Riewoldt is not half as good as the duck. Imagine how many frees Duck would get under todays soft atrocious umpiring rules? Duck destroyed teams whilst being held by three blokes at a time. Duck never played for a free as the umpires gave him nothing.

Outs : CJ ( never to play again), Gav Urq. ( scared sh##less), Ross ( soft), Adams ( too slow)

Ins: Pratt ( it is now or never), Smith and or Tarrant, the Cunster( at least he is a nasty bugger), Harding

That's not bad, but I would bring in McMahon, and perhaps give Sam Wright a break. Also, don't know if I'd drop Patch, just play him as in and under against West Coast.

I know this goes against the grain, but I would drop one of the giants. Personal preference, but we just don't win when we have the three in. Not saying any one of them performed poorly or deserves to go, just don't like our side with that mix.

Also, I prefer not to bag individual players. Rather the selections, and how they are played. No player went out there to play the way we did, and some looked like they were trying too hard to make something happen, which made us play even more like a group of individuals.

We MUST bring in a second forward marking option to take pressure of Hale and the midfield.

Yep, we have absolutely no link from defence to deep forward.

Warren is playing a deeper role, fair enough, Hale is playing out of the goal square.

Our go-to men across half forward are Lindsay Thomas, Matt Campbell, Corey Jones, Leigh Adams and Ben Ross ffs.

I'd much rather pump games into Tarrant than Josh Smith and Aaron Edwards, whom to be brutaly frank, neither will be on the list within 2-3 years imo.

At least with someone of Tarrants size, he can draw a big bodied defender, and bring the ball to ground, enabling Thomas and Campbell to feed off someone.

At the moment we are trying to spot up Corey Jones, bless his soul, who loses his feet more often than a hooker. He's the most useless player I think I've ever seen when the ball hits the deck, for a forward of his size.

That means Warren and Hale are pushing further up the ground, and opposition teams have loose men in our attacking 50, and are able to run it out like a cakewalk.

Tarrant has to play next week, if only to provide a consistent target to kick to, that is over 6"2.

Great explanation.

Yes, Tazza for mine on the options I have watched so far this season.

The absence of Petrie has a serious flow on effect for our young midfield as well, as it gives them no long get out option when they run in to trouble. The opposition simply park someone 30 metres in front of Hale and the mids have no choice but to maintain possession of the footy which puts them under even more pressure, ad infinitum.

Toughness is not the issue at all. Have a look at our midfield, its full of one paced plodders. I love Ziebell, but he isn't going to burst away from a pack anytime soon, more likely to bust through it. Swallow good extractor, but no pace. Bastinac 2nd gamer can't expect him to set the world on fire yet. Wells is lost and Boomer isn't hardly playing in the midfield. Anthony is a ball magnet, but by no means quick.

I think we need to inject Harding into that midfield to get some pace to release the ball to. At the moment we have all these in and under players and no one to feed it to.

Urquhart should be played in the centre square.

Agreed. I'd be looking at either Josh Smith or Edwards as I think Tarrant's development requires a little more time in the VFL. I'd go for Smith as I feel that Edwards tends to play well in winning teams and is only successful within the 40 m arc. We need someone to complement Hale.

Additionally the mid field must be instructed and go for the best option so as not to allow the opposition to simply go 2 on 1 against Hale.

The midfield need to be encouraged to just kick the bloody thing so the opposition don't have 10 minutes to flood back in numbers.

It's no coincidence that the only time we looked anywhere near dangerous last night is when we went long in to the forward line.

If Thomas and Campbell can't even get to the feet of Hale, what difference is it going to make bringing Tarrant in and doing the same thing. He's not going to take 10 marks a game and he's going to get beaten in more marking contests than not.

It's just going to be the same result just kicking to a different player.

What needs to happen is that our small forwards need to extract the digit, work harder to get to contests and make more leads. Our midfielders need to lower their eyes a bit instead of just bombing the ball long to Hale in a 1 on 3 situation.

Ins: Harding, Mcmahon, Cunnington, Tarrant, Smith

Harding and Mcmahon - give us run and creative attack form the backline.

Cunnington - some hardness in the midfield

Tarrant and Smith some tall targets to play across the half-forward line.

Like most others I think its time Wright takes his spot at Half forward. He spots-up forwards really well and can take a good grab.

Scott Thompson should be taking the third tall and burning him off, Narnie fullback and Hansen Chb.

Thompson, Grima, Mcmahon
Firrito, Hansen, Harding
Wells, Anthony, Harvey
Smith, Tarrant, Wright
Warren, Hale, Campbell

McIntosh, Ziebell, Swallow

Cunnington, Bastinac, Rawlings, Thomas

I think we need those five ins but I'm not sold on who deserves to miss out.

Thomas and Campbell are having to do the link up work because we basically have one forward option.

We need a another big marking target who can draw the crowd away from Hale and give space for the crumbers to work in. Drew would ideally do that, but he is out, so why not bring in our 197cm first round pick?

In all seriousness...

In - Tarrant, Cunnington, Harding, McMahon
Out - Jones, Ross, Wright, Adams

Tarrant plays as a second tall. Hale is getting swamped at the moment. Wright just needs to go back to the VFL and get his hands on the footy in the midfield. Thompson lucky but he's a much better player than he's showing.

