Preview Changes vs Swans

He's one of our most experienced players and he has no composure at all. He's just the kind of player we should be weeding out. We have way too many players on our list who shit their pants when the heat is on.

Couldn't agree more. Little patience should be provided to mature and experienced mid-range players. I'm no Reilly fan, but given the amount of time he was out, I won't be concerned if he gets another go next week. But that would be the full extent of my patience. I'd then give cey the rest of the year.

For those who've watched the reserves run around, what's jack Osborn's pace and fitness like? I know he's got a good leap on him but is he able to apply any forward line pressure?

With our current talls getting nowhere near it, would it be it worth parking him in our forward 30? At 205cm and 107kg he isn't going to get out marked that often and provides a contest for betts to crumb
Pace and agility is fine, would provide a strong contest. He does have the tools but we just arent gonna pick him, its not what we do. Taking chances means you might lose.......

My hubby's thoughts for next week.

Vs Sydney: 1st: Jacobs, Thompson, Douglas
Kerridge Dangerfield Lyons
Betts Jenkins Grigg
Smith Sloane Jaensch
McKay Talia Reilly
Laird Rutten Shaw(LThompson)
Int: M. Crouch, Wright, Ellis-Yolmen, Petrenko (Sub)
Suggested Outs: Crouch(inj), McKernan, Pods, Porps, Johnston, Brown, (Shaw inj?)
Suggested Ins: M.Crouch, Jenkins, Petrenko, Lyons, Ellis-Yolmen, Laird, (RThompson)
Specific Notes:
-Jaensch playing v.well but a liability in defence - is a goal kicker & former HF or could possible play wing:
-Brown not playing well enough - forwards are killing him - needs to be Omitted;
-Defence needs work - hence Laird and McKay insertions + Ellis-Yolmen who could also play H/F;
-Grigg and Smith are penetrating midfielders/defenders but need to be in reach of goals - both too valuable to be in backlines - best as stay at home wings(?) where we are getting thrashed;
-Pods/McKernan just not playing well enough to hold down key positions - Omit;
-Porps (my favourite player) is gone & Johnson too inconsistent - needs to learn consistency - Omit both;
-Danger is in terrible form and one of the worst field kicks in the game over the last 2 seasons - but kicks for goal well, good lead & mark - FF?reserveMid;
-Kerridge and Lyons both goal kickers, can play across H/F where we need more bite in attack and more defensive forward pressure, relief Mids.
-Petrenko's fitness best suited for sub - at least he will tackle when he comes in;
-MCrouch for BCrouch (inj).
General Notes:
-Teach forwards when, how and where to lead - not doing it well;
-Teach mids/backs where to kick; Have all practising their kicking to position.
-Team not physically and mentally strong enough - similar to first half of 2013 when they were overrun in most games. Need greater running effort in each Q and for 4Qs.
-Must learn how to make tackles stick and need second & third efforts from some - get them to watch Sloane & Douglas.

Crouch Out... Lyons In...

as for changes...Porps zero impact as sub needs to be dropped for fairness... Laird in...

M Crouch, CEY, Hartigan, Jenkins...Knocking on the door
with many spots now under the pump... individually, you cant have 3 bad ones in a row and expect to be picked.
Shaw heads that list...

as for the sub... McKernan... perform or it's back to the magoo's
Don't get it drop Shaw who least done something and keep McKernan who is a absolute joke who did nothing but give a stupid free away which regularly does when happens to get near the ball.

Jenny if most of our squad does not know the fundamentals of playing tough accountable AFL footy by now then they will never know, it is either a confusing message that they are receiving or there is an air of just going through the motions.

Agreed Noddy. But there is clearly SOMETHING not clicking.

Sorry, just cannot agree with you on that score!!

Thommo has always had below average disposal which he has more than made up for by getting 40+ touches. He had 2 kicks at half time today which was the least in the entire team, and isn't even being tagged. He has always been a favourite of mine but he was terrible last year and his first 2 games this year have been terrible for an elite mid. Unfortunately think it is time to make the change.

Yesterday when i saw Patrick hesitate time after time on what he should do with the ball even when he had time on his side the guy looked like he was caught in the headlights of a mac truck until he turned it over, i really felt for him as that was definitely not our Patrick's style at all.

Guys on NIRS said they thought he was unwell. Not injured, but not well.

IMO those suggesting that we will make 5 or 6 changes well I ask this question when has Sando ever put the broom through a poor performance.

I think we can best hope for 3-4 changes, with this in mind Laird and M Crouch are a must, Laurd is easily in our best 22 and with 2 sanfl matches under his belt he must come in while Matt Crouch is a contested ball player who just knows how to find the pill and given that we have been smashed in contested ball in my mind he needs to come in.

I do understand that many will have Lyon in front of M Crouch however in my eyes M Crouch is a first round pick who will pull the pants down of many recruiters for letting him slide and we just need to play talent and let it blossom.

Additionally either one of JPod or Smack needs to make way for JJ, I've been critical of JJ's non selection and I feel that it will be Smack that makes way as it will be a like for like change and I have no doubt JPod has a Sando selection gold pass

Our lack of forward pressure was also evident and the 3 talas at this point in time is not working and with this in mind LJ's consistency throughout a game is unreliable, one minute he does something good usually when he is at the end of the chain however many other contests he looks soft, lazy and makes easy errors.

