Friday night was a massive ask for our makeshift backline. With biggs, zaine, williams, young, suckers and either hunter or dale, our average games were 54 or 44 each. This was massively skewed by sucklings 139 games. Put simply our current backline is young and developing.

Friday nights game showed how much experience we are missing. And against the giants we should have been overmatched and were. Plus run off half back was non existent. Suckers tried and botched it every time.

The expectations on young are mindblowing. Even by the MC. He should be the third tall.

I agree with some of the coments on here, unless he needs a break, keep young in, but bring in an experienced defender (fletch) to shield him. Let young do woods job and use his athleticism to get to contests and go third man up. He will make mistakes, but let him battle through them. Even after his mistakes he was still trying for the agressive option in the corridor - which is consistent with our style. Kid had a poor game but had the guts to stick to the plan. Better than some of his mates.

As for other changes, wallis has been down for a few weeks. I think that he has hit the wall and needs a break.

As for cloke v Redpath, my view is that it is actually stringer v redpath. Cloke actually halves the aerial contests and brings it to ground (cant seem to take a grab atm, but neither could toyd). Both red and stringer too often fail to impact contests and let the ball get marked and swept away on their watch. If it comes to stringer v redpath, i go stringer, for now.

Finally libba. No repeat efforts. Gives once twice then cooked.that is either lack of fitness or desire or both. Either one unacceptable. On that basis, and it kills me to say this but, id prefer honey, or moyd. In a windy game, which is expected, it will be about territory, and honey or moyd should be suited to this. If moyd plays, suckers get pushed up to the wing.

Bob will finish shortly, so unless injured, he plays every game. I also dont see morris being ready. One knock or fall and hes gone for the season.

So my changes:

Out: red, wallis, libba
In: fletch, jj, honey or moyd

Team:
Fb:Young fletch williams
Hb:Biggs zaine suckers
C: Hunter McLean Macrae
Hf: jj cloke picken
Ff: dickson stringer dale
R: rough dahl bont
I: dunkley daniel honey/moyd bob

- need to find the correct defensive structure. Need 3 talls and 4 smalls IMO. Talls are Cordy, Young and Roberts. Smalls are Biggs, Williams, Suckling and Murphy. Ideally we have Wood, Morris and Adams.
- need to find the right ruck/forward combination. Both need to play in the ruck so I think Cloke gets the nod over Redpath. Roughead and Cloke will do. Ideally we have Tom Boyd.
- need the correct balance of our midfield/forward lines. All need to be able to get the ball and be dangerous around goal. Need 13 players. Picken, Dahlaus, Bontempelli, Wallis, Macrae, Dale, McLean, Hunter, Dickson, Stringer, Webb, Daniel and Johannisen. Ideally we have Libba in form, as well as Crameri in good nick.

So that leaves us with:
IN: Webb, Roberts, Johannisen
OUT: Redpath, Liberatore, Dunkley.

The best feature of your team selection is the movement of McLean to the centre. This is the position that he deserves based on his recent form. Against the Toby Greene Maulers his stints in the forward line were far too long.

For anyone coming to Ballarat for the game, try and actually go into the town centre. There's some good cafes and spots to see.

For some reason they council decided to renovate the oval that's in the middle of the industrial estate. Imo there was atleast two grounds in the town that should have been brought up to afl standard before north city's, but that's a story for another day.

If you wanna go get lunch/breaky/coffee I'd go to either Café Choux Choux, Campana's stockade cellars or Webster st cafe. Dinner at Meigas, Holy Smokes, Griffin Burger or Eureka pizza and pasta.

Probably won't be as good as some of the Melb food but it's not bad, it's all about 15 minutes from the ground (and on the way back to Melb) and I much better than the concrete and 4x4 wood I can imagine they'd be serving near the ground.

