In my view, I always prefer it to be a small, preferably with pace as I feel they make the most impact coming in late so I'd say Bramble or VDM

It's easy to move magnets. As you say, if Treloar is sliding into Sander's role, then slide him into VDMs.

I thought we were past this idea where we would just chuck better players into positions purely because they are better raw footballers.

The match committee clearly values the role that Vandermeer plays in the forward line.

He has not started as the sub in a single game in the previous 5 years. There is not one thing to suggest it’s going to start now.

VDM laid down the second highest amount of sprints and second highest amount of repeat sprints on the weekend. Also has the second highest number of repeat sprints in a game this year. Clearly that's what he is in the team for.

Treloar and Sanders aren't in the team for that. I wouldn't want to try putting Treloar in a role like that given his soft tissue record.

But your original point was that Treloar had been chucked into Sanders role as he's a better player. If this is right, then this has happened because Treloar has been moved out of his usual midfield role by a better player (whoever that may be, Richards, Freijah, Kennedy..)

So clearly, in general, we're not past the idea of moving players around to accommodate better players at all.

I also don't think Bevo is the type to pigeon hole players into specific roles.

In the last 5 years we didn't have the depth behind VDM to push him out. Now we do.
I'm sure the match committee like VDM, I just disagree it makes sense to move off Sanders to accommodate him. Sanders' pressure numbers stack up pretty well, even if he can't sprint as fast as VDM. But, doesn't have any of the downsides of VDM.... breaking down possession chains with fumbles/dropped marks and poor finishing around goals.

A lot may depend on what we do with Williams. I've really liked him down back, provides good stability back there. May mean one of Cleary or Bramble starts as sub.

It could well be that the Sub decision this week is more about player management than it is about form or team balance.

We've got a number of players in hard running roles who have played every game this year.

Given we're well travelled and played a number of games in hot conditions, no doubt a few are feeling the pinch.

With the bye a few weeks away, giving a sub role in the tough conditions here might be the best way of getting a Libba, Kennedy, Davidson, Williams, Dale, Sanders, Ed etc to the bye without needing a week off.

The conditioning, high performance staff might have as big a say as anyone.

I think what frustrates us all is that he fumbles or drops a mark on occasion that directly results in a TO goal. I can recall 3-4 times this year (including on Saturday) where this happened. His ability to get a yard off his opponent is unquestionable tho.

VDM was in our best 3 players this year before he got injured. He’s come back a little rusty but that red hot form against Pies/North/Carlton will go a long way in winning a flag once he gets back into the swing of things.
