Changes besides being a great Bowie song should only occur to make the side better.

Also who comes in must be better than who goes out obviously.

Straight away let’s look at who of the 22 is vulnerable?

Brown is the obvious.

Probably all the others are safer than Brown (as it stands today).

Ofcourse a few played with multiple errors but that seemed an infectious disease on Friday.

Now to step back and say which players just won’t be dropped (in panic) because they have credits in the bank.
Phillips, Mayne, Howe, just not going to happen in my view.

Yes team balance could cause a demotion but Varcoe, Aish, Thomas, Mihocek are likely safe enough.

This means there better be a compelling reason to oust someone.

Brown for Greenwood seems the logical step.

Caveat: I don’t buy that you just must have compelling VFL form to get the nod.
That’s why a player like Sier or Greenwood or Goldsack might be considered anyway if it’s felt their inclusion would boost the seniors even if their VFL form was just ok.
I know a big strong Sier playing yields 15 plus possessions that surely would damage the opposition more than the fledgling Brown.

I think we’ll bring in some real grunt for Brown, with Greenwood ahead of Sier.

(If it was my call, I’d play Sier because he’s the future and has outstanding vision and drive through traffic.)

According to Boyd Appleby had a good game in the practice match today. He should come in for Maynard. He needs to take his footy more seriously. Was too lose on danger at times and his rebound was poor. Not on his own, but I would make an example. I think we need to make sure that these kids don’t think they get an automatic start. Stepho in that category as well.

Otherwise Maynard will be one of the next ones to pull the ‘mental health’ too much partying card’

I wouldn't drop Varcoe, he made position a number of times and was ignored. Especially when we kicked out after a point. Was on his own a number of times in the centre, flapping his arms and they kicked short.

I don't think we used the space in kick outs very well at all.

Varcoe is no good.. goes where ball ain't.. low possessions, lacks real physicality.

Next week. 26 degrees. It’s going to be exactly the same which plays into Richmond’s hands. All we do is fumble and they scrap like savages.

If the mids don’t put up a fight, that’s almost the season done.
Our missing link is a big marking fwd. Cox is a threat but is rotated heavily around the ground leaving mihocek as the sole 'tall'.

The worst stat was 37 metres gained for Varcoe. Even Josh Thomas had more and he barely left the fwd 50. Did absolutely nothing other than chase Geelong players around all day. No influence. Surely daicos or Greenwood would have at least won more of the ball.

Cal Brown looked a great prospect in his first games, though his lack of size was apparent. Now he seems to have lost even those early performance skills and attributes. As you say, he offers little more than romance and nostalgia.

Decent rove and snap?

You always like to dig at him, never miss.
If we were as efficient as your Sier pokes, we’d have won by 7 goals last night.

To be fair, I was disappointed to hear he may be unfit and I do find it difficult to understand why he would not be as fit as some others his age.

I thought we looked unbalanced. Need a genuine inside mid and a running defender to help Crisp and the mids transition the footy. I like Howe as a tall defender, so I'd drop Roughhead for team balance (don't think he did much wrong). Sier into the guts and shift Beams, Pendles or Sidey to half back.

I don't think it'll happen though.

I thought Aish was solid in contests, but I'd be giving him a warning - start attempting to offer some run or you're back to the VFL.

I've been living overseas for some time so I wasn't able to seen what's was going on during pre-season. Can someone tell me what's going on with Sier other than a recent injury? Last year it appeared as though he was in the best 22 without question but now is struggling to break in.

I'm happy for anyone who can catch a basic handpass to come in.

I'd be happy for anyone who can execute a basic bandpass to come in.

p.s. a basic bandpass does not involve directing the ball towards the recipient's feet...

I've also been thinking that Roughead might be a reasonable change this week, not on form but because I'm unsure how he will match up against Richmond. Not sure who drops back to defence (Pendles is preferred), but no change will save us if our defence is anywhere near as static as it was on Friday night.

Brown and Varcoe were our worst, with a long way to next worst.

Brown ain't good enough in my view. He's a deer in the headlights when in space and seems to lack footy craft. For one so lightweight, he's not good enough at anything in particular to make it. Daicos is far more promising.

Varcoe is in the worst 5 in the team nearly every week. Runs to the wrong spots and doesn't get it enough.

I'm thinking Brown out, Sier in. I'd like to get Varcoe out too but not sure who for. Maybe Greenwood.

How does Roughy not have a match up? Has to play on Tom Lynch doesnt he? Moore goes to Riewoldt

Not sure the suggestion is that Roughead doesn't have a possible match up, more a question of which match up works best. You think he'll go okay on Lynch, that's fair enough.
