Preview Changes vs Swans

Who was the last left field selection that we made? I remember Hendo from a few seasons ago seemed out of the blue to me...

Where does he play then? he is a liability in defense
I don't think he is that bad in defense and he has improved the defensive side of his game, but we need to try and make sure he's setup as our loose man off half back. I think Laird coming back will help our cause here, as he can match up on someone like Monfries.

OUT: LEWIS JOHNSTONE

how is this not obvious to this board?

The guy is as soft as butter the second the ball hits the ground.

He may cut it at sanfl level but you can't be a player that puts zero contest in once the ball hits the ground at afl level.

Paul Roos tried and FAILED when Johnston was at the Swans, as a last resort he even lambasted publically his lack of work ethic both in preparation/effort at both match day and training scenarios.....if Johnston hasn't got the message by now he's either as dumb as dog shit or he thinks his undoubted talent will keep him on an AFL list...He's wrong!!!!

The similarities between another LJ [Luke Jericho] and Lewis Johnston are startling!!
Both have/had the talent to be very good AFL players but neither seem to have/had the hunger to succeed at AFL level.

Gee, reading the Sydney board is like a clone of here at present! Too slow, experienced players past it, game plan is shit etc etc. Gonna be a very interesting game this week!

Yep he was the same against Geelong as well no fuss neat skills gets the job done.

Pods needs to go before Smack he is giving us nothing. Mckernan was always going to have a bad one at some stage we need to persist he has been good up until this week.

Let's hope Lynch can get up we desperately need him. Otten would be handy also and would be our best tall forward if he was playing!

And smack can give a bit in the ruck as well. I'd rather we had a better option, but his selection over pods is a no brainer. But as tsr said, pods likely has a sando gold pass. Plus it's early and it would be admitting to a mistake. Not that I reckon it was a mistake to get him, just to play him ahead of jj or smack. Maybe the 2nd year was a touch extravagant.

Jaensch played a good game yesterday, and you seem to be the only one that disagrees. I wanted him de-listed last year as well, but anyone who can't see his good form at present has the blinkers on.

The offensive side of his game was good, but I didn't think much of the defensive side of his game. When you're playing as a defender, that isn't exactly ideal. He just doesn't seem to have the mindset of a defender.

Wright played well last week, and then did a fairly decent tagging job on Pittard today. There is no way he should be dropped.
Why the hell would we have tagged pittard?

Both clubs will put up the white flag at 3 qtr time--too stuffed to come out for the last.

He's dropping easy marks. But I think that has a lot to do with the role he's playing. He's out of his depth. That can have all sorts of deleterious effects on the rest of your game.

You don't just start dropping easy marks, especially when that's your strength.

As you get older, especially at the highest level of your chosen sport, what was once easy can suddenly become a lot harder. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that perhaps Geelong may have noticed some signs of decline. Right now he's not afl standard and should not be selected. We'd be better off parking osborne in the fwd 30 and see how he goes.

Plenty of players have played good footy at 32. There's one at Essendon doing it right now.....

Chapman was an elite player throughout a fair chunk of his career. He has been picked up by a club who despite a lot of mental pressure would have played finals in 2013. A club who wouldn't surprise if they finished top 4. Then there's the adelaide and pods scenario which has eff all to do with chappy.

And do you really reckon that if chappy was playing shit footy, they'd persist with him just because he's on their list.

Why?

He is just average. 107 games - zero brownlow votes. Has gotten the pill over 25 times in the last 4 seasons.

I would all be for keeping him in if we were winning. The fact is we are a shit football side ride now and his 16-18 vanilla disposals are doing nothing. We know what his ceiling is.

It is increasingly more obvious that this season needs to be about what genuine young talent we can unearth.

We need to keep playing McKernan, Johnston, Kerridge, Grigg week in week out. They will have some shockers and some good games, but we need to persist.

Ask yourself honestly if we replaced Mackay with M Crouch for today - what would have happened? We would have lost by 75 instead of 60?

Fact is any side is shit when they're losing ......we win next week by 50 points and the last two weeks are forgotten and rationalised away

You have to look at roles of players in the structure ....a big thing on this board last year but conveniently forgotten when it doesn't suit the argument.
Crouch for Mackay is like replacing an orange with an apple ........when did Crouch start becoming an outside midfielder???

Look we always want to try the new player in the hope we turn over a beauty ....understand that mentality, but seriously you need to watch Mackays game much closer to see what he does ....he's a 100mtr player and we have NO OTHERS in the list AP, except Cameron who's not ready

Grigg so far this season has been a big disappointment but no-one mentions that .......he has lost his sidestep and ability to buy himself space & time. ATM he's a slow midfielder not offering the tricks he did lasy year except the elite kick which so far has been too often undr pressure

How about we discuss this instead

My issue with your thoughts here is that dropping a tall for a small is only window dressing, a bandaid move which fails to address the fundamental issue. We've been dropping that 3rd tall for years in favour of this apparent "benefit" gained in having an extra small who can provide extra tackling pressure and yet the ball is still brought out of our forward line at a rate of knots.

We need to address the crux of the problem which is:
A: Delivery into the forward line
B: Forwards who actually present and take a grab/bring the ball to ground
C: Crumbers to swoop on the ball when it hits the ground

I think we almost could bring young Charlie Cameron in for a run, with the view to giving him a rest once Walker/Lynch/Otten start coming back into the side.

If Hartigan were available though, I'd almost bring him and Jenkins in, throw Rutten forward and drop both Podsiadly and McKernan such was the pitifulness of their display yesterday. I know Rutten doesn't offer a heap going the other way, but hell I think he'd still be an improvement...
My understanding is Hartigan misses an AFL game & a SANFL game (1st round) ....therefore he's available for the Sydney game

I hope we don't introduce Charlie yet .....as you know as president of his fan club i should be pushing ..but it's just premature

I know people will hate this but IMO Petrenko has to come in ......for all the good Betts has been offensively i haven't seen evidence too much of the defensive side of his game other than hunting the ball

I think Betts and Petrenko will make a great forward line duo ......unfortunately Petrenko in for Porps

Laird is a monty to come in ....we need more run in the side

Rutten looks decidedly slow and Port played thru Ruttens opponent most of the night

I heard that Tex was given the medical clearance 2-3 weeks ago to play and the club was very much hoping that Tex would have started playing in the sanfl side by now however Tex is committed to giving it a full 12 months before playing

It seems giving it a full 12 months is a important mental milestone for Tex
:thumbsu: wholeheartedly agree

3 SANFL games to get confidence and a feel of the game (akin to 3 trial games) ......and he'll be back around round 9

Yep let's turn the heat on a guy who has played most probably 5 full games of footy. He was ok last week and was down yesterday but still kicked 2 goals as a mid.

You've got a warped view on things. Perhaps change your name to Warped World.

Griggs no dmac

Carlton did last week too I'm sure..
Port try to use him to set up play..
Hmm, from what I've seen of him he's average at best, gets caught with the ball often. Maybe we should have let them go through him.

Spot on. He'd be the only ever 10 game key forward to not have perfectly rounded out his game. He's had enough chances.

Yeah I'm not understanding why the bother to stop him being used to set up from defence..
If I recall correctly he had a good pre-season in that way? and maybe some have reacted quickly to forward tag him..
