We stopped them with Corr and Bonar last year until the umps decided to stamp their influence. Reckon Comben could be in by then. Then two of Pink, Corr and Dawson. Today's haul for Hogan was as much a result of GWS' superior transition run as anything else. Carlton don't run as hard as that.

Don't get me wrong, we'll have to take our opportunities, but Carlton don't scare me around the ground at all
Hard agree. Carlton aren’t the real deal imo. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite me but they rely way too much on getting “up and about” rather than good coaching and being a well drilled machine like typical premiership teams. They can look irresistible with a run on but they’re always vulnerable to an extent.

We absolutely can beat them.

Backed, especially the up and about thing. There's a chance that if we seriously rattle them a bit they'll crumble. They're no GWS, who are a well-oiled machine built for war.

Well-oiled, that’s the correct metaphor for a machine!! Maybe I’m a pedant but I knew my post wasn’t quite right lol. And well-drilled is the one for war too.

Regardless, they are not in the Giants league. Few are.

Drilled, oiled - all the right pieces are in the right places for them, I think we can all confirm after today.

Changes not easy after after a tough first game with a lot of players supposedly having good summers,,,,,hard to make wholesale changes based on that game, I'm not too concerned I honestly think could be a swans/gws GF this year.

That said, Out Goater in Lmac if fit (if not Bergman), out CJ for Greenwood. Out Pink, in Chom. If Jy is ready he has to come in for someone, perhaps Tucker (i'd prefer to see Laz stay in).

I'd also like to see Harvey come in and then there's Phillips. I'm really torn on a couple of players....love Paul Curtis, can do things that few others can, but just don't see enough of it, frustrating. Also don't want to be critical of guys playing first game for the club, but I was pretty disappointed with Fischer at times..... I really thought he "heard footsteps" on a few occasions. I know he's not the most physical guy going around but sometimes you just have to go.

Bring your mouth guards to training, lets see who wants to play next week.

Don’t care about the changes. Just here to say it’s a MUST WIN. If we lose this, it could have a huge impact on the confidence of the team. Essentially guaranteeing 0-4 to start the season would be a disaster imo. And no I’m not overreacting. I just think we need to win early.
I agree don't want to get 0-4 and have the a repeat of last year.

OUT:
Lazzaro - this midfield is broken if he is playing inside mid. Even for 25% of the time.

Fisher - why do we want the ball in his hands coming out of defence when we have sheezel & Kerch? Also he is a liability as a defender.

IN:
Simpkin - No half forward crap, the midfield needs him. I think we need to run Zurhaar & Stephenson through there too. We are scrapping the barrel for options.

Sellers & Comben - we need to find more marking power forward and back. Can’t keep playing Zurhaar as a key tall. Got Buckley for most of the game and he just can’t compete in the air. Not when we are bombing it in most of the time.

George & Hardeman - get them in asap, we need more talent.

Our midfield is a concern. We are not big enough and/or don’t cover the ground fast enough. The giants mids were bigger, stronger and faster.

Corr stays because he’s the only key defender who has played more than 10 ****ing games.

I’m willing to give Lazzaro one more week. If he spuds it up bring back Phillips.
Tucker was horrible also but he never plays well away from Marvel. He’ll rebound next week.

OUT: Goater CCJ Pink
IN: Jy Comben Greenwood

If Jy isn’t ready then Bergman.

Phillips would have looked terrible today FWIW.

GWS cut us up through the middle and Will is probably the weakest / slowest defensive runner we have.

Not that that means he shouldn't come in but he isn't the answer to the issues we faced today.

Our clearance work was generally pretty solid.

Agree that he wouldn’t have helped at all in stopping the transition game of gws.

However Lazzaro had 0 clearances. Phillips is much more effective in this area.

I think Lazz deserves a large block to see what he can do. I don’t think he was bad today. Not great but I’d say that was easily his second best game of afl footy.

How did the VFL praccy boys go today, Will Phil, Hardeman, Sellers ,Comben, Harvey, Archer etc ?
WHITE 3.3 9.5 14.11 21.13 (139)
BLUE
3.2 3.5 5.5 6.7 (43)

GOALS
White:
Sellers 6, Harvey 4, Greenwood 3, Lowson 2, Drury 2, Hansen jnr, Watkins, Smith, Taylor
Blue: Lambert 2, Hodgson, Harrop, Downie, Wynd

Reading the track watcher comments, Will Phil and Hardeman played well as did Harvey and Sellers. Free dominated Goad. Archer was solid. Comben was solid to good, albeit with rusty disposal at times.

I think they all need some time together before we pot any of them but I don't think anyone should be banned because they don't think much of Pink or be called a coward cos they won't take a stupid bet aimed at keeping them out of a thread where everyone says stupid stuff. Corr looked underdone and a bit lost but he wasn't the only one.
This is my take to, ferbs. Its unfair to pot the defensive unit after a couple of practice games and round 1. Other than goater, they probably go in with the same.

I find it hard to pot any of the defenders the way the ball was coming in with such little pressure.

I have my concerns with Laz but he did have the most pressure acts and he probably played Jy’s high half forward role which isn’t an easy role to play.

Need to lock the ball in our front half. In many ways it was good to cop the Giants first up as I doubt any other team will be so violent on turnover. Taylor, Buckley Himmleberg destroyed us in the air and their foot skills moving forward were great.

Changes
In - Jy, Bergs
Out - Goater, Shiels

Laz gets the vest

I must be the only one who thinks we're a sneaky chance on Good Friday. Shlong, Brisbane, no hope, but I think we can rattle Carlton. As long as the umps are obliging, of course. What a mare they had last year
You know that Curnow will kick 5 from frees, and Larkey won't get any for identical things. McKay and Curnow are going to feast on our backline.

Ive watched at least half of every game thus far. GWS are a cut above and Shitney are not far behind. They’re clearly at this stage the two best sides in it.

There wasn’t much pressure on the ball coming through the midfield either.

He made a few mistakes, but wasn’t as bad as Nostrils wants everyone to believe.

If we are potting defenders for bad games, let’s start with someone like Aiden Corr.
yep compare the pair, first game admirable, 100+ game slower than my nanna and she is no longer with us.
Pink gave his all in what was a depleted back line as did Dawson.
