Douglas won a best and fairest, and came second last year. They're not at all comparable. The suggestion was not to look at his form 10 years ago exclusively, it was to look over the entirety of a 10 year period. There's a substantial difference.

Your argument is that we should ignore all evidence, including the most recent, in favour of a small favourable sample size. When viewed as such does this argument really seem like a good one?

I don't mind Reilly's inclusion so much. Had an excellent 2012, a shaky start to 2013 before injury, and has put in a strong SANFL performance. He deserves a crack at it.

I'm more concerned about the players we chose to retain from last week.

Sharky start largely due to him being to heavy

Hopefully now that he has dropped a few kilos he can cover the ground much better

Our conditioning team needs to take some responsibility for 2013 and setting our players up to fail

My point is that ten years of history doesn't mean that much. Yes, it has some meaning. But it's not that meaningful compared to his last two years which have been, on the whole, well above standard.

I'm certainly not saying we should ignore all the evidence. I'm saying that, considering all of the evidence with the appropriate weighting (which means that less emphasis is placed on what Reilly did in 2006 than what he did in 2012, for example), I think he's a worthwhile addition.

I blame Sando for the criticism of Thommo (I'm still a believer). If players are not fit DON'T PLAY THEM. I can't recll that you were supporting myself and other posters who were calling for Thommo to be rested last season. You can't support the decision to run him into the ground last year and then criticise posters who were disappointed with his output in 2013.

Sando admitted that he shouldn't have played Truck last week and deciding to play Brad Crouch for 2 and a half quarters was plain dumb. Not as dumb as playing a one armed Petrenko in a prelim final but not worth the risk against Geelong (unless we were convinced that we couldn't win the game).

Port keeps Carlisle in the twos and plays Impey. We play Porps instead of Lyons or Matty Crouch and bring back an underdone Reilly. If we are over run in the last quarter, don't worry folks, we are even fitter than last year.

Reilly looked pretty damn fit in the reserves.

Porps gets this week, he doesn't have a gold pass as some people whining here believe. He spent the second half oxf last year in the magoos. He fails again and its tike to see Crouch.

He played 16 games. Apart from a quarter against the Kangaroos he gave pretty much nothing.

He has a rolled gold pass

Not going to argue that Porps was shit last year but he did have a 4 game patch where he was very good, he averaged 18.5 disposals, 5.25 marks, 3.25 tackles, 2 goals a game.

The way some talk on here is that he hasn't played a good game since 2009 which isn't the case. The issue is that when he doesn't have a strong game it's often a very poor game.

Round 18 was the last time he played last season so it's enough to suggest he lost this 'gold pass' everyone is talking about.

He was fantastic in the pre season and it warranted his spot in the side come round 1. He obviously wasn't able to translate that pre season form into the real thing, but give him a few games, if he still hasn't by then, drop him and allow someone else to try and claim that position.

So Porps played 11 games for the Bloods last year? I must have missed that.

Regarding Reilly's "injury", he is coming back from a shoulder operation. He has played bruise free football in 2 SANFL trial matches. This is not his fault but has he tackled a 90kg midfielder in full flight? Has he stood under a high ball as a Jono Brown charges in?

Since he is hardly one of our "elites", I would like to at least see him in a genuine SANFL match.

No one's saying he's done nothing since 09. He had an excellent 2012, highlighted by his 2 finals games v Freo and Hawks.

Dangerfield needs to play on half back flank and move Sloane to half forward flank if we are to have any chance.
Uh what?
Dangerfield should be in the middle...and just needs some protection from the other mids this week. I want to see whoever is tagging him smashed into oblivion.

Gee its almost like we've never tackled anyone at training.
Its almost like they have zero match simulation drills...
wow your ignorance is glaring.

Hallelujah brother, send this to Sando!!

What's Wayne Wiedermann doing these days? We could just send him out there for a few cheapshots.

Real question is if you could have one late withdrawal from the port team who would it be?

For me its Boak.

We really need wider wings on Adelaide oval.

Truck, Jaensch and Reilly in our back six means lots of getting 'turned around' by the small forwards. We'll need to take out the first few rows just to fit in their turning circles.

.... but wait.... we still have Otten to come into the team!

No chance of Boak pulling out, anyway I want to beat them with there stars in.

I've been quite happy of our low key approach this week as opposed to the street people. Media, radio and TV, have been Port centic all week. The tone of all this is that they only have to show up to win.

Hope to god Sando has the team fired up because of the Powders chest beating and we smash them!

the amount of Port fans I know that are just waiting for the celebration is amazing.

I don't think I remember a game with a team such overwhelming favorites.

Golly, come on southerntakeover.

A sample size of a few years is a decent sample size, and relevant, unlike his form in the 2003 elimination final. If any player's sample size is dubious, it is Lyon's. Because it barely registers as one. Reilly has a stretch of football to look back on, as well as a mature body and dramatically improved fitness base this year - which they've watched unfold, and you haven't. What you're asking is precisely what you've bizarrely claimed cmndstab to be arguing in the inverse - that the club ignore all evidence, including the most recent, and just make a judgment call on Lyons ahead of Reilly. That judgment call of yours could well be wrong too.

And best and fairest awards are crude measures. Like the brownlow, they don't necessarily go to the best player, though that's not to say they never do. Didn't you say Thompson was robbed in 2010?

cmndstab's argument is whatever his argument is. Not the argument you made up and deep throated him with. Come on mate.

Right on Cap.

I feel this is a real plus for us. We have been really quiet, flying under the radar.

Sure they have improved but they beat Carlton who, lets face it, aren't travelling very well. I'm quietly confident that the Powder are in for a surprise tomorrow.

Someone tell me what Lyons has done to earn a spot?

I don't think that is the correct question. What did he do to hold his spot may be more apt. He out performed Porplyzia in the last game significantly in my opinion and the opinion of others. I think the ins are good, just perhaps one of the outs was not.

On centrebet:-

Port $1.72 crows $2.12

Not really overwhelming.
