Would fit in perfectly with half our midfield then

This is a soft cop out response frogsy. Our club is struggling to lay effective tackles of late but the boys selected are all doing more defensive work than Lyons. It is a real weakness for him and the club is working with him to address it.

I don't get views like this.

When a player you don't like is in, its a temporary thing; but the moment they're out, then its a permanent validation of the immutable truth that you know to be true.

Doesn't really add up does it?

I actually liked what I saw of LJ last year which was against struggling teams. He is the perfect 3rd forward but at the moment we are crying out for a monster forward who can break packs and bring the ball to ground for the likes of Betts and Pets. This is obviously where we are missing Tex. Jenkins is more likely than LJ to play in this style and keep the ball in our attacking area, so JJ should be in the team.

LJ is a pure leading forward but struggles to have an influence when defensive zones are implemented. We need someone in the side to play Lynch's role but Lynch has a massive engine and his work rate is second to none. LJ is just too one dimensional and we have looked too tall in attack during round 1 & 2 and need a smaller forward line than can apply defensive pressure and cause turnovers in our half of the ground.

i think taking an overly defensive mindset to pushing hard back to defend is no where near the core problem...
it's the players who take possession and then turn the ball over, that is our biggest deficiency by a mile... stop doing this
and we leave some in the tank for later in the game... plain and simple...
poor disposal is simply not negotiable...

That and IMO he'll start getting full matches when Thommo starts getting injured or showing signs that he's past it. That could be this year but you need to give Thommo a good run of games to show which way he's headed.

Move to another club.

I really like his skillset and think he'll eventually have a good career in football. But god he must be a bit of a dunce to turn away from Melbourne's interest.

He stayed because he loves the club, too bad Sanderson doesnt like him because he could really be a good AFl footballer

There was an interview in the pride magazine where Lyons confirmed it and that he met with Melbourne. They initiated contact but Lyons decided to stay because he loves the club and adelaide.
Hopefully we repay the faith in him this year. Going to be a good inside mid for us if given the opportunity.

Wow. Surely the omitted players have to take responsibility. They were all disgraceful (Shaw probably not as bad). They cannot play disgraceful footy and complain about getting dropped. How else do we raise the standards?

I applaud it. I hope to God Sando is saying "if you don't compete 100% for this jumper, don't expect to wear this jumper again".

I can't believe people tolerate a lack of competitiveness. LJ you don't want it, it's obvious. I don't care if you can kick, you still need to play a team game.

Mckernen was omitted, don't believe it was for any other reason.

Pods is lucky. Couldn't drop all of them, we've run out of forwards. But he better compete hard in the air Nd on the ground. Supposed to be right up there in afl for tackles inside forward 50.
so LJ isn't gifted with fleet footed-ness, neither is half the list. I can't believe people think he made no effort whatsoever in the showdown, he was chasing port jumpers for most of the first half. How about the midfielders play a better team game so he doesn't have to? None of them got dropped for being lazy.

He probably would have if he didn't have to replace him with a draft pick in the 70's.
true, but that also just goes to show that we can't be too hasty in chucking genuine talent on the scrap heap.

Noone is that slow, there is a gear for chasing the final steps and he doesn't switch to it. Effort is visible he is not a zen master or pranayama guru.

what's more important, the ability to "lock the ball inside our forward 50" - Sando, or actually kicking goal every now and then?

we barely gave Port a touch for half a quarter and got a magnificent 3 goals for all that effort... shame they were able to kick 5 in 10 minutes with that open forward line of theirs, is that some crazy new idea in footy?

Lyons is just an average depth player/plodder. It is probably the one thing the Crows have correctly recognised.

Boy do I hate teachers pets and boy does Sando have his pets.
2 tall forwards in team left only and both out of form and we replace with Petrenko

Yep Sando starting to worry me as it is hard to lock ball in when bombed in and Betts has to out mark 3 on his own and chase 1 of them as 3 charge out .
How have we solved problem by dropping 2 falls and replacing one with Petrenko who stats in that role last year was embarrassing even the so called strength of tackling but his love of Pets and dislike of Lyons has proved good inside player but able to kick goals as well is just school;yard stuff.
If he did not want to leave Johnstone in team could have kept Shaw to put a little height and speed both ends.
But yep you could tell McKernan had concussion last week as he run around lost all game, not getting near the ball with a dopey look on his face .
Well guess we can only hope Danger dominates and actually puts the ball to our advantage this week to get us over the line.

