"Former Geelong champion Paul Chapman says the time is right for Patrick Dangerfield to play as a permanent forward.

Despite winning last year’s Brownlow Medal in emphatic fashion playing the role of mainstay in the Cats’ midfield, Chapman believes a switch forward would greatly enhance team balance.

“For the team, and the side’s premiership push, I reckon he’d be better used as a forward,” Chapman said.

“As a permanent, or semi-permanent forward, he’d kick two or three goals a game and end up being a 50-plus goalkicker."

What are your thoughts.

For a team that struggled through the middle in 2015 without a foil for Selwood, then improved dramatically in 2016 when the captain finally received help, I'm not sure that that's the right call. I'd be inclined to go with the 75/25 split. Danger's too valuable in the middle.

My thought would best be summed up thus...

I know this year is going by quickly but I'm shocked to think that it's April 1 already.

And before the cries of 'wait, hear the man out' begin, I cannot conceive of a less likely change to our set-up in '17 than this one. Take one of your singular greatest strengths and dilute it to potentially achieve some better effectiveness closer to goal.

Won't matter much for us when the ball is regularly down the other end or being vigorously contested in the middle of the ground while Danger stands up forward with his arms in the air.

I look forward to Chappy's follow-up on Joel's 'reinvention' as a nullifying back pocket who blankets the opposition's best small forward each week.

I get what he means. It would be better for the team if he played 50/50 forward.
Take pressure of Hawkins and make our forward line very very dangerous.
Almost guaranteed 2+ goals a game.
He bombs it forward more often than not anyway.
Plus it gives us a chance during the season to develop other mids which we really need to do.
It won't happen as I'd say Danger will decide where Danger plays but good call by Chappy.

It would be a luxury move that Geelong cannot afford to make due to its lack of depth in the midfield. In 2015, Selwood was unable to hold up the midfield by himself, and the second best inside mid even during that time, Caddy, is gone now too. If Geelong had the spread of contributors in the midfield that a side like Sydney has, you could absolutely afford to play Dangerfield predominantly forward, and he'd be very dangerous up there.

Geelong can't have Dangerfield spend most of his game time in the forward line. The midfield would suffer too much without his influence. It would probably be a good idea, however, for both Selwood and Dangerfield to have some stints in the forward line and to allow younger players to develop their midfield games. If Geelong loses midfield battles, and games, because of this, then I think that's a reasonable price to pay because the side won't be winning anything so long as Selwood and Dangerfield are the only productive mids in the lineup.

I think the only way to get more depth in the midfield is to play different players in there for longer.
It might fail and we might miss the top 4 but if we're going to have to rely heavily on Dangerwood again in the finals we're just going to bomb out again anyway.

That means he's won the ball, something the majority of our other mids have forgotten how to do.

My thoughts are chappt must have been drinking when he wrote this (assuming it wasnt ghost written for him).

Play the best midfielder in the league as a permanent forward, yikes. Yeah coz that worked so well when we did it with ablett.

True. But we have to find some other mids that can.
Guthrie, Duncan, Blitz, Murdoch, Motlop have proved to be non consistent ball winning inside mids.
Menegola and S.Selwood might be the answer to a degree but there's no real X factor there and average disposal at best.
I really think Cockatoo, Parfitt and Lang need real midfield minutes even if it's at the expense of Danger/ Selwood having to play forward and even it means we lose a few H/A games.
I don't think they'll be enough improvement in the mid group we played in the 16 finals to win the flag.
It has to come from these young players for us to be a chance at the end of the year.

Worked for the next year though when we didn't have him. Gave other players experience on the ball.

not shaw about this

its like a throw away line "stick him forward and he will kick 3 a game"
how many times has this line been used and it never quite happened,, whether they didnt end up playing forward or the fact kicking 3 a game isnt as easy as it seems, hello ben graham

not even hawkins kicks 3 a game these days

he just needs to give the ball off instead of bombing it

i would play him more forward during the season to give others more experience and to keep him fresh
