Has he made that statement recently? Or at the time he joined the club? I can understand the delusion at the time ... He's been a lot worse than I thought he'd be ... but recently, thats laughable.

Always made me laugh that last year they were too soft and inconsistent against the better teams (sounds familiar) so to combat that they brought in Watts and Motlop, two players whose only consistency in their game is how inconsistent they are.

I'm not actually trying to say Garlett isn't any of those things, just that Hannan isn't the team player of constant pressure acts he's being made out to be. We might get a spike in performance and effort from him today but he doesn't do it consistently.
Yeah Hannan should be dropped every other week, is a first week back specialist IIRC

Yet one particular Port fan seems to think he will help them into the 8 and beyond, it baffles me. You want to win a flag and you pick Watts and Motlop? You’d be better off getting Todd Viney and Andrew Leoncelli out of retirement.
Had a yarn to the great man last week, still loves the dees.

Also ran into Clint bartram and Matt Whelan.

Amazing, even as ex players most are still emotionally attached to the dees, almost like a beaten dog.

Port’s problem is their leaders are inconsistent - I can see why they thought adding Watts and Motlop would help... but when Wines, Boak, Westhoff, Ebert, Rockliff don’t consistently stand up when the pressure is on those two aren’t carrying you.

And Ports defenders are bush league, seriously horrible footballers down back for them
The issue is Ebert is cooked, boak is slower than lewis with lesser foot skills (par at falling over) westhoff has made a career out of not being physical, rockliff is either injured, or cooked x2. Jonas is their most important player, he is a good defender, a leader and not only intercepts well, but uses it well too.

They have all sorts of issues with their list profile. They went all in to win a flag this year, and as such, the list has the following age profile at start of next year:
Boak-30
Ryder- 31
Braodbent- 29
Hartlett-28
Motlop-28
Ebert-29
R. Gray- 31
Rockliff- 29
Dixon- 28
Pittard- 28
Westhoff- 32
Thomas- 31

Even the "young" players like wingard, jonas, S. Gray and polec will all be around 25 starting next year. Wines aside, they dont have many young players coming through.

Almost?

He's never been that good. I've said it a few times, but you know how people say "If X WA based player played in Victoria he'd be spoken about as one of the greats" etc ... It's the opposite for Rockliff, because he was up here in QLD, people just looked at his stats and thought he must be a gun and doing it solo in a poor team ... where as he was really just an average player who knew where to be to get a lot of the ball as the Lions chipped it about, and never did much with it either. Like Watts and Motlop, there was a reason their original clubs were perfectly happy to see them go.

You make a decent point, and I like the comparison. But Rockliff has played plenty of good games in his time at Brisbane. His 2014 season in a pretty ordinary side was fantastic. Hes never been silk, he will never be smooth and he was never fast. But he was a player who put his head over the ball and had a proper crack. Which is why my point about him this year was raised- why so ordinary?

Thats my point tho, were they good games? Or did they look good on the stats sheet, and comparative to his team mates, and in actual fact were workman like performances from an honest trier ... because from my vantage point, which was often live, it was the latter? Which explains why, when in a better team and under more of a spotlight, he now looks ordinary, because he was always pretty close to that.

Fair enough, and games live vs on TV always paint a different pic I guess too.

From what I've seen, I remember him playing some very good afl football. 2015 he was Injured a lot, 2016 he played more forward minutes and similar last year. Fagan may have seen that and decided to play him outside his preferred position (similar to roos and frawley) knowing that he wasnt what the future looked like, which backs up your argument.

It's a good discussion, and it shows how fast the end can come for those toiling, one paced contested players similar to him, boak and possibly even our own captain. If they never had any x factor in terms of pace, skills or marking etc, as soon as they lose that yard of pace, they end up looking very ordinary.
