Would much rather Quaynor be developed over Aish in that role. Aish has among the worst disposal in the team and poor decision making under pressure.

Maybe I need to rewatch the game because that wasn't my recollection of Aish's performance. He had that one out of bounds but I thought was pretty clean outside that. I reckon he is doing enough and should only be pushed out if a half back really demands it in the VFL.

Appleby would be the more likely option to me as I understand his VFL form has been good and he has proven AFL performances. Quaynors time will come and I hope we are patient with him. No need to rush him in especially when his JLT minutes suggest he's still adjusting to AFL pace.

Have you watched the replay? I think Varcoe does a lot of work off the ball and stuff that goes unnoticed it isn't always about goals kicked, we don't know what role he is expected to play.

However given that we have a number of choices when WHE, Adams and Sier are up to form and available, it may mean selection might be based on who we are playing. Or even later on resting players.

Anyway, time will tell.
We say we don’t know the role he’s supposed to play but I reckon it’s quite obvious. It to put on defensive pressure and to runs hard, make space for others in offence and take the most of his opportunities.

Think it may be more in various set plays etc his role won’t be to get the ball rather to perform other roles. We don’t know the specifics but within the team he is likely doing that to a high level and being valued internally accordingly. I suspect he is pretty safe for that sort of reason currently.

- Adams won’t be ready for the Eagles match so whoever spuds it up the most out of the fringe players will likely make way for him vs the dogs.
- WHE is not back for a month, likely going to be a forced changed creating a spot for him along the way.
- Quaynor is not ready yet, Aish has been bland but much prefer him than Quaynor/Appleby/Murphy at this stage
- Sier... miss his large presence

It's pretty obvious Varcoe often sits 15-20m off a contest and targets the first outside receiver. It's very disruptive to the opposition and at times demoralising. When Varcoe pounces it's often after others have scrapped hard to clear the ball for their team. They think they're free then Varcoe materialises out of thin air and crunches the receiver. If he doesn't crunch them he places enough pressure to harry the disposal. I reckon he's critical to our forward balance with his pressure and stats be damned.

After reading this thread, I am thinking, given the availability of so many quality players, how fortunate we are to be splitting hairs over team selection. Aish's spot looks assured, whereas Thomas is under pressure and Varcoe's value is being questioned. Meanwhile we don't have to consider 2nd string players as contenders except perhaps for one week for Cox. We are in a more fortunate mindset than in season's past, though a couple of injury riddled games could alter our outlook. Hopefully we'll be spoiled for choice for some time yet.

Aish did a few more iffy things . I still got the feeling that he only plays in that position as we had no one else last year for that slot. I rather have Phillips out and play Aish up fwd.

Varcoe lowest on the entire ground for metres gained for his team for 2 weeks in a row... But of course not a single person even questions Varcoe because he laid... 3 tackles.

Must be amazing to get a ride this free.

He has a team first attitude and his defensive pressure and attack on the ball is invaluable, also opens up space for our forwards because he is a very unselfish footballer

IQ is being developed in that role. In the VFL. When he's senior ready he'll put pressure on those in the team to hold their spots. Might debut this year, might not. Time (and injuries) will tell.

If I remember correctly Philips disposal efficiency was pretty good last year as he worked on it a lot during the year. The first couple of rounds he has butchered it at times but I'd expect it to only get better as the season progresses. He wont be dropped any time soon.

If that's his plan then it's really confusing how he averages less than a tackle per quarter !

Appleby making way for anyone in our backline astounds me.. his performance in the Brisbane game at the Gabba or wherever the f it was.. was like what the.. he is as vanilla a player as they come.

This on and off love of Langdon astounds me as well. The bloke is a gun. His turnovers are no different to any other players. Simply compounded because of his lack luster appearance.

Players who give the impression that they lack vitality are targeted more than most. No different to lanky types as well. Somewhat diminishes how good they really are. Human nature re.

Splitting hairs over selection, I'm just happy some of the posters here aren't on match committee because the rage changes would be endless!

Aish, Varcoe and Phillips all locked in for mine currently and not sure why some fans continue to push for changes week on week in these spots?

Quaynor has time to develop and learn.
Based on his exposed practice games his disposal makes Aish look like Wells disposal.

Quaynor’s time will come but it’s not now.

The only change I'd consider is keeping Pendles and Sidebottom out of the center bounces. The new rule favours quick hacks forward and ferocity and pace at the ball. Neither of those two are particularly strong in that area.

Start Sidey on the wing, as the new rule is perfect for him in that regard. His running power will be an awesome asset.

Start Pendles at half back, or forward. His disposal and 1 on 1 ability will be better suited there until the ball moves out if the starting 6,6,6 formation.

Given our midfield depth we can accommodate such thinking. A combo of Beams, Treloar, Adams, Sier or De Goey would be better in the square. Chuck Grundy in the mix and we'll never lose a center clearance again.

Quick hacks forward are the exact reason why we were so bad in 2014-17!

How good is it having the opportunity to let Quaynor develop until he's ready, instead of rushing him in and ruining him like some other clubs would!

Absolutely correct.

He really looks a talent.

If anything he had a feeler ng of the tempo of the higher level in the practice match.

Let him learn and develop.

Tyler Brown another in this group.

If it were up to me, I'd be dropping Phillips for Sier. Phillips is like a physically weaker, less skilled Sidebottom. There's no need for him to be in the team. At all.

Most likely though we won't be making any changes.

Right now Sidebottom is playing like a physically weaker, less skilled Phillips.

Just sayin'...