Changes

Out - Crouch inj, LJ, Porpy and Smack
In - Matt Crouch, Laird, JJ and either Charlie or Pets

Sub is a tough gig.

There are half a dozen guys in the gun sights before him:
Pods, Smack, LJ, Jaensch, Shaw, Reilly. Even Danger and Crouch stank more.

How could you say Jaensch is in the gun before Porps. Porps has been terrible while Jaensch has had 25 & 27 possessions games and used the ball very well other than 1 terrible clanger that gifted Wines a goal.

I was all for Jaensch getting delisted but I have to admit he's shown big improvement. I'm sure many had already made their mind up on him and now they automatically bag him not matter how he plays.

All of you that want Jaensch dropped are not able to see past your own biasness. Apart from one kick today he was decent. His defence was better than last year especially on Monfries, but yes Wingard was too good in the air for him. Not his fault, bad match up, bad coaching. If you want Jaensch dropped, tell me why you don't expect Brown out first? I personally want Laird back in next week, but would be for Brown ahead of Jaensch. (If I was coach, Reilly out for Laird). Brown is still not providing pace and rebound. At least Jaensch is trying to. No one else in our back half can.

I agree with your point re Jaensch, but completely disagree about Brown.

Im not sure I understand people wanting to drop Brown. I thought he was fantastic in patches yesterday and under seige for most of the match. Hes the least of our problems.

Yep he was the same against Geelong as well no fuss neat skills gets the job done.

Pods needs to go before Smack he is giving us nothing. Mckernan was always going to have a bad one at some stage we need to persist he has been good up until this week.

Let's hope Lynch can get up we desperately need him. Otten would be handy also and would be our best tall forward if he was playing!

Out - Podsiadly, if he's going to be that slow and apply as little pressure as he did he better still have his form in the marking contest, haven't seen it.
- Brad Crouch, injured
- McKernan, another player that was being run around in circles and applied little pressure. Still doesn't seem to have a head on himself either.
- Shaw, injured or otherwise look liked he melted under pressure when Port Adelaide were in their forward 50.

In - Laird, applies good pressure in defense and tackles well,
- Hartigan or Thompson, both looked decent enough in defense last year and will allow Smith or Grigg to push up the ground further and provide run.
- Jenkins, can only have developed from last year when he looked good in the contest and a real power forward even if his finishing was sub-par.
- Matt Crouch, sounds like a brilliant outside runner and might as well get him in there now. Polec showed us what Mackay should play like each week.

Not so sure why people calling for Jaensch's head. Wasn't good under pressure sure, but took 14 marks and if he can improve his delivery and footy brain he'll be an integral part of our unit with Henderson out.
Johnston is often average but I feel like he's the sort of player that could kick and bag on his day. Obviously needs to improve his pressure because right now whenever he's in an even contest we might as well be a player down.

I dont even really know now to be honest. McKernan to get a reprieve out of lack of other options. Need Tex back ASAP.

Out: B.Crouch (inj.), Podsiadly, Porplyzia, Shaw, Johnston, Truck
In: M.Crouch, Jenkins, Cameron, CEY, Hartigan, Lyons

The trouble with bringing in JJ, M Crouch, Lyons etc is that none of them are going to change the basic issues which seem to be gameplan (or lack thereof), fitness and senior player attitudes. Changing the 27th best player on our list for the 26th best is simply a band aid solution that ignores the real problem. It seems to me that at the moment we are missing Dean Bailey more than any other player or person and I would like to see some changes from Sando himself rather than player changes. ie.

- Danger to half back and get the ball in his hands more and drill into him to keep his feet at all cost. He is of no use when lying on the ground but unbeatable when running with it..
- We can't play 3 tall and slow forwards with no pressure like we are as the ball comes out too easy and this kills our defence (think of Bartell last week).
- Use the sub as a tactic not a way to hide the 22nd picked player for 3 quarters.
- Get Smith into the midfield as we saw yesterday that he can be a real weapon when let off the leash.
- Petrenko as a defensive forward taking the opposition half back playmaker out of the game. He can be very good when he has a defined role just can't find it himself and with Betts now we can afford that luxury.

In: Laird, Matt Crouch, CEY, Jenkins
Out: Brad Crouch, Porplyzia, Shaw, Johnston

Not sure. Would be good if he was, Truck needs a spell.

IMO if Truck is set to retire this year Hartigan needs to get AFL games and he has the speed to play as the 3rd tall

Truck is a legend of the club however it is time we use him more strategically and their may not be an ideal match up for him every week

Out - Crouch inj, LJ, Porpy and Smack
In - Matt Crouch, Laird, JJ and either Charlie or Pets

These changes look about right.

As much as we all hope, j-Pod won't get dropped.

He won't get dropped unless he's injured. He will play at least the next 6 or 7 games.

Smack or lewis Johnston one will get dropped for JJ.

Ok. Fair call.

But can we please, please get him away from the defensive half of the ground? Perhaps make him play within our goal square and not allowed any nearer to our defense?
