need to specifically target him.

Knowing us it’s unlikely though

Sicily has been a star and it wouldn’t be inconceivable that we bring in someone like Raak to tag him - probably 200-1 but worse things have happened.

Khamis would be ideal size-wise, or Bailey Williams playing as an attacking winger.

But in saying that, Hawks and Cats have a whole strategy to get guys like Sicily and Stewart free. Sicily is likely to start on Lobb and then peel off as soon as there is broken play. You can't tag him because then he goes to another fwd creating a 1on 2 with a spare defender, and you lose your forward structure.

If they want to sit Nash on Bont again so be it. Libba didn’t play when we beat them in Rd 6 and they only narrowly won the clearances. Think our midfield will be fine even if they go the hard tag again. If we move the ball fast again and get Naughton, Jamarra and Lobb in one in ones against their defenders we’ll cause them a bit of grief.

I’m of the firm belief we’re going to need to play with 3 tall defenders if we’re serious about beating anyone decent. 2 keys might work against the average to mediocre teams but I highly doubt it will get the job done against quality.

The issue with Keath’s disposal is a valid one but in a scenario where neither Gardner or Bruce are in the team, you can afford to carry one poor kick in the backline. When you have multiple in the one side, it becomes a magnified problem.

Keath just needs to take a leaf out of Jones’ book. He knows his limitations and looks to clear the ball as long as possible when he receives it in open play rather than bite off more than he can chew.
How many of the other challengers play with 3 genuine tall defenders 196cm plus?

You will find none, as hardly any of the top teams have more than 2 genuine KPF's 196cm plus.

All it does unless they are highly mobile and skilled is create space on the fast break from opposition's backline transitioning to the forward line or makes your transition both crab like and regularly breaking down as they do hot have the speed to break down the opposition on transition nor skill

Sure, but they do all have two key defenders and another 1-2 players around 190cm+ range that can play tall/are good overhead.

Jones and one of O’Donnell/Keath surrounded by Duryea (181cm), Johannisen (181cm), Vandermeer (182cm), Richards and Dale (both generously 188cms) would be the smallest and probably least impactful backline in the air of the top 8. Personally, I’m not keen on going into the heat of finals with a novelty backline. O’Donnell next to Jones & Keath is the closest setup to the contenders.

Our hopes of a balanced backline this year improbably rest on O’Donnell’s ability to go from local level fast bowler to a solid AFL level two way medium defender between February and September.

You’ll also find that we have no medium sized intercept defenders (other than Richards who is only 185cm) to carry the burden of only having 2 key talls. From the contenders, the following players can play on guys taller than 190cm.

Pies - Moore, Murphy, Howe, Maynard
Port - Aliir, Mckenzie, Bergman, Burton
Lions - Andrews, Payne, Lester
Demons - May, Lever, Smith (or Petty)
Saints - Howard, Battle, Wilkie
Giants - Taylor, Buckley, Himmelberg, Haynes
Cats - Esava, De Koning, Stewart, Kolo

They all have 2 key defenders?

Collingwood Moore and their CHB Murphy same height as Mc Crae

Port Adelaide ???

St.Kilda ???

Carlton Weitering and???

Sydney ???

That is 5 of the top 10 that have 1 at best.

With Jones and O'Donnell we literally had the tallest KPD'S of any club in the top 10.

You don't think that this obsession with 3 talls down back has not also co incided with our worst ball movement from the backline over the last 2 years.

Richards is 188, but we actually do not have good intercept marks on our list. Keath is not helping that neither at all is Gardiner and both are liabilities in transition
