Changes vs St Kilda

Minor points:

1. No one is getting dropped if they just game into the team unless they were truly awful. Knights has said he'll bring young players into the team and give them a run of games, not chop and change.

2. No one who is less than fully fit and conditioned is playing against St. Kilda. They play such a high tempopressure game than anyone unfit will get caught out, and anyone let than ready might get pushed too hard and pick up an injury.

Lucas, Prismall, Hurley and Daniher won't return against the Saints. Nor will Skipworth, I expect.

Lucas needs at least one more week at VFL level.

Neagle did almost all we could ask of him on the night (other than that bad shot on goal). It would be unfair to drop him.

From AFL.com.au:
"SCOTT LUCAS is unlikely to return to the Essendon team for Sunday's clash with St Kilda, according to coach Matthew Knights.

Lucas was dropped for round seven after an inglorious start to the season following a limited pre-season.

He kicked four goals in an encouraging display for the Bendigo Bombers at VFL level last week, but Knights is hesitant to re-introduce the two-time best and fairest winner into a winning line-up.

"He went back and he did himself proud; he kicked four goals but more importantly his effort and his movement were a lot better, which is what we were looking for," the coach said at Windy Hill on Tuesday.

"Brent Prismall and Michael Hurley also played and got 60 and 70 minutes game time respectively. Having a good win last week I wouldn't have thought there would be too many changes to our line-up."

Knights reported that onballer Mark McVeigh was making significant steps in his recovery from an ankle injury but would not be considered this weekend.

However, Knights did not rule out a VFL return for McVeigh who has played just one game this season.

Fellow injured Bomber Kyle Reimers is on a two-week program and on track to play for Bendigo the weekend after next, while Andrew Welsh is making "good progress" according to his coach."

Yeah, my prediction is almost blown out of the water. I would prefer to watch Neagle though, so I'm more than happy to be wrong.

I'd hate to be the one to have to tell Lucas he's playing for Bendigo again. But he's a big boy, I s'pose.

Just on the Neagle v Lucas selection.
Watch a game with lucas and Lloyd in it then watch fridays game.
You will find that with Neagle there was more space created and our two forwards where not continually leading to the same spot.
The forward line was functional for a change ;)

Definately agree with you here Ant. What do you think of Skippy to come in? Mature body?

Not straight off a 4 week hammy.
Soft tissue injuries = time with Bendigo for match conditioning.

watched a fair bit of Neagle Friday night, and Ant is exaclty right, he seems a very smart foward and I would say was a major reason why the forwardline seemed to work better.

I noticed he not only knew when to lead, but often used the "fat" side to take a defender, if not 2 with him. But unlike Scotty, he would double back into the hole left, or stop and shake his head etc, Neagle kept leading, until he was outside 50 and nowhere in the play, but on at least 2 occasions took 2 defenders with him. All of a sudden space is opened up. It's basic stuff, but when you are a "star" out of form, you do get selfish as Lucas needs to find more of the pill himself inside 50.

The key moment for me was the Lonergan goal - Neagle presented and Brown got the spoil, but in a classic case where the 09 Lucas would have lost his feet, and subseqently the defenders clear, Neagle put in the 2nd effort, snapped from the boundary to Lloyd, hands to sammy goal.

He may have only had 8 touches, but he did a lot more that the stats show. He kicked 2, directly assisted 2, was the catalysit for the goal I just mentioned, and should have had 3 when he was by himself in the square but Lloyd fumbled when he could have gone over the top.

Definitely a good base to go from for Jay.

Ant you would have to be poster of the year so far. Rarely do I disagree with what you say. :thumbsu:

Exactly. He played a disciplined team game.

he sure did. That centering kick to Lloyd from the boundary line was pure, disciplined gold.

Not only that, but **** he creates a presence. In five years time there might be defenders needing the brown undies if they're floating into his space, a la Lockett

Having put some considerable thought into match ups and how I think we need to beat St.Kilda I think there are a few options at selection this week.

Option 1

Completely unchanged. I feel we have the balance spot on and our match ups actually work out really well (check the How to beat St.Kilda thread). This would be my ideal option.

Option 2 (possible changes)

Outs: Myers
Ins: Daniher

My rationale behind this is that Daniher has the speed to play on Schneider in addition to the rebounding ability. He is a straight swap for Myers. But I don't know if Darcy is fit enough to be considered and I'd be keen to throw Myers the challenge this week. He looked 25% better last week I thought.

Out: Houli
In: Jetta

We may also want to improve our 'frontal' pressure by playing Leroy up front as a dangerous forward. For this to happen I feel that Bachar would be the next in line to go as we would replace an attacking defender with an attacking forward. All other guys e.g. Myers, Lovett-Murray, Lonergan have more important roles to play than Bachar IMHO. However I really can't see Leroy getting a game this week TBH and I would like to see Bachar keep his spot.

I would like to see Darcy in the side but as you say maybe needs 1 more week in vfl. Theres no way Jetta can come in he just completely lacks endevour infact I think hes gonaa struggle to play for a while to come IMO anyway

It's important to note that Leroy missed with injury last wee; he was not omitted. He adds something to our forward line and I would prefer him in the side.

In the coming weeks I see the following staggard changes:

Lucas > Lovett Murray
Daniher/Hurley > Myers/Houli (depending on match ups)
Prismall > Dyson
McVeigh > Lonergan
Reimers > Zaharakis

Skipworth, Jetta pushing for selection

We are a better side without Jetta's lack luster efforts if he wasnt dropped he should of been.

The only bloke who will get dropped for lucas is Neagle IMO.
Reimers is out for atleast the next month
So you are telling me you would have Jetta in the side before Lovett Muarry, Myers, Houli, Lonegran, Dyson and Zaharakis

Go back and watch the last five minutes of Anzac Day.

Take away the fumble of a wet ball and really have a look at what Jetta's lack luster efforts did for us.

Actually, go back further than that to the goal that led us to hitting the front in the last quarter.

Jetta's finding touch. His delivery for Lloyd's 300th was sweet and to advantage. He's due for a breakout game.

I reckon we'll need his and Davey's speed to put tackling pressure on the St Kilda ball runners.

Regarding the last 2 posts- You want me to take away that fumble that nearly cost us the game?
Oh hes due a breakout game we better have him in our best 22 then, I'm due to win tattslotto aswell. hahahaha Leeroy maybe on fringe at the moment, but miles off our BEST side!!!!
Zaharakis>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>leeroy!

Well the fumble only nearly cost us the game because Jetta got us there in the first place.

Thats like what Fevola did.
Kicked 8 goals, missed the 9th. lost the game.

You cant base your opinion of him because he almost cost us the game, because the game seemed lost to start with.

Don't take it away, as long as you judge all players that fumbled during the game in the same manner. Lloyd, Myers, Davey...

Jetta gave the ball to Ryder, Jetta tackled twice in the lead up to the Dyson goal. He created the turnover. He also kicked on himself.

He missed one opportunity but created three others and we won the game. He did a lot more good than bad.
