List Mgmt. Changes vs Port

69% TOG, 34 hit outs, 5 tackles, 9 clearances and a goal against Brisbane.

Disagree with that easy summary. We are ignoring the fact that unlike other teams like North/Gold Coast, hell even Port who we play this week that we have to carry a extra ruck and sacrifice a spot in our 22 to cover his lack of gametime. We sacrifice so much to get those stats out of him and this year, I dont think its been worth it.

The shortened game time has hurt him, not improved him and its hurt us, not improved us to boot

Really surprised by Oscar Allen, would have thought Bailey Williams in the ruck Oscar Forward and Ahcee out

Not really when you think about it. Williams does not have the physical strength to match Lycett/Dixon

He might not look it but Hickey is top 3 in strength in our team. Guy is physically tough. Reason why as a ruck he gets a fair few clearances too

I don't agree with your point of view.

Oscar backed him up in the ruck, yet only played 45% game time. Backing up Nic was really the only way he got a spot in the team the last two weeks.

If we went with a solo ruck option, who would you have included in the team?

Our ruckman as a group don’t take any marks around the ground, they don’t offer the link up in play the good ruckman do. We have to get JD high up the ground to be a go to player deep out of defence because our rucks don’t take marks.
It’s just the way it is. I Woukd of gone Vardy over Hickey but let’s face it neither can be relied on. Agree that NN should be playing more minutes.

Last week Id have went with Jarmaine Jones already myself. Jack Darling could chop Naitanuio out for 15% of the game and in particular let Naita rest behind the ball in some forward 50 ruck situations to get his TOG to that 85% level

Let's just hope Hickey plays a ball tearer. Not sure he has the temperament to handle Slyce but happy to be proven wrong!

Dixon is a big, strong unit but I think Hickey has him easily covered for ruck class.

I think what Spacey is trying to say, is that Simpson rarely drops core players. Leadership get a free pass ✅

Schofield has been a FRINGE player for the past 5 years. Marsden was as well. I agree they aren't solid examples.

If we play like shit on the weekend again, do you think Hurn, Yeo, McGovern, Naitanui, Cripps, Shuey, Kelly or Kennedy will cop any heat if they play awful?

No, he'll drop Ah Chee again, another fringe player. Redden and Sheed were once in that category, but no longer. Once a player has runs on the board he's safe.

I believe the list of untouchables is fairly long at West Coast, and Simmo would much rather avoid the PR spin if he was ever to drop a club legend like Kennedy, or other "leaders" in the team, despite having just cause with some having a string of poor performances.

It's always been that way. Embley was shocking at times in his final year, yet i can't recall him ever being dropped. Same goes with Cox, Selwood & Priddis.

I'm presuming it's a club thing, rather than an Adam Simpson thing.

I think Duggan being out and missing our finals series last year was the most contentious 'change' he's made to the team for a while. And even that was masked by the fact Duggan went out under an injury, and never came back. There was no glaring OMITTED next to his name. Could be wrong?

In a nutshell, from an external point of view, the accountability for senior, established players, seems a lot less than fringe or younger players.

Fringes and youngsters have to perform like superstars to keep their position in the team, whilst leaders can suck for weeks, and not have to answer for it

Unless you are in tank mode, this is true of every single sporting organisation in the world

You're probably right.

I guess you could compare us to the way Port have dropped Wines, their captain. Melbourne has dropped former captain and club legend Nathan Jones.

We're a much more successful organisation than both of those spud teams so they are hardly something to aspire to.

It would be interesting to hear from Hawthorn supporters to see how they've handled their ageing stars being in and out of the team. If Puopolo, Burgoyne (unlikely), Birchall, Smith, Shiels types have ever straight up been dropped or are they untouchable.

If Kennedy's output vs Port is the usual 5 touches, 1 tackle, 1 mark and 0.5 goals it's been in 2020, you'd have to ask how long WCE is going to allow that.

For what it's worth i actually think we'll beat Port this weekend, and Kennedy will play a much better game, along with many other under performing players.

Roughead would be a good comparison with JK

Say, what? Please tell us more.

Nothing too say. No chance JK retires this season and we would be insane to let him. He earns absolutely **** all and he wants to go on so why toss him away for? He has done way too much for the club to not let him go out on his own terms

I dont want to do what Hawthorn do and toss away club legends like they are garbage so they can give pick up GWS has beens

I’d say there’s a fair chance at seasons end he’ll retire. Mid season perhaps, but he’s looking tired and Father Time waits for no man....especially West Coast players

Important to note also we need to let Oscar Allen develop and grow.

Otherwise he will become the next Joe Daniher who was run into the ground before he filled out and got his strength and conditioning to a proper level. Allen is atleast 12 months away from being ready for FF without us completely wrecking him physically

So can anyone shed any light on why we are still managing Nic so heavily through games? Especially on reduced quarters? He's played f*ck-all footy in 3 years and, after injury, should have been working on the stamina and conditioning. Is he still unable to run out games? Or are we worried about his knees?

Ooh boy it’s fact checking time!

I think what Spacey is trying to say, is that Simpson rarely drops core players. Leadership get a free pass ✅

Vice captain Scott Selwood was dropped during 2015.

It's always been that way. Embley was shocking at times in his final year, yet i can't recall him ever being dropped. Same goes with Cox, Selwood & Priddis.

Embley was dropped twice late in 2013.

Cox was “managed” out twice in 2014 as they basically rotated him, Naitanui and Lycett through the two ruck spots.

Priddis was “managed” twice in 2017.

A.Selwood was dropped in the second half of 2013, brought back for a farewell game in the final round.

You are.

The problem with this whole argument is the definition of “senior players”, “core players”, “leaders” becomes so rubbery that it eventually just becomes the circular “players who haven’t been dropped are players who can’t be dropped”. E.g. Schofield doesn’t count because he’s “fringe”. Ditto Masten.

Simpson won’t drop reigning two-time All Australian Captain Shannon Hurn after two bad games. Shocker. He probably won’t put any heat on Naitanui either if he plays badly this week, given he was one of our best against Brisbane. Put your house on that. Shuey, our new skipper, reigning B&F and probably our best against the Suns? He’s probably safe too.

Can you actually make a case to drop any of the senior/core/leadership/whatever players that are supposedly untouchable apart from Kennedy? I can’t see one.

So this whole argument is “He hasn’t dropped Kennedy, therefore he’s playing favourites and won’t drop senior players”.

(Yes I know Hurn wasn’t actually AA captain either time, but he should have been)
