I don't think I've seen a player kick the ball higher than Waterman. Needs to be in the forward 50 so he can just kick goals because field kicking and decision making isn't great. Seemed last year he was very conservative and went short/wide which is fine, but last night wasn't very helpful at all.

Schoey looked really hampered by ribs last night. At the ground he went to ground behind play when just being bumped. I'm sure he'll get up, but don't think he'll be fully fit.

Cole for anyone, watching him at the game he seems totally dis interested, just stands in space not contributing anything and goes at half pace at best when it's his turn. Rarely attacks the ball at the contest and throws out one handed tackles at best.

Think we need to go 2 rucks to tag Gawn out of the game this week. As much as we have a 6 day break. Melbourne have a 6 day break coming from Gold Coast, then to us. A lot of air miles for sure in a short period of time.

Think its a good game to shorten our defense up and give Rotham another game

IN: Hickey, Rotham
OUT: Waterman, Schofield

I've been critical of Allen the past few weeks but he deserves to keep his spot. Only change for me is Rioli in for Waterman.

It would be nice if we could get Jetta a few more disposals on nights like tonight. Need his ball use across the hbf. Shep is getting a lot more of the ball which is awesome but he's not as damaging (nobody is to be fair as Hurn often won't take the riskiest option).
Shep could be challenged to try bite off the risky kick or use more run and carry. He is a neat kick and quick (swervability?). Predictably goes sideways or backwards. Maintains possession but doesn't gain territory.

Out: Allen (managed)
In: Hickey

B: Sheppard, Schofield, Hurn
HB: Duggan, McGovern, Jetta
C: Gaff, Shuey, Sheed
HF: Cripps, Darling, Venables
F: Ryan, Kennedy, Vardy
R: Hickey, Yeo, Redden
I: Cole, Waterman, Hutchings, Petruccelle
E: Rotham, Masten, Mellen, Ah Chee (held over)

Allen was wandering around the changerooms with a big ice pack on his calf, might be time to give him a spell. Back to the two-ruck system that served us so well against Gawn in the prelim.

I’d like to find someone to come in for Waterman, only because I think that change will make us too tall, but I can’t. Plus I don’t like dropping young players after only a week, so we’ll just have to make do. Masten was apparently dropped to go work on something, he didn’t get a chance to do that this weekend so he can’t come back in.

Schoey looked very sore, Rotham would probably be the man to come in for him if he’s unavailable.

The WAFL bye followed by the Thursday night game means that our standby emergency is probably going to miss two weeks of footy, which isn’t ideal.

Rioli to have a week in the WAFL. No sense in throwing him straight back into the AFL (and onto the Optus surface) without any match fitness.

Out: Allen, Waterman*

In: Hickey, Rioli*

If he’s 100% fit. Would prefer he get a week away from Optus surface.

After Max Gawn this week bring Allen back into the side at the expense of Vardy.

As Miguel Sanchez mentioned above Schofield didn't look 100 % during the game so keep an eye on him, as he looked to have hurt himself early in the game, with that body clash.

Important first quarter as the Melbourne players face their own " demons " as they come back to play on their 2018 seasons graveyard.

The Preliminary Final assault and unmerciful beating last year has left them with a gaping, bleeding, infected, festering wound, thats yet to fully heal, so it's important we get off to a great start and bring the " ghosts of games past" back to mind **** with them.

Cant see Rioli walking straight into the team after such a long time off he need a game in the WAFL first.

Hickey will be an important inclusion to bolster the attack on Max Gawn, so I suspect Waterman may be the one to give way as far as team balance goes.

Melbourne have a few injury worries of their own, from yesterdays game, to worry about.

Ins : Hickey for Waterman.

The tricky one will be how we juggle things if Schofield is a non starter.

The six day break doesn't help us , the only redeeming factor, from the short turn around is that Melbourne are in the same situation.

Seems that we say this every week , but its an important game , as we need another win to stay in touch with top four aspirations.

I don't care if we keep wining ugly and scrape some more uninspiring bland wins together in the front of the year, it set's the base for a full tilt at the end of the season, in the run home towards finals , when NN , Tommy B , and the Willie join the fray.

Allen offered nothing so he has to be out for Hickey.

Could drop Vardy for Rioli too and play 1 ruck.

Looking forward to Hickey and Rioli coming back!!! Especially Rioli. Boy we've missed his flair, skill and class. BADDDD
Allens always going to look like shit when the ball is kicked over his head rather than out in front.

I actually thought Allen was ok. Same as last week. Gets back a lot when playing ruck and spoils or fills space.

That said, I think we need 2 genuine size rucks this week against Gawn. If he can dominate with hitouts to advantage (and the midfield is Melbourne's strength) we might be in some bother.

Allen for hickey, then Waterman for Rioli if he is ready.

If Willie is fit play him. Don't waste a week in the WAFL. He's a class or four above that level so it won't do him much good.
I tend to agree - he had a great preseason fitness base and while we wont get the midfield minutes i was hoping for to start with he should be fit enough for a forward role.

Haha was wondering which low-possession gathering player would be the next bloke fans would turn on now that Masten is out. Bad luck Tom Cole!
Tom has had a pretty ordinary few weeks

Players do that - their form rises and falls - when their form is good there wont be calls to send them to the magoos - when their form is bad - there will.

This is not a mystical concept.

Tom cole as a defender can get <10 possies and play an excellent game or he can get <10 possies and be awful

Last night was the latter.

I thought he was pretty good defensively last night, and I've been critical of him of late too. Thought he was solid, saw him win quite few contests, get to the right spots to keep players accountable. Maybe I missed some terrible clangers kicks, missed tackles...?

If you have any examples other than 'poor form' that I missed, go for it. That'd make calls to drop him sound less mystical, and would be more productive than a lecture on what 'form' means in any case. :)

like i mentioned in positives v negatives, I don't think Waterman played particularly badly but I don't really see why he was selected to play that role. Ah Chee and MAllen have been killing it. Hopefully Rioli is ready.

Waterman started strongly but some of his defensive efforts were Masten like and led to saints goals. He looked too slow - not agile enough to be a mid of defender - problem is forwards need to work back as well.

I expect your right with Hickey in for Allen

I expect we go 2 genuine rucks against Gawn so Hickey in makes sense

I missed the after game bit with Oscar but makes sense to manage him out. He will be keen but we don’t want to get him too tired this early

Agree on Schofield. I would say he looked bloody sore. I am noticing his closing speed has slowed this year so pretty keen to bring in Rotham as Dees have not been playing 2 genuine talls up front

While I want Rioli in, he has not shown the ability to warrant auto select with no games in 2 months.

Waterman deserves more than a week. Many calling for his dropping were outraged at Brander only getting 1 game!

Just saw it in the background as Richardson and Darcy were interviewing Cripps. Had the massive ice pack on the left calf.

Probably one of those things where most players have some area of concern at the end of the game. But Simmo hinted earlier in the week that they needed to be mindful of getting him through the year.
