Still not sure why we would contemplate playing an underdone David Mackay against a brutal contested ball side like Sydney.

It's like playing an underdone Petrenko in the finals series - it doesn't seem worth the risk unless they're among your best players.

I have no issue with the ins, but how the heck does Porps survive? Sure he has been OK'ish as a sub, but the sooner he gets back to West & finds some form the better, as his confidence is shot! Wright, Stiffy, Callinan would all be good sub options. Also, would have liked Martin to be given a full game.

I have no issue resting Lyons, as all our younger players will need to be rested at some stage, then come back in. Think they may have learnt from Brown, who probably should have been rested last week.

I'm normally a big gee for class senior players with proven reputations to be given every opportunity to re-capture that form. Porplyzia falls in that category.

However, there's a big caveat.

Porplyzia is, as much anyone in the team, a confidence player. I don't know if it's his shoulder history or just his personality, but when his confidence is down, he can't just gouge out a solid performance the way Edwards, McLeod and Roo did. So much of his game depends on his head.

To be fair, there were actually some posters who were predicting his demise around this time last year. I do not claim to be one of them.

To be fair, I made the point prior to round 1 last year.

I expressed my concern with building a backline around Dogga and Stiffy and a forward line around Nutta, Porps (and Stiffy if Sando was convinced by Bicks that he was an emerging forward). My concern with Porps related to the possibility of further injury to his shoulder.

Slippery Pete, Porps has never been quick but his other attributes hide this deficiency(a bit like Scott Thompson). Several plays in the last quarter near the members stand indicated that he now lacks fitness or he can only make an impact when he is fresh and other players are tired (i.e. as a sub).

I also refuse to believe that Lyons wont be playing. As said by other, DMac does not play well when he is carrying an injury. Some players can (Thommo, Roo) others can't and I put DMac in the second category. Late change; Out - DMac, In - Lyons. I also expect that Wrighty will play but I don't think that Thommo will miss the game. (just a hunch, no inside knowledge)

He came out and was miserable as the sub, and was dropped shortly afterwards.


Porps, by contrast, has had a few good games as sub. That would be why he's kept his place - but he'd still be very much on notice.

I think the rage from the fact we are 5-5 has carried over to the team selection discussion.

Very logical and smart decisions this week:

1. Smack in for Brodie Martin. Returns us to a much better structure.

2. Henderson in for Brown. Brown gets a well deserved rest until after the bye and Ricky comes back in. Laird played alot more up the ground (bit of a utility role) against Freo. He will take over Browns small shutdown defender role, with Ricky being used as Mr. Fixit.

3. Crouch in for Lyons. Both inside midfielders - Crouch is much more highly rated. Just proves once again that where a player is drafted does have a big impact on the opportunities given to a player. Lyons unlucky, but is still on track to play about 15 games this year.

To the Yo-Yo (Porpoise). Lets hope the club has drawn a line through him for a full game. Should just be locked in as our specialist sub for the rest of the year.

I would absolutely love for Lyons to come in for Mackay. I have wanted Mackay out of the side since Rd.2. Has shown flashes this year, but is still thought of a the player he could be, not the actual player he is... If Mackay is the late out - we need Lyons starting on the field and not kept in the Green Vest until 3qtr time when the game is gone and we have been smashed in the clearances all day.

Vince wasn't miserable as the sub. Came out and actually played pretty well.

In a quarter and a bit he managed to get the ball 14 times and use it pretty well.

Had the 2nd most Clearances for the Crows (4) after only playing 35% of the game. Was equal 3rd for Crows in tackles.

What cost him his spot was his stupid free kicks and the 50 metre penalty he gave away. Those undisciplined acts cost him 1 week.

Because Bernie's problems were attitudinal. He needed a quick kick up the backside to get his head back into the right space. Apologies for the mixed metaphors.

Porps is just flat out of form. A kick up the backside is not what's needed. As for what is needed.. I would hope that a person with Sando's player management skills would have a better idea than the BF intelligentsia.

It is very clear that Sando rates Porps highly and wants to see him regain form without having to drop him from the AFL level. That said, surely his patience must be running out. Surely?

As for Lyons.. I'm with Jenny on this one. The coaching staff have a much better idea about the players and their conditioning than the rest of us do. Lyons has spent more time in the guts than the other youngsters and it stands to reason that his body has taken more of a battering than Kerridge/Laird/Brown. If they say he needs a rest, then I'm happy to back them on it. If it turns out to be more than a rest, meaning that we've been lied to (and it wouldn't be the first time), then I will be less than impressed.

I also think it is stupid to throw away a top 8 spot (and play all kids) for the simple fact that if we even play 1 final with the current crop of less than 50 gamers, finals experience is gold for youngsters' development. Getting 8 or 9 young players 1 games finals experience is way better than playing 12 or more inexperinced players and having Melbourne or GWS like losses. It doesn't promote a winning culture & the kids get very little out of being thrashed.

I am with you Peter.
For maybe a 3-4 week period the team may drop off minimally. Invest those 3 or 4 games in a worthy kid and guess what?
You may actually end up in front of where you were!

The only way we can improve is by playing players with upside....

McKay hasn't played for 10 years, and is the GM of FO at Carlton, so I don't think he'd really improve the team.

Plus we'd get fined for playing someone not on our list.

SANFL is a rest compared to AFL.

I also reckon there is a degree of foxing particularly with Mackay. With Mackay's form being variable and now an injury concern I can't see him being played unless he is 100%.

No it's not. First game of the year I went to Norwood v Port. The Port boys were training out the front. They were huge. Being tackled and pummeled by these blokes would also hurt. Besides he would get more game time playing for Glenelg and be expected to do more midfield work being a key player for Glenelg.

I was addressing the ever-growing list of players people are calling for to be dropped....... there are calls for Porps and Reilly to be dropped too.

With regards to Crouch, they were making sure his hamstring was 100%. Surely you are not going to get your knickers in a twist when the club is managing a young player returning from injury.

With regard to Lyon, how do you know that he doesn't need a freshen up? He could well have soreness that would benfit from not playing against the Swans but not enough to completely sideline him.

Before you think your opinion is always correct go read the Dangerfield thread from the start and get some perspective.

I tend to agree that no-one knows how overworked the host of Footy Classified & the Footy Show is.

But let's look at the rest theory. If he doesn't play for Glenelg he needed a rest. If he does then it's a bullshit excuse, which considering he's an emergency for this game suggests it is.

I was just saying lots of posters needlessly get themselves worked up by assuming the club is always making the wrong decision. Reading that thread always gives a little perspective before posting.

I am also not saying my opinion is always right. But I also acknowledge I don't have all the info the club has. I would rather Lyons than Porps but they are not going to make 4 or 5 changes. Something has to give at some stage.

So you think that SANFL football is just as intense as AFL? And that game in the SANFL wouldn't allow a player a slight freshen up whilst still maintaining fitness? Or they might ask Glenelg to only play him 70% game time to manage him like Crouch at Westies?
