Trying to fit in all the mids in the same team. We've been down this road before... someone needs to be dropped.

People expecting Kelly to bring his Geelong form in his first season as an Eagle. Did you forget it takes at least 1 season to adjust to our game style? Look at all our prior acquisitions. They sucked in their first season for whatever reason.

People are fair to expect more from his output than what he showed in the last two weeks.

His round 1 form was a good start, and he showed some chemistry with players.

He has been well off since then, but he isn't the only one.

I am not denying that. But I think people expect him to do miracles with the few chances he gets.

Darling is also down. He isn’t old. It’s the midfield. They can’t get the ball. All these issues get fixed when they start doing that.
I don't expect him to perform miracles but he's not even competing and he's consistently 2nd to the ball.
Darling is down but he's had opportunities, he's missed plenty of marks he should have taken. Then again 75% of the team seems down.
I agree though, a lot of our problems stem from the midfield. Shit setup and Redden, Sheed and Yeo have been pretty useless.

Ok, I see what you are saying.

I'm not sure that the forward setup you propose actually functions in reality the way you say it will. But maybe for a day game, it might work.

Brander isn't getting dropped after playing his best game.

To be honest my changes are more about getting round pegs back in round holes, even if it isn’t an optimal setup. If we lose with a bunch of fringe mids playing forward and a KPF learning the wing playing wing, it’s harder to stomach. Maybe it won’t function, which is also bad, but it isn’t functioning now either.

I’m just a big believer in the 2018 players in their best roles, not the “best” players in the team approach. It worked then, it got us to turn around some pretty lacklustre 2017 footy very quickly, but now we’ve seemingly ebbed back into “pick the 22 we want and make it work” and the results speak for themselves.

Solves nothing. Anus, just like Redden, has zero versatility. If he's not in the middle, there's no point - just like Redden. Sheed as well, but not to the same degree. The side's balance is horrendous. We'd be better off playing Kelly on a HFF.

This is spot on IMO.

Been thinking about Kelly and geez he's been in the thick of it in these greesy conditions. We are wasting his outside skills as he is at the coal face.

Did anyone else notice the size difference v Lions? Lions have some big bodied young flankers in the Berry's, Starsavich and the beast CEY.

I feel we need to bring in or play our bigger inside mids inside and push Kelly and Shuey to be the first or second clearence option. In other words instead of being rag dolled in the trenches give those two a bit more space to use their pace and skills.

Inside mids Yeo, Redden, Sheed.

Kelly and Shuey rotate off a HFF and rover.

Port are big as well with Wines likely to come back in and will be fired up.

Out: Ryan (inj), Kennedy, Petracelle

In: Williams, Jones, Watson or Ainsworth? Feel we need more size in close in these conditions.

There will be minimal changes as Simpson is in denial. He will drop a fringe player like Jack Petruccelle because that is an easy decision.

From all reports Simpson is more stubborn than Worsfold so there will be no tinkering with game plan or big names dropped.

But if he wanted to make a statement he would drop Kennedy and Redden. That won't happen though.

The benefit of bringing in youth is that they are excited and hungry.

The enthusiasm new players bring in. We know it works.

Just as we know that forwards kick goals as do elite mids.

It's only been 18 months, but 18 months is a long time in football

- Le Cras retired
- Rioli out indefinitely
- Venables out for the season
- JK slowed down considerably
- Opposition have template on how to stop our system

Your selections defy your own logic.

I can't remember having 3 tall forwards + 2 rucks in 2018.

Brander isn't a KPF playing on a wing. He won't be selected in a role inside 50, we have other options for that. He is a wingman now. His selection should be based on his growth and output in the role in which we are asking him to play. Based on last night, and his growth, he rightfully deserves a tick.

You saw last night in the first quarter that Brisbane intentionally kept the ball on the far side while Oscar was in the ruck, keeping Naitanui off the ground. Oscar has been absolutely destroyed the last two weeks.