Just from reading in between the lines of the VFL reports it sounds like they will persist with Cunnington in the VFL a bit longer for match fitness.

You make the opposition accountable by forwards making leads and hitting them up as soon as opponents drop off to double team Hale.

As I've said many times already, Tarrant is not up to it yet. From what i have seen of him, he looks completely lost out there. So what if he's kicking goals in VFL practice matches.

If he's in our best 22 right now, WE ARE SCREWED!

What have you seen of him?

The fact that he is kicking goals against VFL opposition means he is ready for a chance. It is a good entry - expectations will be low, he is not expected to be Carey, he can fill time until Drew is back if it doesn't work out and he will be the third forward option after Hale and Warren.

But however raw he is, every opposition team will assign him a big defender who he can drag away from Hale's space.

It makes perfect sense to give it a go.

he looked lost playing in defence. he is a natural forward. He showed in one quarter what he is capable of, and TBH although he only kicked one goal i was pretty impressed with his leading and his ability to find the footy in the forward line.

OUT: Firrito(if Spud misses and Pratt comes in, our sides a shambles and Spud is just not playing well enough to lead our youngsters) Urquhart(is so shit ryt now hes headed down the Thomas/Hale path) Jones(bring him back when we have a decent forward line) Ross Bastinac
IN: McMahon Harding Smith Greenwood Cunnington
B:McMahon (why he was dropped is beyond me- shocking call)
Thompson (second year blues again or what)
Rawlings (his move to defence needs to become justified- playing his role is all we want)
HB: Hansen (he can be our Mackie or Fisher-3rd tall-offer rebound-we wont get more out of him)
Grima (was good for the run- will improve obviously)
Wright (The kid will have learnt and gained much value from his 2 games and i say leave him in over Firrito)
C: Anthony (will dominate next week IMO)
Ziebell ( a special performance is around the corner)
Harding (we need his toughness and run- badly missed against the Saints- one of the few who would of helped out Boomer- makes me sick what happened)
HF: Harvey (will play- but theres 3 tough nuts we needed who would of helped him out Saturday- Lower, Levi and Turtle)
Smith (if Tarrant doesnt debut then give Josh a kick for the next month)
Warren (is or will get the second best defender for the rest of his career- a noted gun)
F: Campbell (his pressure is satisfying but we wanna see goals too)
Hale (hes a 3rd best forward at best, playing as the focal point- with CJ on the decline and no Petrie if he can ever dominate once more then hell get rid of the dud tag hes got)
Thomas (was okay- or was he bad- i dont know with Lindsay but a bag of goals is long overdue- expect 3 minimum from him this week)
R: McIntosh (in form- all his work to help out the mids is goin to shit cause we got no experience and forwards)
Swallow (had a good game on the weekend- is one of the senior blokes now so needs to claim and push on with the general mantle)
Greenwood (WE NEED HIM- badly- so much pressure on him to perform when he comes back- cause hes the tough nut we all love)
I: Goldstein (was good on Satdy too- we know how good hell be)
Wells (the blokes done no preseason- he wont be at his peak for a month at least- its a valid excuse but its just too common with Wellsy)
Adams (like Wright he takes the game on and always has the correct mindset- like Ross also but atleast Patch has a defensive side to his game)
Cunnington (time to debut the champ and leave him in there- let the machine have a run)
E: Bastinac (has had a taste for it but time to give Cunners a run)
Ross (probably squeezed out in that Wright has a better kid and Patch is more developed)
Firrito (I love Spud but a hard thing to say is weve probably seen his best and the potential in our kids overshadows that- not enough strings to his bow in his game)

HB: Hansen (he can be our Mackie or Fisher-3rd tall-offer rebound-we wont get more out of him)

I know of someone (in addition to myself) who disagrees with that....

Bon Scott said:
"Lachie Hansen isn't playing third or fourth defender - he's playing on the best.

These aren't just games into young players; these are our go-to players. We rely on those guys."

And this is where the fault is. Grima Thompson and Hansen. Whos the FB, whos the CHB and whos the 3rd option. For all of 07 and 08 Hansen was the CHF then the CHB to be. Along come Hunter and Narni and Hansen is a rebounding backmen. Then on the weekend Hansen takes Riewoldt. This is Lachies 4th year. In our eyes he can be the perfect option to take Riewoldt and Brown and Roughead. But has he got the physique to beat them. We know hell come good but atm the club, us and probably Lachie too HAVE NO IDEA where his niche is:thumbsdown:

For all of 07 and 08 Hansen was the CHF then the CHB to be.

He's played 31 or so games all up tazaa and it's 2010. Bon's just taken over and he's making sure Lachie's taught/trained in the position he wants him to excell in eventually. Zac Dawson, at Lachie's 31 game stage, was the biggest hack I'd ever seen play AFL.

We know hell come good but atm the club, us and probably Lachie too HAVE NO IDEA where his niche is:thumbsdown:

I don't find anything particularly ambiguous or difficult to understand in Bon's words. And I'm sure an intelligent fellow like Lachie (refer computer use) would agree.

Its all about taking the next step with Hansen. A few times Lachy was ball watching on satdy night. His place is in defence. His role in my view is to take the CHF. As tough as it is for the bloke and as much as its unwarranted, Lachy as pick3 just needs to have a 15 mark 25 possession 100+ DT game against a good oponent to take that next step.
