I think Sando's comments regarding Johnston and Grigg were made simply to keep them hungry and prevent them from getting complacent. That said Johnston has a lot of work in front of him if he's going to kick four each week for the remainder of the season.:p

I'm not sure that he did it to the point that it cost games. We lost games based on missing shots on goal, left key players unchecked and didn't work both ways. Even when we played badly we could have won upto 5 more games with straight kicking. The other games were match-day cockups.

If you look at teams with a large youth profile and a lack of seniors there is overwhealming evidence to show that losses result. We never went into games with more than 9 or so under 50 gamers. He also dropped Vince early and eventually Reilly. Johncock was dropped and fans protested........

I don't think it was an overriding policy to the detriment of the overall team. But a way to subtly cancel gold passes with the least amount of friction. And a way to set up team selections for the future, with the really young guys there aren't "fan favourites" or players that are part of the furniture at the club. Selections purely on merit become much easier.

I really hope you're right, but we'll have to wait for next year before we see whether it's true or not. Although he certainly had no problem keeping Johncock out of the team despite the fan's love for him.

Would you prefer if he'd said this:

"Grigg & LJ will play all 4 games remaining, irrespective of their form, so they may as well not try while they are out there."
Of course not. What I would have preferred is that he not imply this to Mackay/Porps/Reilly/VB in the first place.

I'd agree his kicking isn't brilliant, might just be the pace of the game forcing him to rush, but his hands in close are great for someone so inexperienced.
Exactly. He is a very promising inside midfielder, but at the end of the day, he still really needs to work on his disposal and tank, though one would have thought these will improve as he becomes more experienced and has a few more preseasons.

In - Sloane, Kerridge
Out - McKernan, Thompson

I agree with the outs Thompson needs to be rested and Mckernan has done his dash. I also wouldn't mind seeing Graham in the mix which might mean dropping Lyons as well.

Sando quote from today's presser in relation to Grigg: "Like Lewis Johnston, he's got to back that up this week – you can't just come in for one game play really well and then have a stinker,” said Sanderson.
"That's the expectations on our young players"

So given Porplyzia/Mackay/Thompson have been carried through long form slumps of multiple games at different stages of the season, we can safely assume this rule only applies to the younger players:rolleyes:.

Looks like Sloaney will play which is great news:thumbsu:.

Thompson has surely got to be the one to make way. He's been down on form for a while now, something is clearly not right. Hopefully it won't be Lyons but given our selections this year it won't surprise me if he is dropped, he didn't have the best game last week but Thompson barely got more touches than him despite having more than an extra quarter on the ground.

I'm getting really sick of hearing this shit from Sando; it's pure lip service, and it angers me that he's either saying it anyway, or worries me that he's apparently that lacking in awareness and perception that he can't see it.

He has massive double standards amongst the playing list, and that's a big problem for a person in a leadership position.

Conversely, if your one of a number of talented young players vying for limited spots the coach is being clear and precise with what he wants, where you stand and the ball is in your court.

Which is a tremendous culture.

Except he isn't clear and concise with what he words - and when he is, his actions don't reflect his words.

I am so sick of hearing about how great it is to have young players dominating in the SANFL (especially last year) and how fantastic it is that they're putting pressure on the incumbents - when they rarely get picked at the expense of the incumbents (and doing it now that the season is shot doesn't change that fact) unless it's through injury.

His message might be right, but his actions don't reflect it - and that's a problem.

I know he's not awesome but seriously can Angus Graham be any worse than 2013 Jacobs? I'd say Graham would grab the opportunity. At least he has a bit of mongrel.

I think his fitness is far and away his biggest issue, he genuinely seems to struggle in the second halves of games, this would have a massive effect on decision making and his ability to execute his skills. Bit of a concern that after 3 preseasons his fitness is still pretty average.

you sound logical. Therefore the selectors will not do that!

Im hoping LJ is still in the team, after only kicking 4 goals.

Would be more of a concern if our entire squads fitness wasn't a problem this year. I think it's clear that the coaches completely ballsed our pre-season up, and we've been chasing our tails ever since.

Sando as a new coach has to contend with a conservative management, assistant coaches and a football dept with many from a previous regime and in addition a conservative fan base (the Apricot Slice brigade) who have their favourites and love their experienced players. By their nature conservatives don't like change.

I've mentioned this before - I really hope it's the case.

I was a Craigy fan until his last year (he lost me with that stupid DVD), and I still quite like him and think he had a lot of great messages (and some really shit ones).

But I've thought for a while that Craig was such a strong character that he's left his imprint so deeply ingrained into the Crows and the staff that are around from his tenure, that we're still almost stuck in his system.

Sando as our Coach lives or dies next year - if I was him, I wouldn't be doing that on the back of Neil Craig's theories, or his people.

Get rid of Clarke, Camporeale, Bickley and find the best people to put around him (preferably, without an AFC background).

Forgetting the other stuff with Trigg, he's a Craig disciple as well, so if that's a factor, move him along as well - or just ignore him when it comes to onfield stuff.

Beat me to it. So basically if you're an older player, you can spud it up all year with little fear of being dropped. However if you're a young player, you must have breakout games every week to maintain your position in the side. What a tremendous culture for a young player to be exposed to.

I made a point the other day about Sando appearing to have gold passes for some and a glass ceiling for others.

Sando's quick to drop certain players at the first opportunity while others have the luxury of retaining their spot in the team despite some very average form.

Hopefully once 2013 is done all gold passes from 2012 are revoked

This may be a load of crap, but I think I remember reading somewhere that when he first came to the club, he was blown away by the fitness requirements, and really struggled with it. Maybe he's just someone who struggles to gain fitness. I guess you could look at someone like Danger who took a few years to really build his fitness base.

Sturt's in/ outs have been named.

In: Kerridge
Out: Jaensch (Crows).

Ughughughugh.
He better not make the 22... Hope he's only EMG...

If he's in, omfg I will smash something... KERRIDGE SHOULD BE IN FOR CROWS DUTY NOT JAENSCH!!!

Agreed. Jaensch is an absolute spud whereas Kerridge has shown something that resembles a good footballer.

Before everyone goes berserk about Lyons, remember he was looking very sore last week

this. Need to branch out a bit otherwise we have guys finish and start coaching with the crows. they dont bring anything new to the table and we can't progress as much as possible.

Yeah it's a definite possibility, players like Porps and Pets have never been able to build a tank to play through the midfield full time, same with Stiffy (although lifestyle may have contributed to that), but it would be a shame if he can't get his fitness to the level required, he looks like he was born to play in the centre square, but if he can't play a full game he may struggle to play games going forward unless he contributes consistently in the forward line.
