What about the multiple defensive chases he put on that pressured the tigers often resulting in poor kicks.

Varcoe isnt a high stat player but he does impact the game outside of that, but yes needs to get involved more with the ball/play on top of his pressure game.
This is what people miss or don’t understand. Modern game plans are an amalgam of many pieces. In a lot of set situations his role will have nothing to do with getting the ball. He brings pressure and helps others. Hasn’t been his best two games but as you point out his role is much
more that possession rate

He is not immune to losing his spot but it’s much safer that many assume. His internal rating would be much higher as he is doing a lot of stuff only the team really understands.

So how do you know that? He might just as easily be breaking some secret team plans?

Maybe you don’t realise you created a paradox. You wrote that people don’t understand the assigned roles that players might have. And then you have confidence that Varcoe is fulfilling his role.

Are you under the influence?

Varcoe would be the one I'd be omitting for Adams come round 4 based on present form and his output across the entire 2018 season.

I'd rank all of de Goey, Elliott, Hoskin-Elliott, Stephenson, Thomas, Mihocek and Cox ahead of him in terms of consistency and ability to impact the result of a match.

Adams and Greenwood are both capable of rotating between the roles of inside midfielder and pressure forward.

Reckon Thomas goes out before Varcoe.

Varcoe lowest on the entire ground for metres gained for his team for 2 weeks in a row... But of course not a single person even questions Varcoe because he laid... 3 tackles.

Must be amazing to get a ride this free.

He was the hardest at ball for us and caused turnovers- reckons he’s fine.

Possession isn’t everything you know.

Lol , Aish was good , some of you guys just need someone to knock it’s ridiculous.

No change. WHE for Varcoe would be it if he was available.

For Some Posters Aish has come there whipping Boy.

We could win the GF by 100+ Points and Some fans still call him a Dud

Reckon Thomas goes out before Varcoe.

I wouldn't be dropping a player at round 4 who's coming off a career best season in which he kicked 38 goals for a player in his twilight years who kicked 13 (both averaged 3 tackles in 2018 also).

We made the GF last season in large part on the back of de Goey, Hoskin-Elliott and Thomas having break out seasons alongside valuable contributions from first year players Stephenson and Mihocek. Cox provided the occasional standout cameo.

Varcoe's performance paled in comparison and with the side finally winning his lack of output was largely ignored and importantly could be covered.

To his credit he finished the year somewhat better than he started thanks mainly to a consistent contribution on the scoreboard but 3 goals in his first 12 games and with none for 6 straight weeks he and the side was fortunate the above named players shone.

Have you watched the replay? I think Varcoe does a lot of work off the ball and stuff that goes unnoticed it isn't always about goals kicked, we don't know what role he is expected to play.

However given that we have a number of choices when WHE, Adams and Sier are up to form and available, it may mean selection might be based on who we are playing. Or even later on resting players.

Anyway, time will tell.

Given Greenwood wasn't selected last week I guess you'd have to add him to the 3 names above.

My memory is that Adams has a history of taking a while to find his best form when returning from an extended time out though I agree he'll come straight in.

Hoskin-Elliott is comfortably best 22 when fit but he may need a run in the VFL first.

When did Varcoe create turnovers? People keep trotting out this line but i watched him all game and dont think he created a single turnover.. he hasnt gotten a free kick for his tackling this season either, but he has given one away.

I'd be dropping Aish and Greenwood for Adams and Hoskin Elliott, but really, given our luck are we really likely to have a full strength team?
In my team Mayne, Varcoe, Adams or Hoskin Elliot would have to play back at times.
Mayne, Phillips and Josh Thomas need to keep playing well or they will find themselves on the chopping block. Mayne was very good last night, but our slow style of play suited him. If we wanna go quick, he is often a liability.
We really are fortunate that Langdon, Crisp and Howe can play taller and smaller.

Varcoe with 5 touches and zero impact again, not sure we can continue to carry him against West Coast.
His impact was being part of the team that won by 44 points. He contributes in ways the stat sheet may not capture, pressure. He stays for me, you don’t flirt with winning form.

Just because someone was on a winning team does not mean they contributed in an overall positive manner to the team, lots of players contribute at a net loss considering their opponents have impacts too. I bet Varcoes opponent did more than 5 touches 3 tackles in a game.

I'm not bagging him but can someone tell me what Aish's role is? I've only seen bits and pieces of last week and tonight's games so haven't been able to figure it out. Is he like a defensive mid? Wing?
I don't think he's a bad player but I think there are others who can do his role better.

He's playing as a high half back.

Aish out for Appleby. The amount of leeway Aish gets around here for absolute mediocrity is insane. If Mayne played like Aish he'd get ran out of the club with pitchforks

Aish wasn't our most influential on the night but he wasn't bad either. He had 23 disposals across half back and was a useful link in the chain.

three players that had average games are Varcoe, Phillips, Aish. Stats will lie because of our inflated possession count.
WHE and Adams are likely replacements for Varcoe and Aish but no like for like replacement for Phillips. He doesn’t strike me as a traditional footballer, more an athlete who is haphazard with his kicking and decision making. Like Aish though we have to remember they are still relatively young. I don’t think Grundy, Thomas or Stephenson had much of an impact either but hey we won by 44 points against a good side.

WHE could be an option off a wing when he returns. He offers something different in terms of pace, height and footskills than our current mix. Although I think the coaches value work rate over class in our wingers.
