Chanting in Tennis

What's up with that?

So annoying, bloody hell, you sound like a bunch of hooligans.

Does it even motivate the player that is being cheered? I'd imagine it would be annoying for both players.

Was at the Aus v Pol game at Hopman Cup. Great to see so much Polish support dressed up. Loved the chanting. The cheering on double faults and blatant unforced errors not so much. And as for the calling out just before a player served, which lead to a bunch of them getting kicked out - that was poor form.

Cheer up it adds to the atmosphere :) As long as they stop before the player is about to serve then it isn't really a problem

Got to admit the chanting by the Fanatics at the tennis is pretty lame. I cringe watching an Aussie game on an outside court - they need to consult the barmy army for some decent song lyrics

The fanatics are fair-weather stooges, when the aussie is struggling, they hardly say boo. A great atmosphere at a tennis match really adds something to it. A couple of years ago I sat on Margaret court for a while (got cooked in the process) and saw Duckworth and then Ebden. The atmospehre was fantastic, there were people doing chants (pretty sure they weren't fanatics though) who were quite good.

I remember when Baghdatis (Cyrpus) played some Greek dude (I think) and there were fights in the stands. That would be pretty entertaining I would imagine.

Hooliganism has no place in tennis, nothing entertaining about it.

People having differing opinions truly is absurd.

I don't mind it too much, think it's poor though when the Croats/Serbs/Greeks etc use the tennis to have a go at each other. The Swedes were always my favourites.

When do those Southern Europeans not have a go at each other at a sporting arena. Always keen to bring in their bloody politics into the arena and cause trouble.

Love the Swedes too, the best. The Fanatics have a lot to learn from.

I love the chanting at the tennis!! I think we all need to move away from the mentality that tennis is meant to be a peaceful game without chanting. That was the case years ago but now Tennis fans have evolved. As long as people don't chant or make any sort of noise during points, then it's ok!
Also I hate how people say that we shouldn't cheer double faults or boo at the opposition player! That's sport! Sport's beauty is the fan atmosphere! Booing is part of the atmosphere! I agree that the ethnic hatred has no place in tennis or in any sport!! I was quite embarrassed when the Greek started fighting with the cops a few years ago like a bunch of idiots!

Maybe. It's certainly something I'm not used to. I enjoy the major cheering, but the chanting? Not so much.

And I just think it's unsportsmanlike to boo the other player. It's okay if it's done to teams because it's a team of players, whereas it is much much much more personal if done in tennis.

Some of the chanting is quite good but i cant believe we are still persisting with the Aussie oi oi chant which i am still hearing which is about as pathetic as you can get

Should have retired it at the Sydney Olympics even then it was way over done
