i don't know why people are always against JVR rucking myself, i reckon it suits him fine. it's not like he's the best forward in the comp that needs protecting or something.
i'd have JVR go back to backing up the ruck, leave Johnson in the VFL as his reserve, and just play Fritsch and Jeffo as the other forwards. with the extra tall Fritsch gets pushed up the ground into a role that doesn't suit him.

I think people hate it because he doesn't do anything when he does it, it's not like he gets involved in the play around the ground and he's still working out how to be a forward aswell.

i'm not too bothered by how he goes when in the ruck, most teams just use some mung bean to give a chop out for the ruckman anyway, and Johnson is no better at it based on what i've seen.

i guess it all comes down to what you think JVR is. some people obviously think JVR can become a gun FF if just used that way, and that's fine, maybe he will, but i just think he's more of a second tall workhorse type myself. he backed up the ruck last year and still managed to kick around 30 goals, maybe that's just all he is.

I don't mean in the ruck I mean he gets 0 disposals while he's rucking as well so it just takes him outta the game
I agree about him as a KPF though. Too one dimensional

Man Fullarton must be a dud if he's not even being remotely considered in that FWD/ruck role.

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com
He's a less skilled version of that other recent guy we had who was a Temu Jack Watts. He's wildly uncompetitive in the ruck in the VFL which should be impossible. He's just a tall forward who is like a 2.5/10 at all the things a tall guy does.

I think some ITK type guys last season calling for his inclusion in the team was the only thing of value that came from him being recruited. ****ing funny stuff.

Boggles the mind what we saw in Fullarton. Almost seems like:

"We need a forward who can play some ruck"
"Brisbane are a good team, they have Daniher playing the role we are looking for, who's behind him that cant get a game?"
"Ummmm, Tom Fullarton?"
"Cool, well its settled then, we are trading for Tom Fullarton"
"Shouldn't we watch some film on him first?"
"Nah"

Agree that it's dumb, but at least it didn't really cost anything.

Complete waste of a list spot for 2 years. Wont ever play a game for the club. Not often you see a club trade for a player on an AFL list and he doesnt play a game for them while remaining relatively healthy like Fullarton has.

Hey apologies for the intrusion, Supercoach lurker here - wth is going on with May? Is he ready to go? 😅
Fractured larynx – won't play this week, and would be surprised if he plays next week. Shouldn't be out too long though.

Gawn missed six with the same injury during the PS, but apparently May's isn't as bad.

Against Xerri, Campbell is a probably worth a shot.

And for JVR fans, if he has another null game like last week, I would point him in the direction of the VFL.
Same for Fritsch.

Perform or play VFL!

Historically Goodwin has gone smaller at MARVEL pretty often. Campbell is injury backup, so really shouldn't be playing unless Gawn is out. Also not sure why Gawn would need a VFL level old bloke to help him against another ruck?
Because Xerri is a brute and usually batters Max around.

Which has less impact on the outcome than just about anything else.
Max dominated the GWS ruck, but we still lost the clearance count and the game.
We're already top heavy with Johnson(or Turner), Van Rooyen and Jefferson, plus Fritsch.
Bringing Campbell in means we have a bench spot consumed by KP players.
We got overrun by GWS in time on of every quarter.
Less bench capacity for mids = less energy for late in quarters.

Modern footy is a ground ball game where pressure and skill execution are two incredibly important factors.
Old, slow back up rucks bring neither pressure or good skills.

JVR or Johnson/Turner are more than capable of giving Max a chop out when needed, and even then ruck contest dominance is a low factor in overall results.

We need less talls.
One key forward, one key forward/back-up ruck, and Fritsch is easily tall enough to take a few marks or at least prevent too many intercept marks.

Give me a Kynan Brown who can apply pressure, get in space, hit a target and give a mid a chop out over another big anyday

Brown is likely not available this week apparently. Went in for scans on Monday.

Fair point.

I was using him more as an example and the first small player that wasn't in the 22 that came to mind. I know the cupboard is bare with Pickett suspended, Spargo and others injured, and the general lack of talent we have in the FP/HFF positions, but even our spudliest of smalls has to have more +ve impact than 3 talls all jumping for the same mark.

Give some games to Woewodin, try Bowey forward, something has to be better than 3 talls + Fritsch + Gawn resting

Yep, I would have loved Brown in this week. Woewodin is too vanilla, I'm happy to leave him and Billings out pretty much permanently. Spargo played on the weekend, but you'd think they wouldn't rush him again after last year.

Won't happen, but if I was going nuts I'd have Mentha coming in for Johnson and Sestan in for Howes, with the option to play Bowey forward.

I've already reached the acceptance stage about losing this week.

Had the sugar hit of all the debutants etc last week and nearly pulled it off against a much better side – wouldn't be at all surprised if we come out a bit flat this week.

Changes wise, expecting it'll just be Turner in for AJ.

I expect us to lose tbh, just can't rate us above the bottom six this year. Hope I'm wrong but there are still so many issues.

I reckon we'll smash them, then get absolutely tanked off bathwater, lose our next eight on the trot, and have some mid-season scandal involving a punch-on or a drug bust or similar. Can't wait.

Think we're in for sone classic mid-table mediocrity this year.

SQUAD NAMED
