Didn't like reading this from Shuey regarding Shep's smother late in the Saints game:
"He’s an idiot if you ask me,” Shuey joked. “I wouldn’t have done it, but that’s just Shep. He’s really competitive."

I think a few more players need to show the commitment Sheppard does on a weekly basis. We look far too soft around the ball at times. It could have been taken out of context as I haven't actually watched the interview.

We have to win this one if we are to challenge for the top 4. It's awfully crowded at the top of the ladder this year!

Mark LeCras also had a day out against the Saints, kicking six majors in what was his biggest haul of the year.

For the first seven rounds of season 2016 West Coast staff has encouraged LeCras to push up the ground to impact the midfield contest, but on Sunday it gave him a licence to score and stay put in the attacking 50m.

Given the results, Simpson said he might have to reconsider LeCras' role in rounds to come.

“I learnt a little about Lecca myself,” Simpson said.

“He played predominantly as a forward since (before) I’ve been at the club and I haven’t actually let him stay as a permanent forward for a long time. I think he had 13-14 possessions, they were all in the forward half and six of them were goals. He also set up a couple as well. It’s something I’ll definitely have to go to at some stage.”

we wanted it and now we got it. simmo finally realises that lecca is better as a deep forward than a forward that pushes into the midfield. I dont mind lecca pushing into the middle time to time but this is where lecca can dominate.

I am pretty sure it was tongue in cheek

Yeah, I'm sure it was. And in fairness, Shuey has probably been one of the hardest at the ball of our midfielders this year. Still, I hope the rest of the team looks to match the commitment Shep brings every week.

Really? I certainly hope he wasn't being tongue in cheek!

We all know when we are on top we can really grind our opposition to dust. We need to see that kind of desperation when we are getting smashed. Not saying Shep hasn't played well but we needed that desperation get against hawthorn at the G.

Last thing we need are injuries going too hard when we are up by 100

Yep thought the same, Although i think he knew he shouldn't of said it, and would of been tongue in cheek. Not what supporters wanted to hear though

Keep the errors to a minimum and apply strong pressure and we'll be fine. I am scared what another away loss will do to our mentality though. Hard to ignore the media pressure as a player. Last year's win against port at AO set us up as contendors. Even though port didn't end up having the year they were expecting, the feeling at the time is that we had just beaten a contender that their home ground and we could beat anyone as a result.
Sometimes you can try too hard and go in too fired up, meaning you have used up too much nervous energy before the first bounce. Just a thought as find it hard to fathom how their form and energy levels are so contrast from one week to the next?

Yeah I felt uneasy hearing him say that and even if it was tongue-in-cheek, there may be a small nugget of honesty in there - it was late in the game after all and while you don't wanna shirk contests or stop competing, you don't wanna get injured either.

Having said that, I reckon Shep and Gov are fearless down back and the team is better for it. Don't you just love how every time McGovern makes a mistake, he busts his arse to rectify it immediately? Did it in the final quarter against the Saints - kicked a grubber towards Membrey who ended up taking a shot on goal and Gov smothered it. Such a competitor.

Govs game against Port last year was massive too. Pretty sure he made a big smother in that game coincidentally.

Yeah it was the "Mitts!" game - after taking a great mark in the back pocket over Schulz, he kicked a shocker which missed Shep and ended up in the hands of a Port player who ran towards goal. Gov then bowled him over and took out Gray as well, with the ball spilling over for a behind.

Changes - only injuries

In - Nelson, Barass. (if players injured)

I still would like a smaller defensive line up. Gives us much more run, but coaches seem set on having Gov, scho and Ezy back there

Are smothers registered on the stat sheets? I've never seen them on there. Still underrated, would be interesting to see who's up there a lot of good smothers on the weekend I noticed in lots of games. Let's not forget some of Beaus and Chicks beauties!
