My team with Darling and Wellingham being touch and go is:

Hurn Emac Wellingham
Shep Mcgovern Schofield
Gaff Redden (Tagging job on Boak) Masten
Yeo Darling Lecras
Hill JK Cripps

Followers Nic Nat, Shuey and Priddis

Int: Duggan, Hutchings, Butler and Lycett

If we cannot win this week then god help us

My change is basically only Nelson in.
If no injuries, then give McKenzie a rest and play Nelson down back with him providing some rotation through the midfield.
If Darling injured, move McGovern to CHF and play Nelson down back with some rotation through the midfield.
If Wellers injured, bring in Nelson as a direct replacement.

Changes : Injuries or Match-ups
I love the fact our MC and coach back up our players and have the courage to play some back into form.
I'm sure i'm like most and get excited when you see a rookie named. I look forward to seeing the next batch come through with Barrass, Cole and Nelson high on my list to get games this year but only through necessity when injuries or match-ups are needed.
For me Emac, Masten, Cripps, Lecras, Redden and Jetta (those commonly named for the chopping block) are easily best 22 and should be played when available.
Players on the cusp imo Schofield, Hill, Hutchings, Butler are doing more than enough to keep there spots form those pushing hard at EP (the 3 previously mentioned) Ellis, Partington, Lamb, McInnes etc. With Sheed and Brown to come back in a couple of weeks for the first time in a long time we have the luxury of almost a full list to choose from.
Its no coincidence that the forwards had one of there best games for the year with our mids all finding some form and Shep, Wellingham and Emac starting to jell together.
I don't know enough about opposition teams but have felt we are too tall in the backline at times this year but assuming we need 3 tall's again and everyone is fit then i'll agree with most and say NO CHANGE.

No changes if fully fit.

Need to build consistency away, taking an unchanged lineup will help that immensely.

I would hope we play McGovern forward this week anyway, tbh, at least start him there. I'd back in shep hurn & Wellingham to take on mcgoverns intercept.

Carlisle looks like he'll be back this week for them, as will gray. They are big ins for port. And gray loves playing against us.

Nelsons knocking on the door, but no harm in keeping him hungry. And i don't mind seeing Jetta at Ep for another week or two yet. As simmo said yesterday in his presser, it's nice to see him enjoying his footy, building some confidence. I've always thought you don't see a player at their best at a new club for at least 1/2 year, so if he builds that consistency in our system that we need, he will be very useful later in the year.

Selection is a matter of :
1. Replacing those who are injured or who are in the needing a rest
2. Sending a message for those who did not perform well
3. Retaining players who did their job well
4. Rewarding the players not in the side who are pushing hard at training and WAFL
5. Getting the balance right in terms of experience and development

and what most people fail to look at when making a big statement

6. Reviewing the opposition and seeing where their strengths and weaknesses are and understanding the right match ups.

So selections on above criteria
1. Injury worries from what I saw on Sunday are Darling and Wellers. Not sure who else and will find out more mid week.
2. Non performers - no passengers on Sunday but I personally want to see more from McKenzie, Redden and Cripps. Their 2016 has been a bit disappointing. It felt better with Le Cras spending more time in the forward line and hence Cripps is spending more as a midfielder and not setting the world alight but still a pass mark.
3. Most of the team did their job well against St Kilda.
4. Rewarding training and WAFL form - Barrass has been knocking at the door all season, Nelson has responded beautifully in EP and showing he can deliver in the midfield, Jetta did the right thing but it is only 1 game so possibly too early, McGinnity has apparently been really good at training and pretty good at EP and Cole has been great along side Barrass.
5. Love to see Cole given a chance but would probably wait until the following week against the Suns. Lamb is a little inconsistent still.

6. Port. They are missing quality talls in Lobbe, Ryder, Schulz and Carlile. Only other critical person in/out is Robbie Gray and he is a test.
That means we can make changes at the selection table if we want as we have height to our advantage. Playing the same 22 and ignoring who you are up against is insane.
. Their forward line is easily covered and we could decide to move McGovern up forward if Darling is injured. Problem if Wellers is out is who to play on Wingard.
. Their defence is small with only Jonas (188 cm) and (Hombsch (193 cm) needing to cover Kennedy, Lycett and Darling. We would want to continue to expose their lack of height.
. Trengrove in the ruck means we start with a massive advantage and we should dominate the centre bounces assuming NicNat/Lycett play.

