Mate IMO we may need to do a forward structure readjustment
There has been little to no forward pressure and sides have been able to run the ball out with ease and IMO this is largely to playing 3 talks up front.
With this in mind it's time to consider going back to two talks and having another small forward in either Pets or Charlie to provide some real forward pressure
Would love to see Betts and Carlie who live together develop some real chemistry and develop into a real damaging small forward combo
My issue with your thoughts here is that dropping a tall for a small is only window dressing, a bandaid move which fails to address the fundamental issue. We've been dropping that 3rd tall for years in favour of this apparent "benefit" gained in having an extra small who can provide extra tackling pressure and yet the ball is still brought out of our forward line at a rate of knots.
We need to address the crux of the problem which is:
A: Delivery into the forward line
B: Forwards who actually present and take a grab/bring the ball to ground
C: Crumbers to swoop on the ball when it hits the ground
Personally I think forward line pressure is over-rated to an extent, I think when clubs can run the ball out of your forward line with such ease and regularity as clubs do ours, its not a symptom of poor pressure, its a symptom of an global dysfunctioning forward line/gameplan. Swapping a tall for a small, for the pure purpose of extra defensive pressure is a bandaid measure at best and equates to ignoring the real issue.
How this is solved at this stage of the season with the injuries we have is difficult and perhaps another quick small forward in favour of one of our talls may help. God knows the personnel we have there now, barring Betts, aren't exactly giving us much and the tall options in the SANFL aren't exactly knocking on the door.
I think we almost could bring young Charlie Cameron in for a run, with the view to giving him a rest once Walker/Lynch/Otten start coming back into the side.
If Hartigan were available though, I'd almost bring him and Jenkins in, throw Rutten forward and drop both Podsiadly and McKernan such was the pitifulness of their display yesterday. I know Rutten doesn't offer a heap going the other way, but hell I think he'd still be an improvement...
My thoughts on how we should probably line up assuming Hartigan's not available:
In: Laird, Cameron, Lyons
Out: McKernan, Porplyzia, B. Crouch (Inj)
B: Brown - Rutten - Shaw
HB: Laird - Talia - Jaensch
C: Smith - Dangerfield - Mackay
HF: Grigg - Jenkins - Douglas
F: Betts - Podsiadly - Cameron
1R: Jacobs - Thompson - Sloane
I: Johnston - Kerridge - Lyons
S: Reilly