Can't agree with you there.

Kid has talent and potential, if we gave him a decent run at it, he'd cement his spot in the side.

The way we've treated him over the last 12 months has been pathetic.

I like the changes! lyons is very unlucky, thought he would be given the go ahead over matty crouch only due to sydneys mids being seasoned afl big bodies.
I get why LJ has been dropped, but surely it has to be a 2 way street...pods has doing nothing since his arrival . and well smack enough has been said already ... these 2 well defiantly one in smack should be cleaning up at afl level by now, with his well built body and years in the system yet we only get teased by him. What im saying is if pods and smack as the KPP were doing their job, our forward line wouldn't be in such a mess after 2 rounds of football. LJ isnt a KPP we all know that , hes best footy is a lead up 3rd tall forward, not the main target.

This is a very similar situation to tex walker a few years back under craigy. he wasnt getting a game, dominating at sanfl level, came in at afl level, struggled , no intensity , no defensive pressure, lack of 2nd/3rd efforts etc ... every supporter wanted his head re .. sando and bicks come in and get around him and back him in. they encouraged his game style backed his flare and got good people (tippo) around him in the forward which allowed him to play his best style of footy. if tex and lynch were available for selection i think LJ would benefit immensely with these 2 in charged of the forward with directing traffic etc .. it would allow him to gain confidence at afl level and all those non-negotiables will start to show in his game. LJ has talent back him in!

Half happy with selections this week.

IN: Matt Crouch Lyons should have been ahead of him. Happy to see the kid given a chance though.
Kyle Hartigan Good to get some game time into him WITH Rutten. Need to fastrack his development.
Josh Jenkins Good to see him back and hopefully his ankle is all good. Obvious selection with Smack out.
Rory Laird You little beauty!!!
Jared Petrenko Meh. Would want to play well or curtains at end of year. Surely last chance. Maybe, just maybe Betts might make Petrenko a better player. Once again not sure how he is ahead of Lyons, even if slightly different roles.

OUT: Brad Crouch
When do we start to get concerned about his durability? Two broken legs and hamstring issues. Hopefully that's the end of his injuries for the rest of his career!
Shaun McKernan He can't win a trick. Every time he looks like stepping up he either get's suspended due to his stupidity or he gets injured. I reckon if he comes back after the concussion in good form, he might have finally turned the corner.
Lewis Johnston Love and hate this decision. I really want Johnston to succeed as he seems to have the tools and I think with an extended run he could fit in well. It's hard to play well as a leading forward when the midfield is struggling. BUT he still seems to be in cruise mode and I'm not sure if it will ever change. I think Walker needs to take him to have a chat with Tredders.
Jason Porplyzia I love Porps, but I think he should have retired last year. Draft sanctions meant we couldn't force this issue. Would love to see him regain form, but I think he'll only play if we have more injuries.
Sam Shaw I'm not sure why he was in for round 1. He needs to gain some form in the SANFL first.

I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. I don't quite get the vitriol directed at the club over his non selection. Given the vast spread of opinion between like minded contributors on this board I don't think its quite as straightforward as some would have us believe. He is currently a fringe player and unfortunately has played like a fringe player when given opportunities so far. Its clear that even first year players like M Crouch have now moved ahead of him in the pecking order. He is clearly not ticking all of the necessary boxes in the eyes of the selectors despite his 9 possession, 4 tackle 45 minutes against Geelong.

They are working with him are they? Fair enough.

Happy with the selections aside from Matt Crouch. We're a side that's already struggling to cope with a lack of fitness and you wan't to put a newbie with only one AFL preseason into our engine room? I guess they see something special in him and want him fast tracked.

The ones ticking all the boxes are the ones losing us games. Not to say that Lyons is the answer to all our ills, but maybe our boxes are wrong?

When Tex and JJ are back firing I beleive LJ will tear it up as the 3rd tall, unfortunately he is not a KPF, never will be but as the 3rd tall would be very dangerous.

I am more confidant about this game as the last two, they went as expected. This week I expect we will win.

I agree because when Tex returns and with the caveat that he hopefully returns sooner to his 2012 form, teams will be double tagging him which hopefully should free up forwards like LJ.

It's a good news story, much like when news of our Sanderson re-signing was released right around the time of our dire financial report. Or just this week when Brodie Smith's re-signing was mentioned hot on the heels of a drubbing by Port. It's a political trick, reeks of Chapman.
