Yeah but I want to be able to use it in the steam interface. Achievements/friends/in game overlay etc.

EA don't use steamworks anyway, so it was never going to get Steam achievements, and you can still use the overlay/friends list etc. Just "add a non-steam game to your library".

The only things you miss out on are directly being able to join in-game friends from steam itself and steam keeping a record of your playing time. I certainly wouldn't give up 64 players and bigger maps for that.

Blasphemy! Every other DD store sucks.

Bah, Gamer's Gate is great. The best thing is when they sell Steamworks games for half the price of Steam. Get the code from GG, activate it, and you have a Steam game for far less than it would have cost you to buy it on Steam.

I activated my free trial of Minecraft from the humble bundle. I am hooked and have bought the full game. Bye bye to my massive pile of games to start/finish.
I cbf bumping the Minecraft thread to ask.

But what has you hooked? What's so good about it?

I see plenty of vids around that make me think Minecraft would be pretty sweet (kind of like an open world LBP) but then I think my imagination would let me down and I'd just create a little hut and be done with the game.:(

That's what I thought but the survival mode means it's not that easy. To get good minerals you need to mine pretty far down and to do that safely you need to be very careful, have the right supplies and take precautions to make sure you don't get lost. Finding out new recipes (although I do cheat) is half the fun. It's kind of the struggle to get the the things to create what you want (and/or to survive) that's the appeal.

And this is only the single player. Haven't played multiplayer yet. Does anyone know any good servers?

There's just something about, when I first got it, couldn't stop.
I'm abit easier with it now. I've got a little hut (on one map - a huge castle on another), but theres fun in creating traps and mining all the way down to get diamond.
I'm thinking of getting a texture pack to give it a bit of a different feel.

Plus creepers can scare the SHIT out of you

Anyone who enjoys Minecraft may also get into Terraria. It's sort of like a 2d minecraft with more fighting. Very addictive game.

It's the Steam mid-week sale at the moment ($5), but the deal finishes in a couple of hours unfortunately. I got it for $10 when it came out, and weren't disappointed, and the devs have made a heap of updates/improvements since then - one update was released a day or two ago.

IGN gave it a 9/10
Though on the surface it looks like just another "me too" indie game seeking to ride the coattails of Minecraft's success, Terraria expands on the familiar sandbox gameplay with a greater emphasis on combat and adventure that proves very satisfying. Fresh elements – like an absurdly expansive weapon crafting system, a broader scope of monsters to battle, and a slick retro 2D presentation – make it a stand out among the pack. Hell, it took all the resolve I could muster just to shut the game down long enough to write this review. That's rare indeed.

Dammit I would have gotten it....do they have things on sale on the site a lot.

Gamersgate do regularly have sales - often with one game as a daily deal type sale. Not sure how often they have the same game come up on sale, but I know that Civ V was also on sale at the start of July for the same price.

I haven't tried Amazon myself before with digital downloads, but it could be worth giving them a shot - they have it for $16.98 USD at the moment. Even though it is 'US Only', apparently it will work if you add another US address to your account and switch that to the default address when buying a game.

Civ V I've seen on sale at a few different stores over the last few months though. These are a couple of other stores I usually check out, which might be worth keeping an eye on too, if you don't know of them already....

the two gamersgates (uk is often cheaper)
http://www.gamersgate.com/
http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/

maybe also
http://www.direct2drive.com/
although many of their games are restricted to North America only (Civ V being one of those unfortunately).

all those are legit digital stores (ie, not one those backyard cd-key stores).

I find them pretty handy for the Steamworks titles. Green Man if you search for "steam" will even show you which ones require Steam. They often have 20% off coupons, which combined with the sales on pre-orders, can work out pretty cheap - I know some people got Deus Ex HR recently for about $28.

Get Games at the moment have Deus Ex for $35 USD and Football Manager 2011 for $15 USD which both require Steam as far as I know.

I've been keeping an eye on my local Cash Converters. They have some decent prices. Picked up AC:B for $25.

^Anyone looking into buying Mount and Blade, I'd recommend buying Warband and skipping the other two.

That actually sounds really good.... but.... Do you have to download them all at once or can you space it out over say a month or so?

Nope, you can do it whenever you want, and as many times as you want.

Worth getting CoH Gold, which is the original plus Opposing Fronts, for $4. Tales of Valor wasn't good.

Alpha Protocol is a great concept with terrible execution.
