Cheap Ruckman?

The changes that are to be introduced for the interchange bench will have a major bearing on what type of ruckman MFC will need in the future... Can we carry a large big body type interchanging off the bench with little or no time spent up forward, eg Blake?

If Jamar rests up forward at times when (say) Blake comes on for 10 mins each quarter, it may very well save us a few interchanges for the mids to use...

This would be my preference, as I feel getting the ball tapped in our favour at stoppages is critical rather than a biggish player contesting for hitouts without any real chance of succeeding...

Nice post.

Never said to get a crap ruck mate..... just dont need two genui9ne rucks, Jamar has proven he can handle a large workload, Geelong and Hawthorn never had a ruckman as good as Jamar when they won their premierships..... Collingwood have Jolly who is good then a FWD/RUCK in brown.
My point is not to pay BIG for something we dont need, someone like leigh brown would beideal in my opinion

Yeh sorry I was a little terse upon reflection. I agree we don't need to get sandilands or cox, but there is some quality about for cheap..

I've been sitting on an ENTER SPAANDERMAN headline for five years so this would be epic.

Nice haha

'til the Spaanderman he comes'...

Good luck fitting that one on a banner!

Seriously though, he had pretty good game in the WAFL GF. If you get a chance to, check it out on ABC iView. Best WAFL GF for years.

The thing counting against Llane is that he's already been on 2 AFL lists and didn't make either time.

After playing so well this year and getting dropped for the GF, maybe the Dees should have a word with Ben McEvoy from the Saints. He'd be shattered to miss his second in a row.

I know he'd cost a bit if we wanted him, but i'd rather pay a bit more and get a highly promising young ruckman than try to pay less for another c-grade ruckman.....

Great call :thumbsu:

Seriously doubt we could get him though but worth a chat..

I actually know Ben a tiny bit through a friend of a friend and I know he was massively devestated to miss out in last year's GF. God only knows how he'd feel missing two in a row.

It's things like that that can make a previously happy footballer want to leave a club.

So, unlikely as it is, I'd love for us to chat to him.

would love to get Big Ben but there's two promblems. He's contracted and Saints would ask for pick 12 or drag the feet at trade week, not unlike the Luke Ball situation last year.

He was pick 9 in the 2007 draft so we might even consider it?

Yeh similar story to Blake at Geelong - he got dropped for the Collingwood semi and surely he'd be dirty. Not that I want Blake - just saying he is ripe for the picking as well.

James Meiklejohn from Port Adelaide Magpies.

He turns 27 next year, 198cm & 101kg. Is physically developed and could provide some good insurance on the rookie list in the event that Jamar & Spencer were to go down with injuries at the same time as we can't ruck Martin or Newton full time and Fitzpatrick & Gawn aren't ready and I'm hoping PJ wont be there next year.

Meiklejohn averages 5 kicks, 8 handballs, 3 marks, 2 tackles & 25 hitouts a match. Think it wouldn't be a bad idea to look at this guy for insurance for a year or 2 while our young rucks develop. He's captain of Port Magpies also so should have some decent leadership qualities for the young players.

Well Martin should be delisted imo. The only role in which I thought he could be any good as as a key defender. He's not smart enough as a forward and is a terrible set shot goalkicker. At least as a defender he can follow the forward to the ball, but I can't fit him into our defence.

I really hope Gawn comes on!

I'm pretty sure Martin's contracted for 2011 so that wont happen but I know what you mean. Unless he shows strong improvement next year he'll be in trouble.

As long as Gawn's knees hold up I have no doubt he'll become a dominant ruckman.

Have heard from a very reliable source that we're going to chase Hale fairly heavily in trade week.

Not sure what to think......would rather him than PJ as Jamar's back-up for a few years until Gawn and Fitz come on that's for sure.

Reckon it could be a good idea if he doesn't cost us much.

He will cost you pick 16. I think you'll miss the boat with your 2nd round pick.

1. We don't have pick 16

2. Why should we give up a 1st round pick for a player who barely played half the year in your AFL side????

first round pick for Hale is a joke! haha nice one!

I'd suggest a late second round/early third round for someone like Hale, similar to what we'd get for Warnock if he walked.

They're both pretty decent AFL players who got stuck in the VFL due to too many of their ilk (Hale - rucks at north; Warnock - KPDs at the Dees) but are a step above the VFL. Both around the 26 mark too.

You can suggest all you like, but you won't be getting a ready made AFL competent ruckman with 120-140 games of currency left in him for a pick in the 30's. I guarantee it.

Hale has much more value than Warnock. Hale would be 1st ruck of at least 3 clubs right now.

Gold Coast, StKilda, Hawthorn and Geelong are all in the market for a ready made ruckman. The Bulldogs, Power and Crows may also be interested. None of these 7 clubs including Melbourne that have 2 better ruckman than Hale.

Really? sorry I just read it off the draft board, it must have been incorrect.

Because a pick in the 30's won't get him.

doesn't matter, just a technicality

a pick in the 30's will have to get him, no club will offer more for a player who won't get many games at North next season, simple as that. The fact is North don't need him, clubs know this and they won't play hardball with North. If North don't want to pay his salary, then they will probably take less than what he is worth.

If he had played the entire season, completely different story, when players like nathan jones, a 22 year with more than 100 games, get talked about as being worth a pick 30 something, than Hale isn't any different

In a word, no. They're both around the same mark and if you can't see that, then you're way too one-eyed. Warnock would be first choice full back at a fair few clubs as well - Hawthorn, Richmond, Freo to name a few.

They're both in the same boat, both similar in ages, both similar in ability (in fact, I'd suggest Warnock is a safer bet consistency-wise) and therefore likely to be around the same mark for a trade.

Yeah, no offence, but you don't have a clue mate. Post that stuff on the Hawthorn, Richmond or Freo board and see how far you get.
