Prediction Changes vs Sydney

Rotham is 192cm around 86kgs Cole is 185cm and around 80kgs. I think there's some merit in the idea that purely based on their body types they arent like for like.
They're not identical. But that doesn't mean they're "completely different". They are both small/medium defenders subject to broadly similar requirements. That's quite a bit in common.

And the Hickster will actually win the ruck battle. Let's not forget, before he got injured, the Hickster was performing vastly superior to Vardy, and preferred as the sole ruck over him.

True but Hickey's injured.

Very risky playing a lone ruck who isn't fit.

Maybe not this year but next I can see NicNat holding the ruck with support from Oscar, Darling, McGovern and Barrass.

I know he has never been an endurance ruckman but with that amount of support forward and back he doesn't need to run to every ruck contest, just handle the midfield ruck work.

Against sides without an elite ruck I could see us playing Nic only.

Rotham for Hurn seems like the consensus. I'm still far from sold on Nelson.

Petch needs to lift, 1 goal in the last 3 weeks. How far away is Cameron?

Petch is the only player who is under pressure form wise. Do we bring in another bigger mid against the Swans or back our pace?

SCG being such a small, short ground we really should look at swapping out Waterman for another hard working mid? You don't need another 3rd link up tall forward but the kid just played his best game.

Ah chee or MAllen in for either Petch or Waterman?

More likely no change.

It would be very nice to knock off the Swans in Sydney before the bye. Can't remember the last time we beat them never mind in Sydney.

I think Petch is going OK. He has been doing some nice stuff in tight and adding another string to his bow.
He can be a weapon when he receives and i think getting rid of a speedster against the Swans at the SCG is not a good move.
Waterman will remain. Simmo quoted as saying they have stuffed him around and they want to give him an extended run at it. Given he played his best game last night I would think safe as houses for this week.

The only change would be if Hurn is either ruled out or rested as a precaution (IMO he should be). So that leaves Nelson or Rotham. Given what we saw from Rotham- I would have him every day of the week. Nelson played a negating role last week but 4 touches is 4 touches. Given the production of Hurn and his delivery, we need to replace him with a bloke who can get plenty of it and use it well. Rotham in if Hurn out.

For him to be under pressure, there would need to be someone from the Beagles pushing for selection in that position. Cameron was very quiet on Sunday and the club have listed Venables as longer out and I’d expect a very conservative return.

What small defender would replace him?

Rotham makes us too tall.
JoRo being two inches taller than Cole isn't a deal-breaker, particularly against a tallish forwardline such as Sydney's.

He moves well, makes good decisions and has good skills and closing speed.

Waterman keeps his spot regardless of SCG dimensions. He was brilliant on the weekend and played down the wing. Much rather see him do that than Hutchings or bringing Masten back.

Petch needs a rest, even his blistering pace has dropped off in recent weeks. Wouldn't hurt bringing in Ah Chee, his more mature body and elite handballs would be good at the SCG.

Venables wouldn't be too far away either.

I like Rotham and what he showed in his first two games. Unlucky to be dropped.

But he isn't a small backman.

Happy for him to cover Duggan, Shep or Hurn who play taller.

Hurn will likely miss with a low grade hammie and Rotham comes in.

So JoRo could cover Duggan, but not Cole? Huh?

JoRo is a medium defender. He could absolutely cover Cole, particularly against a tallish forwardline.

Rotham for Hurn is a good call but I don`t think Hurn will miss ..

Rotham makes us too tall.

Cole is a back pocket, does his job and doesn't get noticed as much as someone has to lock down and defend. Can't all be intercept rebounding defenders.

Cole is our Junkyard dog fights and scraps for everything , not pretty but gets the job done ..

Duggan, Shep and Hurn play tall and small. They play the intercept and rebounding role much more than Cole does.

Cole doesn't, he's a lock down small defender.

Rotham is closer to Hurn than Cole. I've been saying for quite a while Rotham is Hurn's long term replacement, third tall half back flanker with a good kick.

It is about roles and balance in the back six. Nelson is a closer direct swap for Cole not that I rate Nelson as a small defender, think Nelson would be much better played up the ground or as a tagger.

This is too rigid an account of what certain players can and can't do. Roles are well and good but this doesn't mean there is zero flexibility. Cole is "small". JoRo is "medium". Therefore one cannot cover the other? Not buying it. It's not useful to put players in boxes like this.

Peteuccelle is probably due for a rest or spell in the WAFL. most of his disposals skewed off the boot. Not sure if its because hes spent when he kicks or cant steady himself when at pace.

With the SCG not being an afl sized ground. Are we way too tall going in? Petrucelle wont have the space to use his pace.

Out: Hurn, Petrucelle
In: Rotham, AhChee
