If Bucks is true to his word re performance, then Varcoe is out. He stunk. A lot.
Phillips also stunk, nearly 30 disposals and butchered at least 20 of them. Though, at this time of the year, a lot of players will be sorry and sore for the best part of the week.... Phillips, with his elite fitness will bounce back hard and probably atone for Friday’s shitfest.
We need tough, hard bodies vs the Tigers.
In: Greenwood, Sier/Wills
Out: Varcoe, Brown.

Who actually put their hands up in the BFL practice match?

In order, Wills, Lynch, Appleby, Crocker, Brown, Madgen. Got pretty thin after that. Daicos was sporting significant upper thigh bandaging and didn't seem to get much game time. I assume Greenwood was the carry over. A2B2 had some eye catching moments. The Sack battled manfully. IQ's radar was way off. The Irish lads both had moments but generally looked pretty green (no pun intended). Sier seemed to get where the ball wasn't a lot. I think that was all the senior listed blokes who played or who'd be in contention.

Wills in for Brown an option? Bigger body should come in handy against Tiges with Rance out.

Seems ridiculous that we're going straight into a 6 day break. I dunno about AFL players but I'm always dead sore after playing round 1.

I know I’m going to cop it for this, but Mayne and Phillips were terrible tonight.
Decision making and execution wise. Shocking.

You just described most of the 22 that were out there, apart from maybe Moore and Elliott. Pendles' numbers looks good on paper but there wasn't a lot of attack in his game tonight.

Steele was rubbish. Treloar was rubbish. Beams looked ok at times but rinse and repeat long bombs inside F50 that weren't really to our forwards' advantage don't cut the mustard. The others who rotated through the midfield don't even rate a mention. The number of times we got caught out with all three on-ballers prematurely moving to the offensive side of the clearance when the ball was still up for grabs at the stoppage was alarming.

Only positive to come out of Friday night was that we probably couldn't have been more down across the board and we were still in the game at the end.

I live in hope that Adams is a surprise selection but, regardless, Greenwood's gotta come in. With Rance already out, a hard tag on Cotchin will take us a long way towards getting on top of the Tiges.

Despite a quiet VFL practise match, I'd bring Sier in too. Some players just play better on the bigger stage. He's one of them. We need him in and under, winning the hard ball and distributing it to Pendles, Treloar, Sidey, Beams, etc

I'd also really like to see Maynard get some midfield time. I like his mongrel, line-breaking and penetrating kicking.

OUT Brown Phillips
IN Greenwood Sier

FB Langdon ~ Roughead ~ Aish
HB Howe ~ Moore ~ Crisp
C Sidebottom ~ Pendles ~ Maynard
HF Stephensen ~ Mihochek ~ Beams
FF DeGoey ~ Cox ~ Elliott
R Grundy ~ Sier ~ Treloar
INT Mayne ~ Thomas ~ Greenwood ~ Varcoe

GO PIES!

That sounds dire.

I’d agree with this but I just can’t see Phillips being dropped.

Yes, I think you're probably right in saying that Phillips won't be dropped (but he should be).

IMO, a statement needs to be made at the selection table after our insipid Rd1 performance. The message needs to be sent that soft efforts and consistently poor decision-making and disposal won't be tolerated. Dropping Phillips would send that message.

And what do you propose when Steele and Treloar put up a similar performance again, because they weren't much better than Phillips yesterday? Or do we only "send a message" by dropping the whipping boys who aren't on big coin?

Lot of focus after the GF on the under-sized Pies' defence against Eagles. Due to KPD injuries, Pies were not tall or big enough against Kennedy, Darling and Vardy. It didn't help that Howe was going at 85% rat power that game. Something that has been overlooked a bit. Howe plays tall but didn't quite have his usual leap that day. The balance was not that far off though bearing in mind it worked pretty well for us in the other three finals (Eagles won QF but KPFs did not get a hold). Moore at 203cm is now back there and looking superb. But reckon we over-compensated last night with an over-sized defence. Rather see Goldsack in defence against Tigers instead of Roughhead. Moore on Jack R. Quite OK with Goldsack on Tom 'Lunch' who looks to me like he's barely going. Goldsack won't run it out of defence but he will lay plenty of tackles and has some pace. Roughhead does not offer either. Not saying Roughead was poor last night but just don't think we had the right balance in defence. Tigers have a small fast fwd line. Happy to see Roughhead back against Eagles in R3.

Goldsack will play Lynch into form. He should never be playing on key forwards. His role should be more third tall at best. Which we are well equipped for , hence he has been played forward in pre season

I don’t think we’re playing Lynch from our reserves.

Their Lynch? He was pretty scratchy himself on a Thursday.

Our defence was quite ok, we just didn’t connect properly forward. Many entries forward of 50, marks not sighted.
Missing numerous easy shots. Odd decisions forward.

Hence we lost by 70 Points In Big Footy world 7 points.

Yes, the defence largely stood up otherwise we would of lost by 5 or 6 goals rather then 7 points.

Next week. 26 degrees. It’s going to be exactly the same which plays into Richmond’s hands. All we do is fumble and they scrap like savages.

If the mids don’t put up a fight, that’s almost the season done.

Cotchin will have our mids hearing footsteps given his recent years predilection for a bit of nastiness in his approach on the man and ball often in a snipe-ish fashion too.

Valid statement. Add Crisp to that. I know people say he is attacking etc. he turned it over at least half a dozen times last night. Essentially the difference in the score

Crisp had 5 clangers and went at 65% DE it is a high clanger count but he had 3 other mates with 5 clangers Moore, Sideass and Stephenson.

Then Grundy had 6 and Treloar had a whopping 10.

We also had Beams, Cox, Varcoe and Mihoceck on 4.

It was a benny hill show across the board especially Treloar he had a mare.

We want players to have to earn games and fight for their spots. Sier has not done that and should be in the Magoos until he earns his place back.

Jeesus Dave! You wouldn't be panicking or anything like that! Your 3 ins seem to have done nothing at VFL level to deserve a game, while only one of your 3 outs, Thomas, makes any sense at all. o_O:eek: Sure Crisp sprayed the ball and Howe didn't have a great game, but both will be better for the run, or at least you'd hope they would be.

WTF Dave. Are we tanking by round 2?
Sier I can understand, but the other 2 have done nothing to earn a spot yet. They are green rookies & need to be developed carefully.
I think Howe Crisp & Thomas have enough runs on the board to forgive them for a rusty round 1. It's one game, settle down with your sharp axe.
Especially seeing Melbourne, Sydney & the Eagles were all worse than we were.

I rekon Adams will be right for next Week. Knowing the bloke he will play with a bandaged finger at 70%... the only thing stopping him will be the doc.

My changes

In Adams
Out Brown - I’ve seen a few patches in JLT and gee game but he needs another preseason and some confidence. Could be our Worpedo if he believes.