Main focus for me will be extracting the ball from winning clearances. Overall a little concerned on our pace and going to tall (especially in defence).

My change is basically only Nelson in.

Quality post.

I am with you on number 6, but it seems to me we rarely make changes based on match ups. Simmo seems to be very much like Woosh in that he'll back the players and the structure to get the job done against anyone. This worries me. It can make the incumbents a bit complacent and it can also be exposed by opposition match ups. This includes during games. I recall the Hawks game where Sicily was tearing us up and we just seemed to stick to Plan A for far too long.

Small forwards have always caused us headaches. I liked what Nelson provided in the early part of the year. Thought he had good games against Puopulo and Ballantyne, kept them under wraps. He is one that I don't mind seeing back in, perhaps at the expense of McKenzie as I think he might be superfluous to our needs and looks the shakiest of our KPDs at the moment. Unlikely to happen though.

Nelson for Schofield. We are to tall and plenty of smalls rotate through Ports forward line. We need a big defensive effort from our forward line this week.

Boaks so out of form at the moment. If simmo won't tag a rampaging mitchell, i doubt he will tag boak. Simmo might play hutch on gray but not a proper tag.

considering schofield has taken the big boys this season and mackenzie not taking on the monsters, schofield will take the dixon match up.

I know it's only Monday, but ****ing bring it on already.

This game is the start of our season proper

ins; Partington for Cripps
Nelson for Wellingham if injured
Barrass for Darling if injured

Nice game to debut Party in as Cripps needs a shake up call, 7 disposals is very poor game
We don't debut players in 'premiership seasons'

No changes unless they are forced. Think people are being a bit harsh on Redden. He had 9 tackles today (equal most with Priddis, and didn't even start out of the middle) and pressured well. He is playing a role at the moment. Not all our mids can get 25 possessions plus... there are only so many to go around! A good tackle is just as valuable as a good possession to the team.

Btw, any relation to Big Tones aka Hutch? ;)

If the sore players pull up well than no need for changes as much as I'd like to see Xavier Ellis return.

Presuming we miss Wellingham and Darling I'll say Nelson/ Ellis and Lamb replace them, McInnes maybe but we need to reward Lamb also

With Jetta I know it sounds cliche and coach talk but I want to see a body of work from him at WAFL level before he returns, can't return on the back of a 29 touch game against the bottom of the ladder side. If it was quality opposition I'd maybe think differently but to bring him back would be silly and we'd gain nothing from that.

As for Port if Robbie Gray is fit he will return and we need to assign a shut down player to him, no if's but's or maybe's about it. He is there most damaging player, and if we can negate his influence or force him into hand balling more than kicking than that's a massive win for us.

My thoughts on how Port (if fit) will turn out

IN: R. Gray ~ Carlile
OUT: Ah Chee ~ Jonas/ Stewart

FB: Impey ~ Carlile ~ O'Shea/ Jonas
HB: Broadbent ~ Hombsch ~ Pittard

W: Byrne Jones ~ Polec
C: Wines
FOLL: Trengove ~ Ebert ~ Boak

HF: R. Gray ~ Dixon ~ Young
FF: Neade ~ Westhoff ~ Wingard

INT: Hartlett ~ Amon ~ Krakouer ~ Jonas/ Stewart

I expect no changes. Good to see some of the younger guys at WAFL level pushing up and putting pressure on.

Nelson, Barrass and Jetta bashing hard on the door this week.

If JK does have to miss with Missus (see what I did there), McInness will get the call up, not Lamb.

Port have some serious players in their side still. Grossly underperforming still

Actually if JK doesnt get up i would go with a smaller backline and put Gov forward. Emac and Schoey should be fine with their forwards. We also have Lycett/ Nic Nat who can spend more time up front if needed.

If JK does not get up:

Out: JK (Inj)
In: Ellis

I would bring in Ellis to let Nelson continue his work as a mid in the WAFL for a few more games.

+1

I'd be happy with Ellis or Nelson.

Port aren't that tall at all up front.

At some stage injuries will occur, any team needs to blood players throughout the season so when it does happen the transition is seamless.
