And if we lose because we underestimated them and their smalls killed us with their run from the backline with our talls unable to impose defensive pressure to lock it in?

If a player is playing injured (eg Masten) then by all means rest them but we have the bye next week and the competition is even. If we start taking the Saints easy we will lose.

If we lose, I will quit bigfooty.

You heard it here first haha ;)

Alternatively we win, but it's much closer than everyone anticipates because all our tall forwards get in each other's way, the Saints smalls are able to easily rebound out of defence and we waste numerous inside 50s. So we get the four points but miss out on a percentage boost that could be extremely valuable in round 23.

But one kid gets to play an AFL game, basically as charity, before inevitably getting dropped the following week. Instead of another kid who's already played two games and would fit into the 22 much better on the day.

On the contrary, you don't really think about things.

St kilda will be missing Jake Carlisle and will be stretched massively due to their lack of tall key defenders. Another tall for us in our forward line this week won't hurt at all

And, this is St kilda we are talking about, a cellar dweller who we will beat in the midfield, and our quick kicking into the forward line will favor our talls. At home. Its not like we are playings the demons at the MCG this week.

And, Brander and Matthew Allen have both been in form and deserve a debut.

I await your counter argument.

Er too many talls risks them getting in each other’s way. What, u want them all to go for contested marks together?

By your argument we should play 6 tall forwards a week plus the ruckmen since many teams cant play that many talls. What happens when ball hits the ground?

To play devils advocate though, is one person going to make THAT much of a difference in terms of a big win?

Let's say we play Petch instead of Brander: is he going to be that vital to our structure that with Petch we win by 80 points and if we play Brander, we scrape home by 15?

Common sense would dictate that even under the most wildly optimistic circumstances, its highly unlikely that swapping a tall junior player for a small, speedy junior player will make that much of a difference.

When we win the midfield battle (and we will) forward supply will be so great the difference would be minimal, if any. Hell, its equally as plausible to consider a super tall forward line with the ball coming in high and fast could even perform better.

We can afford to gift a young tall a game this week.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think playing another tall forward is madness, when we've already probably got one too many and the only reason we're continuing with that structure is that Waterman is making it impossible to drop him. Stuffing around with it further by shoehorning another tall in there, just for the sake of giving him a debut game and thinking the Saints will be an easy kill, is tempting fate.

We chase, tackle and lock it in our forward line, naturally.

Don't think for a moment that just because we go in tall, that we are slow. Our guys in the forward 50 are very mobile and pressure orientated; Darling, waterman, rioli, Cripps especially. Toss in Nat nat resting up forward into the mix as well.

In fact Cripps (I believe), is leading the afl in forward 50 tackles and pressure acts ATM.

Even if we went super tall, the forward line isn't fill with lumbering brutes. Far from in fact, our talls have genuine closing speed.

What do we do when the ball hits the ground in forward line? Brander isn’t going to crumb it and no matter how agile talls are, they aren’t more agile than shorter blokes. Pressure by talls works when opposing player is a tall.

And you are clearly looking at how so many talls will work together. Or you don’t think they do work together.

So. Look, there is clearly no point logically explaining it to you team balance.

We aren’t going in with so many talls. If we do, I’ll eat my hat.

So you are stating that replacing a young tall, with a young speedy small, will make a profound difference to the balance of the side, correct?

If we take a very optimistic point of view and assume Petch is selected and is good for say, 3 goals, even that's still hardly a massive boost for the team in the grand scheme of things.

People (such as yourself) are making out that if we bring in a small for a tall, our structure will be so profoundly different that we win by 100 points playing Petch, and 10 points playing Brander.

There may be a difference, but it will hardly be as significant as some quarters are making out. Equally, its just as plausible a tall forward line stretches the saints to breaking point. Each to their own point of view.

We need to put a team on the field that holds the structures we believe will win us the flag this year.
What is the point of playing an extra tall for the sake of blooding another kid?
You're not even giving MAllen/Brander proper AFL experience. What do I mean by this? Their debut experience in the AFL will be a land of the giants setup and does nothing to give them a feel for how an actual AFL team setup and game play should be.

We won't be messing with the structure just to blood Brander or Matty Allen.

If we blood one it'll be in exchange for an existing KPF and that will only happen if the club believes that either JK, JD or Misty could benefit from having the extra week off.

While there's something to be said for developing flexibility in the gameplan, dramatically altering the forwardline structure is simply ludicrous and underestimates the significance of the small forward role.

This here debate is why we shouldn't have taken two tall forwards with our first two picks in the draft last year when we already had Mallen and Waterman in the wings.

Kennedy won't be around forever and no-one predicted Waterman to tear it up like this.

KPFs take time so I'm pretty sure the player and the club won't mind if Brander and both Allens take a while to debut.

If you want to give brander a game you need to drop a tall. If the bye wasn't the following week could see waterman taking a break, but hard to justify with the bye

If Brander comes in Waterman gets an extended break.

Like for like replacements and maintain our forward mix.

Said earlier I would give Yeo an extended break and bring in Shuey.

Masten out for Petro.

Like for like.

OUT: Trench warfare
IN: Shock and awe

Hopefully we pick up where we left off in the second half against Richmond. That was the best footy I've seen from any team this year and in my opinion no other side will stand up to it if we bring it.

All these people wanking over Melbourne forget who we've beaten with Shuey on the sidelines.

The storm is coming and these pricks are going to be on the wrong end of it.

Not rush to blood brander

Nothing wrong with learning senior footy in the wafl

He needs a couple of summers in the gym anyway

And he’s contracted - so we don’t need to placate someone threatening to go home
