But, but ... it was all Neil Craig's fault.

You aren't ever going to keep every player happy. I do agree that Sando has made some bewildering decisions at selection, but he's not the only Coach to ever have done so. They have their reasons. If a player walks because of that, so be it.

It happens at every club. Ask Jack Gunston.

Wasn't he being played though?

Edit: He played two games in first year with us, 12 in the second (pretty constant from Round 8 onwards of the second year). Hawks played him for 19 games- I remember him being dropped for 5 games (?) early on in the season due to poor form. He then worked his way back into the team.

Wright in for Kerridge - Sam form has dropped off & needs a rest & Wright had a good last game in the SANFL.

Two weeks ago Sam Kerridge was universally named Best on Ground in a hard fought win in Melbourne. He received a perfect 10 in the AFL Coaches Award.

He was then given tagging roles against two of the top four teams "and his form has dropped off". BOG one week, quiet the next = form drop off. It's lucky that Porps and DMac haven't had a drop in form. I guess your form can't drop too much if you haven't played any good matches let alone been BOG.

Does anyone know who the Crows selection committee is ?

I'm sure the players are as confused about selection as we are.
Funny how Sando was saying that he wants to create a culture where players want to stay at the club. Some of the selections and positions players are playing doesn't show that.

I'm quite sure the players are not as confused as we are. The coaches explain precisely to the players not only why they are not in the side, but what they need to do to get back into the side.

As for creating a culture where players want to stay, I would hate to think we would make selection decisions based on not pissing off whingers.

I don't think this is anywhere near as big an issue for the players as it is for the people here.

You would note in the rest of my quote which you delete that I stated Porps should have been dropped & I would have played Lyons/Crouch ahead of Mackay who was average before injured.

Kerridge does need a rest, but Lyons/Crouch have had theirs & should have come back in IMO. Young players need to be managed properly & rarely can play a full season as their bodies are not up to it.

Serious question, what do you think they've told Stiffy & Lyons & Riley?

I could only guess, really.

With Johncock I suspect they've told him they're not going to play him in defence anymore, so it's small forward or bust for his AFL career. If he can demonstrate that he is able to put on defensive pressure up forward without letting his offensive output drop too far, he'll get a game.

With Lyons, I honestly believe they are actually resting him. I know it seems strange, but the club is extremely professional in this regard and keep track of absolutely heaps of metrics on players, everything from quality of sleep, to weight room performance, to muscle recovery rates after training. If the numbers start to dip too far, there is serious science that indicates said player is at a significantly higher risk of suffering various injuries. They'll be telling him that his various fitness/wellness metrics have dipped too low and that he will be rested until they return to the proper values, and will subsequently be reintroduced assuming his SANFL numbers are reasonable. I have no doubt that they are happy with the form he's shown so far and would be telling him as much, and letting him know that they see him as a regular starting player for them going forward.

With Riley, I've got no idea. Presumably there is an aspect of his game outside of winning contested ball that they want him to work on.

Agreed Stabby - I think they are taking a long term view with Lyon's development. Regardless of whether we think he should be able to put 12, 15 or 20 games together at his age, they are infinitely more qualified to assess what he is actually capable of right now, and what is in the best interest for his development and longevity with the club.

Off topic, I just heard Phil Harper explanation of this weeks changes. Fair dinkum, I swear he's attended the Jeff Gieschen School of Explaining Shit.

Why is he of all people given a role like that? He is the Nathan van Berlo of our administration - the club need to find some sort of role for him, but just can't find anything that he's particularly good at.

Did they forget to write down the measurements last week?

When players are picked regardless of form, I think that creates problems in a team environment.
If we get beaten badly on the weekend, do you think it will have any relevance to the decisions made by the selection table recently?

Jaensch in for Petrenko - Matty has been in form & unlucky to be dropped, so have no issue.
Wright in for Kerridge - Sam form has dropped off & needs a rest & Wright had a good last game in the SANFL.
Brown in for Reilly - Radar has been in poor form, so brining in Brown back from injury appears obvious.
Mackay in for Crouch - this is the most contentious decision, as Mackay wasn't in great form before his injury. If it were Lyons in for Crouch, it would have made more sense. I still suspect it will effectively be Mackay for Thompson & Lyons for Crouch... & if so, have no issue.

My main issue is with Porplyzia being picked, particularly as a non-sub, where he hasn't had a decent game ALL year! This is a gold pass. Stiffy would be more deserving than Porps & could run out the game more.
Couldn't agree more with all points!
Porps does not deserve to play. I suspect though that there are two factors. The first is how young our team is. The second is that it may be his last shot. If he can't produce something this week we may not see him again after the bye.
With Crouch, I would like to see him take Reilly's spot across half back. I think he would do well to learn the game there.

I'm quite sure the players are told exactly why they have been left out and what they need to do to get back in. This is not a new thing - all clubs do it and have done so for quite some time. It's pretty much the most important aspect of managing young people.

I'm not privy to the conversations themselves though so I can only make educated guesses about the content of a particular such discussion.

This is what concerns me about Crouch's selection. He clearly was not ready to play. Why did they play him? I can only assume they've decided to "throw out the rulebook" when it comes to the selection of Crouch, since he's such a highly-rated young talent. Of course, the Crows have never been in a position where they've had to manage the introduction of a top-rated selection before. I'm worried they might have no idea how to handle it. Do we hold off like we would for someone else? Do we fasttrack him? He doesn't seem to be recovering from his hamstring injury, do we just push through it? With such a highly-touted talent like Crouch the stakes are higher than for someone (with all due respect) like Lyons.

I can only hope we're going with the opinions of our fitness and medical staff.

Interesting listening to Rowey and Bone having a real crack at selections this year