I've felt the key has been dropping JK, moving Oscar in to his role and bringing in Williams. Oscar will provide us with at least as much as JK has shown, and Bailey is better in the ruck. Having Bailey in the ruck at least provides less uneven output between our first and second rucks, perhaps it gives our mids a better shot at first use. I say that while knowing the match committee are not going to drop Josh Kennedy.

But even with Nic seemingly on fire, the mids couldn't work together to get the ball forward with any kind efficiency.

Sheed should be dropped for any player who is willing to tackle. I'd be happy to give Jones a shot, but that then impacts on our rotations in the mid field, as Jones can rotate through there.

We took 46 marks last night, and our efficiency at completing marks had to be the lowest I have ever seen.

We are not, and have rarely been a contested possession team. We win clearances, kick, clunk marks, goal. If we don't win a clearance, we create a stoppage, and then we go again.

We don't have high number of contested possession players, because it isn't our priority. We get around it by understanding that we will only have a few matches each year where we in a situation where our game style is not rewarded because of the environment we are playing in.

So if you have built your list with a particular style in mind, and have the personnel to implement that style. What do you do when you find yourself in a position where you get no reward for the things you do well because it is difficult to do those things?

You can't just switch in players that thrive in this new environment, because you haven't recruited and developed players with that in mind.

Simpson, the match committee and players really have their hands full trying to work through exactly what this team needs to look like.

The hardest thing about it, is the fact there is no easy solution, otherwise it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Brander is an interesting one for me as to whether we retain him in the side. On the one hand he's been absolutely horrid, but you have to factor in something like 5/6 games he's played it's been in greasy conditions, in a poor performing team, away from home in a belting. That and he's playing in a role he wasn't drafted for and needs time to adjust.

But there's not much denying he's adding very little to a side that is starting to roll downhill. Do we swap him out in the hope someone is able to come in and play the role effectively, or do we persevere with him knowing that this could very easily be a bad year for us and to come out of it without development of young players would be a real shame.

Getting flashbacks of that awful Good Friday 2019 game, what we served up and their plan to completely nullify our defense .. shudder.

In: Heavy day drinking

Out: petch, rotham, redden
In: Cameron, Watson, and someone with pace in midfeld

Ahchee at least shows some pace. Brander improved on last week at least.

We need Hurn.

Our ball movement is horrible at the moment and he needs to find form. He was AA last year so it's not like he suddenly can't football.

Mcgovern will be an in, with a day time game his intercept marking attempts might actually stick for once and he has the capability to open the game up by taking on tough kicks.

Feel bad for whoever goes out for Gov really as I don't think the defence was to blame for that loss.

Happy for Brander to stay in. There's a part of me that likes Ah Chee as well but we are just way too slow at the moment on defence. Teams seem to move the ball through our zone with ease right now.

Because after being trounced by the Suns, everyone expected us to come out breathing fire. And we should have, if we weren’t still old, slow, tired, homesick, un-acclimatised, unfit.

same logic could be applied to Port game next week. We’re A* grade on paper. We need to save face and our season. Maybe we’ll take it out on Port. (But I somehow doubt it).

Tipped us this week and will do the same next week.

Sorry, have you watched the last two games? It's very much like he suddenly can't football.

Port will smash us the way both clubs are playing at the moment... it is really chalk and cheese.

also going by an earlier post here on paper we are starting to look less and less "A" grade... unless "A" is for amateur.

Yup unless there are 22 injuries to Port in the next week...i just cannot see how west coast can win

Reckon we have no chance its going to get worse before it gets better

Getting more of the ball didn't make it a better game, he was terrible. It would have been better if he had less of the ball quite frankly.

If Brander had of hit three more targets with three of his kicks that causing bad turnovers we would be lauding his arrival. Brander had a good but also bad game. If he continues to improve each game he plays he likely stays.

What other options do we have

Redden, Petro, Jetta, Cripps, Ah chee, Waterman or Watson.

I want Watson in if fit and ready.
