Changes vs Pies

There's no dropping Jetta or Bennell this week, anyone in that camp can **** off :)

They cop it so ****ing easily around here, they played amazingly on Friday.
actually agree with ya hear mate, those 2 are scape goats for poor performances but both of them did there job really well on the weekend, bennel added some run and class off the hbf, and jetta was really clean in tight and helped get the ball outside to the runners

I don't think you see what I am getting at.

Cloke and Dawes are two real 'gorilla' forwards.

How would bringing in a 90 kilo first gamer nullify them?

Warnock has the strength to go with the 'gorillas', that's why I think he will come into consideration.

I'm not sure Rivers has the strength to go with one of them, Joel Macdonald may be an option though.

agree with you i was thinking the same thing this morning warnock has to come in to play on dawes becauser rivers and macdonald dont have the strength, if were trying to win warnock plays, if you wanna develop a kid.. bring in the young mcdonald...

Frawley should play full back on Dawes and if he doesn't have the strength I'm not sure Warnock will. Rivers should play on Cloke, who gets most of his marks from leads anyway, if Rivers gets out bodied once or twice then it's still costing us less than a couple of Warnock turnovers. McDonald should be an option to take Leigh Brown, but I think we can cover him with a mixture of Joel Macdonald and Martin resting out of the ruck.

Tapscott anyone? Listed as 2 weeks last week, it's a Monday match ...??
Did it against the saints so QB game would only be 3 weeks out, if it was a decent hammy he might be one more away. Interesting to see if he'd be straight in anyway, probably depends on how others play. If his fit this week you'd think it would be better for him to have a run at Casey.

I hear what you are saying regarding Warnock. But Collingwood's great strength is its ability to apply defensive pressure in its forward 50. The last thing we need is Warnock with ball in hand at any time in this area. If we are to have any hope we need to be able to clear our defensive 50 with run and clean delivery.

Joel MacDonald actually did a number on Cloke when we played them round 2 last year. I'd give him first crack, with Jared coming in as third man up.

The Pies are your bitches (pardon my french) so it could be a good game to rest a few players ;) That'd get right up their nose as well hehe.

Joking aside, belief can do a lot to a group of youngsters, and whilst the Pies look stronger than ever, they did last year as well and you stuck it to them not once, but twice!, so there is no reason why your mob shouldn't honestly believe that they can take it to them again this week. And I'm sure there will be 15 other clubs getting behind your lot just like last year again too :p:thumbsu:

But please, a 1 point victory this time!

Unfortunately I don't think we'll have the winners to beat them. Last year Davey and Jamar were instrumental because they are capable of turning games almost singlehandedly (less often for Aaron). Bit like the Hawks today with Cyril on fire early and then Hodge, Roughy and Burgoyne stepping it up late you need more than competitors you need someone capable of grabbing a game and lifting the rest of the side.

I hope we can really battle it out well, but Collingwood were asleep in round 2 last year and on QB'day they kicked horribly (partly due to good pressure forcing their shots to be from wide places). I don't see a repeat of either of those things happening.

Warnock has strength? If he really did then he wouldn't be giving away countless free kicks by molesting his opponent because he can't outbody them.

This.

Bartram in for either Sylvia or, if Sylvia is fit, one of Evans or Nicholson.

Couldn't have written it any better myself and it's a reason why Strauss would be the first player I would drop. Poor decision makers in the back half = disaster when playing a side like Collingwood.

just watched the replay, strauss was good, ffs give him a chance to back it up!

I was really impressed with Strauss. Didn't know what to make of him in his first 2 games but he's really come on in the last year or so.

Strauss, Tapscott and Grimes running out of half back for the next 10 years :thumbsu:

Pies could have all of Shaw, Thomas and Beams out.

Still plenty of quality in their side obviously, but two of their best three there.

Wow if they were to be missing Shaw and Beams on top of Swan and Jolly (confirmed) and Thomas (assumed), that would be pretty significant. A lot of thier core players there.

