Pretty simple changes this week for mine.

McDonald or Bergman in for Goater- Think McDonald is the logical replacement however if still under done then Bergman gets first crack.

Comben in for Pink- I think this is a no brainer, Comben is the only 200cm bloke we have and he simply must play this week in preparation for Good Friday against Curnow and McKay.

Simpkin in for Tucker. It’s a toss up for Mine whether it’s Lazarro or Tucker, I believe Lazarro deserves 1 more crack at it whereas Tucker has played 100 games and shown 0 to suggest he’s nothing more then an average footballer.

CCJ gets 1 more, if fails again he’s out for Sellers who gets an extended run. Also a no brainer for me that Greenwood needs to be sub as he is so versatile, shiels great leadership however offers nothing on field anymore.

Ohhh so that's why chad has had two in the Pink despite his objectively terrible performance. Makes sense now
There's nothing wrong with backing a guy who helped your side win a flag but going off the deep end about it when he's struggling is a bit much.

I find it hard to pot any of the defenders the way the ball was coming in with such little pressure.

I have my concerns with Laz but he did have the most pressure acts and he probably played Jy’s high half forward role which isn’t an easy role to play.

Need to lock the ball in our front half. In many ways it was good to cop the Giants first up as I doubt any other team will be so violent on turnover. Taylor, Buckley Himmleberg destroyed us in the air and their foot skills moving forward were great.

Changes
In - Jy, Bergs
Out - Goater, Shiels

Laz gets the vest
"Violent on turnover" pretty much sums them up. LOL. If we play Laz he has to play the whole game. Playing sub isn't gonna help him.

Every time Taylor took an intercept mark it seemed to chain to a scoring shot for the Giants.

They took some serious chances with their ball movement as well, underground kicks etc.

If JY is ok to play then he plays midfield. Anyone thinking he is still isn’t in our top 3 mids is crazy.
Hmm possibly yes but I think LDU and Wardlaw need to be playing majority mid rotation. Powell and Simpkin are pretty close but Simpkin plays half forward much better than Powell. So top three in rotations will be LDU, Wardlaw and Powell/Phillips. Simpkin playing hybrid mid / fwd I think suits the team best.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Shiels looked every bit his age today.

Baffling to have him as a sub in the first place, but walked into the game with dropped marks, fumbles etc.

I get he’s a Clarko favorite, but we have that much young talent, he’s not providing anything on field imo, if we want him as a mentor, take him with the team on away games.

Would have been much better with any of Phillips, Harvey, Hardeman etc as the sub.

If we want an experienced type, Greenwood can cover a mid, ruck, key forward in the event of injury.

We are mad if he’s playing 10+ games this year, it’s completely pointless.

Have him mentor the young guys in the VFL, his presence there would be even more valuable.
Not sure why Shiels was sub today, he is a grinder rather than an impact player, maybe he is underdone. However, he should play every game until someone pushes him out of the team. He has been a solid AFL player for 15 years and was 8th in our B & F last year. The reason he plays is so we can try and win. Guys like Phillips and Lazarro shouldn't play ahead of him (or Tucker) until they show in the VFL that they are above that standard by consistently dominating games. We finally have a bit of depth, we don't need to give players games based on hope. They need to earn it.

I know it's early and I wouldn't want to suggest panic stations are required, I thought that was a solid hit out against a team that has been in great from for the last 15-20 games... with that said I wouldn't complain if we laced Sellers up for a debut. Whilst young in AFL / tall forward terms (and slightly undersized) he is physically ready, good form and he frees up Zurhaar to inject physicality upfield as well.

Shiels I think was underdone and brought in for experience with Jy out as well, I'd say that failed similarly to the Corr experience but it's not a sprint as they say and not the worst thing to try to get some experience up and running ASAP.

I'd genuinely consider the following changes (not saying the only ones, just key ones):

Out: CCJ, Goater
Ins: Comben, Sellers

In all honesty I'd flick Laz for Jy in a heartbeat if he was ready, it's harsh absolutely, but I just can't see it working personally.

I think we need to some physical height up and running in the backline ASAP and Comben is the only one that we have, Sellers I've already touched on. In simple terms though he's fit, in form, will be hungry as all hell and he provides options for us. Even on TV it was obvious to see CCJ running to the same spots as Larkey something that I think Sellers would be much smarter about.

Edit: BTW I still stand by being happy to see Comben straight back into the forward line when ready.

Phillips would have looked terrible today FWIW.

GWS cut us up through the middle and Will is probably the weakest / slowest defensive runner we have.

Not that that means he shouldn't come in but he isn't the answer to the issues we faced today.

Our clearance work was generally pretty solid.
Will is one of our better defensive mids, behind only Wardlaw really. We at least would have put up some resistance against Green getting it 37 times.

Changes
Goater hopefully not too bad hopefully only misses a week or 2
Sheils
Powell All out
Ins
Sellers 6 goals today
Harvey 6 goals today
Coleman Jones to come on and off the bench and a Toss up between between Curtis and Ford as the sub
As for Simpkin just got the feeling the club will rest him again.
Ok was praying Goater injury wasn’t to bad as he limped off but hopefully the operation goes well has plenty of rest and is ready for Round 1 in 2025 as I thought this year was going to be a big one for him such a shame.
As for replacements for Goater you would say Bergmann then Hardenham maybe George have to see else is available after that.

And would win more ball the other way along with being cleaner than Laz with it

OUT:
Lazzaro - this midfield is broken if he is playing inside mid. Even for 25% of the time.

Fisher - why do we want the ball in his hands coming out of defence when we have sheezel & Kerch? Also he is a liability as a defender.

IN:
Simpkin - No half forward crap, the midfield needs him. I think we need to run Zurhaar & Stephenson through there too. We are scrapping the barrel for options.

Sellers & Comben - we need to find more marking power forward and back. Can’t keep playing Zurhaar as a key tall. Got Buckley for most of the game and he just can’t compete in the air. Not when we are bombing it in most of the time.

George & Hardeman - get them in asap, we need more talent.

Our midfield is a concern. We are not big enough and/or don’t cover the ground fast enough. The giants mids were bigger, stronger and faster.
We have the forward power to run CZ as a 70% mid. Does he have the fitness? If so, just do it. If we aren’t playing WP, we need someone who can get in there and shake things up because LDU, Powell and Laz would have to be the softest midfield in the history of the game.

l would go Simpkin in for Sheils and Greenwood in for CCJ but thats not going to happen.
Bergman in for Goater before McDonald
Also maybe Sellers in for Lazzaro..as sub

Out: Lazz(as I’ve said before he’s not an AFL footballer), Goat, CCJ (don’t want to see him again).
In: Jy, Greenwood and whoever plays the best in the VFL for the hbf position.

I'd expect McDonald and Simpkin if they're ready to come in for Goater and Shiels.

If they're not, probably just the 1 change. Bergman for Goater.

Agree, the coaching group has spent all summer getting that 23 onto the field, so it's not reasonable to expect they aren't going to throw up their hands after an away trip to a top four side.

imo it'll be forced changes only