Suckling was fine and to be honest he's fine in a lot of games. He's just become a bit of a whipping boy.
Agreed, his defensive efforts have improved over the past 4 weeks which was my concern with him. It strange I think Suckling and Cloke were in our better players but some still want them dropped. I think Smith and Dunkley should not get a game until they learn to kick as their turnovers outdo their good work. In saying that Dunkley adds more than Smith at present. I cannot fathom how AFL footballers cannot kick wit all the training and investment that goes into them.

Can't drop Cloke, Wallis, Dale, Young or Suckers.

Cloke covers a lot of ground and acts as a link between mid and forward. If one of the big forwards need to go it needs to be Red.
Wallis had a bad one but he should not be expected to be our small forward. He is a clearance player , and as such should play on ball not 75% forward. I'd drop Libber before Wally.
Dale. Was very good first half. Sure,he dropped off but ummm, about 18 others did too. I think he has the arms and judgement to be that 3rd tall forward.
Young was thrown to the wolves. An 18 yo expected to win 1on 1 against a mountain of a bloke. They saw the mismatch, lobbed it up high, kid was crucified. I never pretend to know more than the coach, but in this instance I think he got sucker punched. Simpson was always going to be a late in, they were always going with 2 big forwards to stretch our skinny tall defenders. Why Roberts was not selected I'll never know, hell, I'd have been tempted to play Collins as Pattons match up. If you are going to put a kid on a beast you may as well put a big strong kid against him. Young could have played the 3rd tall role, probably suits him much better
Finally Suckers. Not his greatest fan, but I'll give him credit. He actually competed in a physical sense which I don't normally see with him. If he hasn't been dropped for some stinkers, he won't be dropped for one of his better ones.

So I see Libber, Red, Williams as being in the gun, and of course the mandatory surprise injury. JJ the obvious in, but with no VFL, I think we are limited to Roberts, Honey and Webb as options. I want Lippy to burn up the VFL and be our finals surprise packet.

Yes, I said finals. 2 from 2 will do it. Have faith.

I accept people have different views on whether it should be Redpath or Cloke, or Redpath and Cloke, Suckling good or bad, even if Lin Jong is best 22. But it is "beanie" not "beany", never has been "beany", never will be "beany" and forever will be "beanie". My grandfathers fought in wars to protect the australian way which includes the spelling of "beanie". And if you think it is appropriate to spell it "beany" well - that is a subject that I really want a plebiscite about.

PS Optimistic Dogs appalling mis-spelling of the word aside, bring a beanie, Ballarat is freezing.

The season rests on JJ, when he plays well like the Bont it changes the dynamic of the team. Without JJ playing well the side becomes very one paced.

I don't think Wallis and Libba can be played together at the moment, Libby's just about the best kick at the club but can't get a kick and Wallis only plays well as an inside mid.

Do we think Wallis is carrying an injury of some sort or just being played completely out of position? With Bont spending large amounts forward, I don't understand why Wallis isn't played in the guts and right in the middle of the packs using his elite in and under ability to shovel it out to guys like McLean and Macrae.

Wallis is a good inside mid but struggles elsewhere, much like Libba. It's seems the coaches don't want them both in there together as the midfield becomes too slow.

What the hell is wrong with Wallis and Liber?
They appear to be playing under some kind work to rule order - under protest. Same with Picken.
It's all spits and bursts.

It is a joke of a season. The lack of consistent application from our side beggars belief.

That we have remained in finals contention for so long tell s me this is going to be one of the cheapest premierships in memory.

The only team in the 8 capable of sustaining consistent finals pressure is Sydney. If they didn't have such a shocking season start they would romp this in. The toll of so many must wins is the only thing in their way.

it is so annoying. We have had a better team this year available - a young premiership team a year older - we should be better.

A waste

I feel frustrated and I'm sure Bev must be too.

I might have to speak to my gypsy sister and see if she can perform some kind of spell to lift us out of the underworld and back into the light.

This is an opportunity like few others - all the teams above us are vulnerable

There will have to be a zoo of animal sacrifices - but we can't just sit idly by watching this car crash.