I'm assuming Bartram will be fit to play, so he will come in and play on Krakour. Sylvia has a few extra days to get his leg right, and we need him to play, so I'm also assuming he will be right to go.

So the only change I would make is:

IN

Bartram

OUT

Evans

As good as Evans has been, I feel Nicholson has been a great sub for us and will play that role again on Queens Birthday. But Bartram seems like a very good match up for Krakour, so Evans is the unlucky one.

Petterd can come in for Sylvia if he doesn't pull up.

Warnock, Blease and Petterd as emergencies. Blease isn't far away, and will get his chance soon enough. Warnock could be a smokie to come in and play on Dawes. Just seems like a perfect match up for us.

Gawn stays as a tall target in the goalsquare and relief ruck for Stef. At least until Jamar is fit.

Everyone else played there part against the Bombers, so deserve a spot. Including Strauss, who I can't believe has copped some criticism on this board. I thought he looked very composed and his kicking is exactly what we need coming out of defense. Set up many attacks from the back half. Will be an important player for us in the future.

Tough to expect us to win against the Pies, but with Swan, Jolly and Beams out, and surely Thomas has to go, we should be competitive.

Joel MacDonald actually did a number on Cloke when we played them round 2 last year. I'd give him first crack, with Jared coming in as third man up.

A big no to the clanger king Warnock. On the above, Cloke is at a whole new level & so is Collingwood from the start of last season, read these stats from the Robbo article about Cloke & Dawes agaisnt the saints

On Saturday night, Cloke and Dawes, took 16 marks between them, eight of them contested, kicked five goals, and underlined yet again the power of two premier marking forwards.

As a one-two tall forward combination, they are the best in the league.

Cloke's performance against St Kilda was monstrous and, if it's possible after a stellar 2010, he is bigger, stronger and clearly a more difficult opponent for smaller defenders.
--------------
Cloke's confidence must be absolute.

He leads contested marks by 16 from West Coast's Josh Kennedy and contested marks inside 50m by seven from Hawk Lance Franklin and Richmond's Jack Riewoldt.

Cloke basically averages 4 contested marks a game, 2 of those inside 50. I think Frawley has to go to him, leaving Rivers to Dawes & JMac to the weakest (if they have one, maybe just whichever one stays closest to goal) small forward so he can chop out for Riv.

Agreed that Bartram only other in if fit, Petterd has good recent record against the Pies so he's in for Sylvia only if required.

At the end of that Robbo article, he said Rivers and Frawley were the best match up for Dawes and Cloke so far, which I would have to agree with. (am I right in saying Rivers/Cloke and Frawley/Dawes?, Rivers being a better one on one spoiler, but Frawley able to expose Dawes for speed. JMac third up against both)

Bennell to Didak or Krakouer, Nicholson/Bartram to the other.

We do match up well against Collingwood

Bartram if fit should come in, although I wouldn't be against him getting a run in the VFL, giving Evans/Strauss another game.

Petterd emergency for Sylvia.

Rivers not having gym arms seems to worry people a lot more than the fact that he rarely gets outmuscled for a mark.
Surprising really when you look at Dustin Fletcher, who I can barely remember getting out marked due to lack of strength in 15 years. Also that if we are playing well enough to be in the game it will require Collingwood to make Cloke play CHF and push up and therefore limit his one on one strength battles.

I'm much more worried about our midfield (who still got beat by the dons) and been able to sustain a forward press and keep the ball in the forward line than what our backline are doing.

Pies could have all of Shaw, Thomas and Beams out.

Still plenty of quality in their side obviously, but two of their best three there.

Haven't heard anything regards to Shaw. He will most certainly play.

Swan is off to Arizona so definite out.

Beams is certain to miss with a foot injury and if he is any chance of playing, he won't be risked leading into the bye.

Thomas is in a bit of strife. Depends on MRP findings but you'd think he will either get 1 week or reprimand. His 5 year good record will ensure it won't be more than 1 week.

So there are a few outs where Melbourne can potentially feel confident about their chances on Monday.
