Channel 9 are already already heavily exposed to the NRL rights deal which despite the poor crowds has very successful viewing audience ratings.
AFL - 5 year deal, $1.25 billion agreement
2014 AFL GF: (Edit) 3.51 million viewers
NRL - 5 year deal, $1.025 billion agreement
2014 NRL GF: (Edit) 3.95 million viewers
To have a stronghold on both would potentially be an overload on resources while having one agreement is manageable. That is probably a minor reason compared to more high level issues.
