I wasn't watching that closely, but felt like he was taking mastens role at times.

Obviously easier when the contested possies are better, but felt like we covered that 2nd wing a bit better tonight and got more positive movement from it.

It would be nice if we could get Jetta a few more disposals on nights like tonight. Need his ball use across the hbf. Shep is getting a lot more of the ball which is awesome but he's not as damaging (nobody is to be fair as Hurn often won't take the riskiest option).

IN Hickey Rioli
OUT
Vardy OAllen

TEAM v. MELBOURNE

FB Hurn Schoey Duggan
HB Sheppard Gov Jetta
C Sheed Redden Gaff
HF Venners Darling Rioli
FF Cripps Kennedy Ryan
R Hickey Shuey Yeo

I Cole Hutchings Waterman Petch

E AhChee Masten Rotham OAllen MAllen Vardy

All we need is Naitanui and Barrass - Both will make a HUGE difference.

We're lacking in speed so we can not drop Venables or Petrol or Cripps (not that either of them deserve to be dropped)
So if Rioli comes in i think it will have to be Waterman or Allen to go out -prob Allen who needs a rest (JK / JD can ruck in the forward half)
If Hickey is fit, he comes in for Vardy

That will make us much more balanced i think

The reason I ask is because every game this year (except for two in which he was still in the top 5) Masten has been the top performer on the field for 'Distance covered at high speed'.

This week it was Hutchings, who has never appeared in the top 5 for that stat this year. Impossible for me to tell having missed a lot of the first hald but I was wondering if he was pushing back into defence like Masten used to, maybe a change of roles when he doesn't need to tag?

Indeed.

For the defensive runner job Hutchings can do it plus actually has a contested game and can tag.

Out: Cole, Vardy, Waterman
In: Rotham, Hickey, Rioli (if fit)

Cole has been poor for weeks. Rotham showed he can play at this level and can play tall. Hurn to play loose in defence again. Vardy was ok today but Hickey deserves to come back on form. Rioli at 80% is better than Waterman at 100%. Pet, Crippa and Ryan can all rotate through the midfield and let Rioli play fwd only.

So Hickey takes on little old Gawn by himself?

Just like i said before the game

Ins
Rioli, Hickey
Outs
Waterman, Vardy.

Oscar stays until Nic Nat comes in.

As for Cole. There isnt anyone else for the small defender role. Bringing in Rotham or other candidates will only make backline too tall.

Friday game will work against Willie I reckon. He would need to be signed off by Wednesday to play this week I would think, so suspect he may play minutes in the WAFL game.

Boy I can’t wait to have him back.

As such, I would suspect the changes will be:
In: Hickey
Out: Allen (rested)

It’s going to be a tight, contested battle. Probably won’t be high scoring, which will please the masses on a Friday night. Melbourne will try and clog it up as much as possible so we will need to push hard to expose the defensive pressure Oliver, Viney & Jones do away from the contest.

Probably will go in unchanged, but if Hickey and/or Rioli are ready I'd like to see:
OUT: O.Allen, Waterman
IN: Hickey, Rioli

Allen is due for a rest and I don't like the idea of him going up against Gawn in the ruck.
Cole to have a job on Garlett. If he has another down week I'd bring Rotham in.
