Great post. Hombsch up forward would be interesting and i know clurey can play forward. Would be nice to take a few risks.

Hombsch was tried up forward in desperation against Carlton and the results were absolutely the opposite of 'interesting'.

Add Max James, Ivan Eckermann, Trevor Sorrell, Roger Delaney, Greg Phillips, David Hynes and Scott Hodges to the list of players John Cahill converted successfully from one position to another. Max James did the double switch from full forward to full back to on baller. Super athlete.

Even Russell Ebert when he first came to Port under Fos played full forward and topped the Magpies goal kicking in 1968.
Ebert at CHB was interesting move by Fos

It was and it was a move Cahill pulled for a while in 1981 after Greg Phillips tore his achilles.

But I read raptalia's OP more about players who changed their career direction than players who might have played a different position for a spell before going back to their usual spot. Ebert as a full forward didn't really fit into that scenario either although he started and finished his league career as a forward (and had spells there during his career, notably as part of Cahill's shifting half forward line of 1981 that was so devastatingly effective). It was everything he did as a centreman that we remember him for.

Haven't we been putting Wingard in the midfield and the forward line over the past year?
Wouldn't mind seeing Impey chucked up forward if we had another small defender on the cards waiting.

It just seems to me we get players on our AFL list, they are pigeon holed into a position, that is where they play at SANFL level and they are never tried anywhere else. If they do not make it that is it.......

Id say the exact opposite under Choco and Primus.
Pettigrew a natural forward and stuffed around put in the backlines
Salter a natural forward and stuffed around put in the backlines
Salopek a natural midfielder and attempted to be turned into a seagull HBFer injury prevented a successful stuffing up
Peter B a natural midfielder and successfully turned into a seagull HBFer
Hartlett a natural midfielder and attempted to be turned into a seagull HBFer
Michael Wilson a natural midfielder should have been played in the guts but was moved to defence because Choco could trust him above lazy others
Brett Ebert a natural midfielder and turned into a reasonably successful small forward but shouldn't have been our dummy KFP lead up forward
Toby played back forward and ruck

Flankers and midfielders are always moved around the flanks and midfield.

When it was on the line tonight Wingard still stood in the forward line going for high marks.

Please don't mention Butchers name, please. Having Jonas' kicking is bad enough. For the love of god stop bringing Butchers name up.

You miss my point. It is not whether these moves worked but the fact that they were tried. Let me give you a couple of examples of pigeon holing in our current list.

Paul Stewart- was pretty good as a defender when he made his début back in 2008. Then he was tried up forward with mixed results. Since then he has invariably been pigeon holed as a forward. On form Matthew Broadbent could be dropped and Stewart given a game in his spot. It is good that they looked at Stewart as a forward but not that he has been pigeon holed as a forward.

Jasper Pittard- the reverse of Paul Stewart, for some reason he is pigeon holed as a defender and not tried up the field. His run, kicking and evasive skills plus the occasional howler make him better suited as a midfielder yet he is never tried there.

I didnt miss your point. You made the big sweeping statement - About the only Power player I can think of who has had some degree of change in direction is Matt Lobbe who was originally recruited as a KPP and gave lots of SANFL examples and ignored other Power players. I gave lots of examples of Power players. If you meant Power players under the Hinkley regime then you have a valid argument.

And Lobbe wasnt recruited to be a KPP. He played both ruck and KPP in the U/18 and he was recorded with that duel purpose as a possible replacement for Lade as FF and Ruck. Lobbe was best and fairest winner as a 17 year old playing for Eastern Ranges in 2006 and playing in the ruck, and in 2007 he was played mainly at CHF by coach Shane Watson. From the 2007 Inside Football where I got the above facts from the coach said "..... He had a really good start and finish to the year, but was a little flat in the middle. He's still growing into his body but he's a really good talent who tested well at the camp." Was 199cm and 82kgs according to Inside Football.

My 'sweeping' statement was in reference to the current Power side. As I also posted there are two issues, one is a permanent career change when a player is successfully played in a different position for the remainder of his career. The other is developing that versatile player who can go forward or back and produce a match winning effort. It is that versatility the current Power side lacks when compared to sides of the past. Last year Westhoff was a player who rotated between defence and attack but this year he has fallen away. I assume that Ryder was recruited to assist in ruck and move forward but that hasn't worked out due to injury and ASADA investigations. Maybe Ryder's inclusion also changed Westhoff's role a bit as Ryder became that extra tall up forward for the first few rounds. At the risk of offending you with another sweeping statement to me the current side has nowhere near the flexibility of our 2004 Premiership side when we had smalls and talls who could impact a game after a move by the Coach. I another thread you passed comment on moving Jasper Pittard up the ground but this probably will not happen because for some reason Jasper is pigeon holed as a defender just as Paul Stewart, who has a record as a defender, is now pigeon holed as a forward. I hope this clarifies my thinking.

:rolleyes:I think the PAFC is pretty good at changing directiono_O,12 months ago we had everything full steam ahead, 2015 we have 'changed direction' 180 and heading backwards............would be funny if it wasn't true:(
