If it were up to me, I'd be dropping Phillips for Sier. Phillips is like a physically weaker, less skilled Sidebottom. There's no need for him to be in the team. At all.

Most likely though we won't be making any changes.

I'm just about Phillip's biggest critic on this board and when he kicked that early pass OOF I thought here we go again BUT overall this week was a big improvement on last week. He even took an overhead contested mark. Overall, his ball use was much better and he nailed his scoring opportunity. If he wasn't dropped after last weeks game, he's certainly not getting dropped after last night's effort.

I don't necessarily disagree with you though it is probably worth considering team balance. You need people like Varcoe for their leg speed. If only to match up on the opposition speedsters but then also to bring the crucial element of pressure which is a key part of the pies style. Sure, he was quiet. However, I don't see how you could drop him given the overall team performance was strong and he was a member of the team.

Just as an aside, I do see some sharpness lacking in Stephenson's skills. Not saying he should be dropped but certainly an area he would want to correct sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I could picture him being the change when Tay is available (not a direct swap in positions but a shuffle with Stephenson losing his spot).

Interrupted preseason. He'll improve with more game time.

Yea but Varcoe tackles really "roughly"... which excuses his 2 touches and 1 tackle to half time... Didn't you know that...
I don't think his tackle count included the lovely little number he did on Brandon Ellis (IIRC) as the ball went out of bounds in the last quarter. Whilst not quite at Byron Pickett levels, his pressure around the ball would have the opposition somewhat aware of his presence.

Varcoe does a lot off the ball and provides some serious physical pressure and speed which we lack. A number of times he made sure he crunched the tigers ball carrier after they released it. He was a large reason the Tigers turned the ball over with poor disposal. I'm not sure we have a replacement for him just yet.

Stevo on the other hand jumps at shadows. Maybe it's his size but to me he isn't a natural ball winner. Looked lost up the field. Does his best work closer to the goals but unfortunately we have Elliott and Degoey locked up forward. Not sure we can carry him around the ground waiting for him to rotate up forward.

Stevo will be on notice when WHE returns.

Yeah, there always seems to be a focus on players when they have the footy while completely dismissing what players do when they don't have it. Varcoe's work rate is second to none and pressure and intensity off-sets the lack of it in several team mates. Ideally, he'd be getting a lot more footy himself and hitting the scoreboard but it's the chemistry that's important. If there's a player who can get the footy, hit the scoreboard AND offer what Varcoe does then he'd be at risk.

three players that had average games are Varcoe, Phillips, Aish. Stats will lie because of our inflated possession count.
WHE and Adams are likely replacements for Varcoe and Aish but no like for like replacement for Phillips. He doesn’t strike me as a traditional footballer, more an athlete who is haphazard with his kicking and decision making. Like Aish though we have to remember they are still relatively young. I don’t think Grundy, Thomas or Stephenson had much of an impact either but hey we won by 44 points against a good side.

Phillips was clean as a whistle last night (21 effective disposals out of 25), laid 3 tackles inside forward 50, was our 4th best for metres gained and had 8 score involvements. It’s very hard to stand out in a performance like that but I thought he was very quietly one our best.

Varcoe with 5 touches and zero impact again, not sure we can continue to carry him against West Coast.

What about the multiple defensive chases he put on that pressured the tigers often resulting in poor kicks.

Varcoe isnt a high stat player but he does impact the game outside of that, but yes needs to get involved more with the ball/play on top of his pressure game.

No changes. You don't mess with a team that won that well. It'll be interesting to see who goes out for WHE and Adams when they come back though.Obviously someone will have to make way for them, but i'm not sure who it should be at the moment.

17 touches, 2 goals and 3 assists isn’t impactful? He was all over it in the second half!

If he continues to play high half forward. He'll lead the league in goal assists. He'll break lines and create numerous over the top goals for the likes of Elliott, Degoey, WHE and Mihocek (who reads it so well and just takes off forward when things are opening up)

Its gonna be very difficult. If only you were allowed more players on the interchange bench lol

I found Varcoe very dependable when the ball came the other way. Doesn't get a lot of it but every single time disposes of the ball efficiently and to our advantage one way or another.
Dependable. He'll rip it up against the Weagles.
He played well both times against west coast in the finals as well so I’d probably back him to improve.
