I think its more about keeping us in the contest for longer mate - we need to take some steps to improve, and continuing to go down by 100 each week is not going to help.

Thats why Roos has been so adamant that he'll be using our percentage as the yardstick this year - not number of wins.

If we actually show signs of improvement by keeping the ball in our possession, scores low, and smaller losses - we should start pinching a few more wins.. and after we start pinching a few more wins - we can start to think about our win/loss ratio as the yardstick.

We have to accept just how shit we were last year, and have been for so long - and realise that we aint going to instantly turn into a winning side.
Trying to stay in the contest is fine, but playing games with the intent just to not lose by a lot as opposed to actually trying to win is not the way to go about it.

Paul Roos isnt stupid either though mate, he will know that 6 goals wont win you any games and slow ball movement wont win you much either, We would not have followed the game plan how he wanted against StKilda but if we are consistent with the objective and goal and we keep letting Vince Tyson Watts Toumpas and co get there hands on the footy the results will come sooner or later

Both aren't super strong though, for example - they'd be smashed by your forward line :p
You're underrating Mackenzie there (and yes, I know it was tongue in cheek :p), he was manhandling our forwards at training.

Its just trying to keep us in the contest so we are actually a chance in the last quarter - its not going out there purely to minimise losses.

I thought Roos and Bomber Thompson made good points on AFL 360 last night about controlling the tempo of play. If you go full throttle the entire game, you'll be stuffed at some point, and open yourself up to a run-on from the opposition (especially if you are a weaker side).

But if you can slow play down by keeping possession when you're under the pump from the opposition, you can take away some of their momentum, keep yourself closer on the scoreboard, and its also a good chance for your guys to 'catch their breath' somewhat - before attempting to exert your own series of forward thrusts.

Going to throw this out there, although it doesn't really hold all that much purpose to say. But as a person that's going to the game this weekend, I'm actually really worried. I didn't feel it after the bulldogs game last week, because I felt as though any team could've gone up there against them, and would've probably lost. But it's scary now the more I think about all those horrible defeats I've been there to witness. I'd really like to be up and excited this weekend, but it's proving quite difficult. Our lack of talls, especially in the forward line, versus their tallest timber by comparison, is really concerning. I'd like to think we could actually win this game. And I don't want to rule out the possibility. But it's really hard to see this ending well, unless we truly do fire on all cylinders. Can't be kicking points this weekend, either. :(

Realistically we should get pumped and I expect as much. There is a slim chance that West Coast turn up thinking about taking it easy and we absolutely play out of skin. Maybe then it will be close. Don't quote me and tell me I'm a defeatist/typical Melbourne supporter. It's all about having realistic expectations. That mentality has come down from Jackson and Roos.

As long as Bernie bombs a couple from the 50 and Watts plays like he did, tyson shows some skill around the contest and toumpas plays well again ill be reasonably happy, its that we didnt improve at all in the 2 years Neeld had us that was the worst part

The only two games in Victoria that I didn't attend last year were the two that we won. So I probably shouldn't go to the game this Sunday, but my self-loathing means I'll be there, as always.

Just want a solid and resilient 4 quarter effort.

Don't ever go to a melbourne game again thanks.

It's like putting on a comfortable pair of well-worn moccasins.

Comfy, underdog moccasins.

I'm ****ing sick of these moccasins.

I hate to say it, but I don't think there's much to this game beyond a fervent hope that both teams walk off the field with the same injury list that they had when they walked onto it.
