I have a friend in the US who kept telling me about a musician she likes by the name of Ari Hest. In 2008 he embarked on a project called 52 and I decided to subscribe, even though I hadn't heard much of his music at all.

What it involved was the release of a brand new song every week of the year. There were varying levels of subscription, the minimum cost being USD20 so I thought I would give it a shot.

I am sure other artists have done this sort of thing before but it was certainly the first time I had come across it.

He ended up getting over 1000 subscribers and each week, along with releasing the song, he would post a brief blog on how it came to be written, along with the lyrics.

What made it interesting was the fact that at the end of the year every subscriber was able to vote on what they thought the top 12 songs were. From that poll, the top 12 polling songs would be touched up in the studio (the original songs were recorded in his apartment) and then would comprise his new album - effectively meaning that the subscribers selected its track listing. The album has just been released and is called Twelve Mondays.

I was amazed by the quality of the songs released during the year. Of the 52, there were probably only 8 that I didn't like or thought were average. Of the ones I really liked, only 4 made it onto the album - so there is plenty of material left over for another album or two from the songs not chosen.

Anyway, I just found the whole experience pretty interesting, especially given that I only subscribed out of curiosity and wasn't expecting much - plus I don't normally go for music like this.

Here is his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/arihest

Cheers.
Thats a SHITLOAD of B sides :thumbsu::p

Not sure if it's too early or whatever but meh...

My band's is - http://www.myspace.com/sanatoriumlake

1 song up, average quality, wasn't overly happy with the vocals but I still thought it sounded cool.

Any input is appreciated:)

Not bad....buzzy guitars..all it needed was some double-kick and screeches and you have yourself a BM band

If you ever make it big, don't forget to take old Schism on as a roadie

When and where can we get the EP?

Haha glad to see you're keen mate cheers. It will be on sale in about 6 weeks at any of our gigs or just online via Paypal and we just post it out to you. Talking to a few labels about distribution contracts atm, but no matter what happens with that we will have the first lot ready to go in about 6 weeks. Maybe sooner. \m/.

Thanks mate (=. Yeah probably rotate to a couple of different tracks off the EP on the coming Sunday or Monday. Keep em relatively fresh. I'll post up here again when that happens. Good to hear the positive feedback thanks guys.

Just for those who are interested, there are a couple of different new tracks off the upcoming EP up on our Myspace for listening now.

Cool tunskies man, just read the first couple of pages of the thread with people not liking the vocal style, have to disagree. Clean vocals would def be a massive fail with this.

Thanks mate. Yeah i guess it's just people not understanding the style. We are like melodic thrash/death metal. Not metalcore or something like that with clean hooks. Cheers for the support.

Ayera

Well, I'm no expert on the different variations of metal, but I really think you guys are trying to cram too many ideas into each song. The second song, "Sufference" in particular, is a bit of an overblown mess. It needs some ruthless editing. You could probably get 2 or 3 songs out of it.

Vocals are OK for that style of music, but I can't understand anything the singer is saying in those types of songs.

"Black Messiah" is the better track by a mile. It's a lot more organised.

There's plenty of strong playing by all members of the band in both songs. You all know your stuff, but like a lot of these types of bands, everyone is going 10 to the furlong all the time and it gets very tiring to listen to.
