Varcoe and Aish are important for our structure, despite what the stats say. I can see the arguement for appleby to replace aish, but we run the risk of having too many chiefs and not enough Indians in our backline. Just build the chemistry.

Stephenson didn’t have his best game.
He seems to lack the same impact he had last year.

I would love to see him play deep forward, and outrun any defender back to goal.

He gets a little bit lost when he plays higher up the ground.

Think he had a better game than last week - (none of our boys had much impact last week) - so let's not be too harsh on him after a couple of games. He'll get back in the groove as the team's system gels more each week

Agree that his game this week was better than last week. However, I prefer it when he plays deep forward anyways.

I’m always reminded of the Adelaide game.

three players that had average games are Varcoe, Phillips, Aish. Stats will lie because of our inflated possession count.
WHE and Adams are likely replacements for Varcoe and Aish but no like for like replacement for Phillips. He doesn’t strike me as a traditional footballer, more an athlete who is haphazard with his kicking and decision making. Like Aish though we have to remember they are still relatively young. I don’t think Grundy, Thomas or Stephenson had much of an impact either but hey we won by 44 points against a good side.

Really started to work his way into the game in the second half.

Much better half by him, quite pleasing.

Heard DeGoey will be rested - managing his load plus he's rostered on at the Salvos...
Have no problem if he is rested TODAY

:p

Varcoe was ok, creates a lot of pressure chasing and in loose ball contests, although he may not get many stats. Until WHE or someone else deserves it more than him, he will stay.

Aish was good too. Yes there was a couple of clangers and turnovers, but no side will play perfect footy.

No change for me too.

Huh?

I’d argue Grundy was best on ground.

Varcoe with 5 touches and zero impact again, not sure we can continue to carry him against West Coast.
I don't necessarily disagree with you though it is probably worth considering team balance. You need people like Varcoe for their leg speed. If only to match up on the opposition speedsters but then also to bring the crucial element of pressure which is a key part of the pies style. Sure, he was quiet. However, I don't see how you could drop him given the overall team performance was strong and he was a member of the team.

Just as an aside, I do see some sharpness lacking in Stephenson's skills. Not saying he should be dropped but certainly an area he would want to correct sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I could picture him being the change when Tay is available (not a direct swap in positions but a shuffle with Stephenson losing his spot).

Varcoe poor last 2 weeks.
His pressure against Geelong was always a second too late and ineffectual.
Mr Invisable last night.
Will survive until WHE is ready OR he plays like his last 5 games last year.

You don't change that side unless there are injuries. Aish was good last night and Stevo is adapting to the new look forward line (as is JT) because Billy is back and playing Stevo's role out of the GS. His mark and goal in the last and his kick to Mihocek in the third were small reminders of why Stevo is in our side. He is a special talent.

Last night he kicked 2 goals and had 17 touches. From a small forward that is elite. Stevo is going nowhere.

He does a lot without touching the ball though. Given we have enough guys who can impact with ball in hand, I'm happy to have someone who can impact games without the ball. He is amazing at using his body to stop the opposition when they have the ball. Just seems to always be flying and either hits the ball or opponents with speed and individually stops a passage of play.

I'd be happy to keep in him in the side if he replicates last nights' performance

His working off the ball looks solid.

In the second half, he really worked his way into the game.
Was a strong second half.
I think he’s going well, but was so pleased for his second half, a bit like he was last season, a will of the wisp.

And Bonus Time?
Just when defenders have thoughts that De Goey and Cox and Elliott are covered then they’ll have to start worrying that Stephenson is lurking.... he’s such a bonus and knows the goals very well.
He’s a beauty.

Chuck in, Hoskin-Elliott...

17 touches, 2 goals and 3 assists isn’t impactful? He was all over it in the second half!
