Fair point. But it did work last year and I also think the issue was less about balance and more about poor execution. I could deal with Brown being dropped but would be concerned about what that does to his head space. He was poor in JLT 1, came back a lot better in the second game.

Last year we had two for the majority of the season and used three sparingly. Four was too many and it was no coincidence they spent the least time on the ground of our 22, IMO.

This isn’t U12’s and for mine he was extremely lucky to be included last night after what was a disappointing pre-season. His practice match v the Dees was worse than against Fremantle. That’s 3 from 4 matches this year not up to scratch and when your win now you can’t afford to have unproven players searching for confidence/ form.

It wasn’t going to be the difference, but Greenwood/ Sier/ Wills last night would have been beneficial.

i know i might be going a little early on this one but i like to be ahead of the pack.... i think we should think about dropping buckley....
For the second time in sequence was clearly outcoached by Scott with their deep defensive pressure. Umpteen coaches on big dollars at Pies and with star studded midfield and AA Ruckman Pies were on the negative side of centre clearances which contributed to loss.

We really, really missed some strength around stoppages. Sier has to play given Adams' unavailability.

OUT: Brown
In: Sier

I'd also consider bringing Greenwood in for Aish for some intensity in defense, although I don't think we should necessarily react too much - I do think Aish is the long-term action.

couple too many underdone (Howe, JDG and Crisp were not rock hard match fit)
Can add Elliott to that list, he was noticeably stretching his legs immediately after his goal on half time.

A tad harsh.

People were saying much same about Mayne only a year ago.

For all Crocker’s weaknesses (slow, struggles to win 1v1) he is a strong mark, kicks straight, gets in the right positions.

I reckon Thomas will be given a chance to get back into form, but it’ll be re-evaluated when WHE is available in a few weeks.
That’s likely the path they’ll take.
Agree.

But nice we still have competition for spots.

I saw that and he looked cherry ripe to me. His ability to get sepation on the lead, his cleanliness and pressure on the opposition ball carrier were bang on. It was the performance of a guy that had 80 minute hit outs in 3 practice matches. A few others looked like they’d strolled in off the street at times and just couldn’t adjust to the lift in intensity...

Out: Mayne, Mihocek
In: Sier, Greenwood

Moore up forward, Langdon and Howe to play talker.

The only change I would make (if possible) is Adams in.

Make all of them watch that game five times this week as punishment......that includes the coaches.

P.S. If you can’t kick on your opposite foot don’t try.

We allowed Geelong to control the tempo and really slow the game from the start. I'm not sure if we can have Stephenson playing anywhere but forward. He isn't strong or aggressive enough to win his own ball. With Elliott and Degoey I feel he needs to build in the two's. We desperately needed some grit which Sier and Adams will provide. Langdon was average at best but we aren't going to give Goldsack games over youth although the Sack would have been handy.

Some talk is required in the backline. We have too many players all going for the same ball, spoil, kill.

Out
Stephenson

Sier

He shouldn’t be.

Moore in defence is one of the few things which worked for us last night, maybe the only thing. It didn't win us the game but it spared more damage.

On the other hand, Moore in the forward line last night wouldn't have helped our appalling midfield deliver it into the offensive 50 with any more precision or intelligence than it did last night. He would have been wasted there.

Don't think Adams will be available til Round 3.

Moore in defence is good but he isn’t needed with Langdon and Howe also being great interceptors. He’d be more useful up forward as Cox is our only tall up there and he’s average.

Lot of focus after the GF on the under-sized Pies' defence against Eagles. Due to KPD injuries, Pies were not tall or big enough against Kennedy, Darling and Vardy. It didn't help that Howe was going at 85% rat power that game. Something that has been overlooked a bit. Howe plays tall but didn't quite have his usual leap that day. The balance was not that far off though bearing in mind it worked pretty well for us in the other three finals (Eagles won QF but KPFs did not get a hold). Moore at 203cm is now back there and looking superb. But reckon we over-compensated last night with an over-sized defence. Rather see Goldsack in defence against Tigers instead of Roughhead. Moore on Jack R. Quite OK with Goldsack on Tom 'Lunch' who looks to me like he's barely going. Goldsack won't run it out of defence but he will lay plenty of tackles and has some pace. Roughhead does not offer either. Not saying Roughead was poor last night but just don't think we had the right balance in defence. Tigers have a small fast fwd line. Happy to see Roughhead back against Eagles in R3.

One issue though; Goldsack has been training/playing forward this pre-season and not in defense. Even in JLT.

True enough. Suppose though he’s used to being thrown around position-wise. Alternative is to play Howe and Moore on Lynch and Riewoldt. I don’t see Lynch as a huge overhead marking threat at least not just yet...

Loves the Incredible Hulk.

If Sier comes in he will struggle to see 40% game time, was struggling in the vfl practice match, Quaynor also still a long way off, needs time to get used to jump in pace from under 18s
Why is this guy struggling? A 'bit of a niggle' hardly accounts for an appalling lack of fitness at the start of a season. We built this guy up as a certain starter in the 22 and a substantial presence at clearances, but look at him now! Struggling in a VFL practice game. What is wrong with this guy?

He’s not fit. Working on his work ethic.
