If they are homophobic comments they shouldn't be made to anyone...

So the person evicted was in the CS area but not actually a member?
Agreed they shouldn't be made to or about anyone. We had invited other people from the surrounding areas.
This has been dealt with by the club.

My brother and I have been at the first two home games and have noticed a couple of things:

  • The starting 'Oh When The Saints Go Marching In' chant is most certainly a positive. It's going to take a little time for everyone to warm to it, but it will gradually improve and fast become something to behold.
  • As someone fairly new to the goal square end of the ground there isn't an overly inclusive feeling amongst the squad, sure there are the people who have established themselves over the years there but for new comers its very much a foreign land. This falls on everyone (including myself), but everyone should make a more concerted effort to get to know one another and to have everyone feel apart of the goal square end of the ground. It's simple things such as this that will help to form better cohesion amongst the supporters and in turn create a better cheer squad.
  • It's time to move on from the tacky god awful chants like 'lets kick another one'. We need to have simple and bold chants that get people talking about how impressive we our. This comes from simple things that take little effort when you get down to it. Firstly, putting your hands up before you clap - it creates an illusion of there being more people there than there actually is. Secondly, having a more consistent flow of chants - too often there are periods where we as supporters go missing, its all well and good to have a crack at our players but lets get us right too. Thirdly, supporting the boys the heaviest when we're scored against for crying out loud! This is the time where the lads need the most support not have us crawl into little shells (this is the thing that gets me the most). Lets get our flags up, lift our voice and show the fellas that we're still there.
If we could patch these little things up over the next few weeks I think you would see a massive improvement from a supporter front.

Try convincing the old ducks who think they own the cheersquad to stop the stupid chants.
I was once told i couldnt have another beer if i was to help holding up the banner.
We get out holding up the banner and theyve spelt the ****ing thing wrong

At an interstate game

Hahahahahaha that would be about right...
Just last week I saw a bloke cop a serve for calling Collingwood 'weak as piss', laughable.
I get the fact that there are kids around but at the end of the day its football not a dance concert.
The fact that they think they can flat ban alcohol at a venue that has an alcoholic license is just ridiculous.
If a fan wants to sledge the general opposition it should just about be encouraged, not rejected.
If a fan wants a beer, by god, they can have a cold one.

The Cheer Squad needs more booming male voices joining, regularly turning up and participating. A lack of new members willing to come and be loud is the biggest issue. We can talk till we're blue in the face about what needs to be done, but unless people are willing to join and participate, it's a bit of a moot point.

the move back to moorabin will help. i would imagine most of the current cheer squad is from the area.

No, not really. We're from all over the place. People don't want to join the CS. People are very free with their criticisms of the CS, but very few are willing to join and help bring about changes.

Alright then, who else is keen to get together before the game and make sure that we do have a few vocal blokes around that end of the ground?
Let's find a spot before the game to meet up and then we can actually bring some more passion into the CS.

Considering it is an AFL Rule that alcohol is banned in the cheer squad areas, I think there would be a good reason for it. There would be a lot more problems if alcohol was permitted in the cheer squad area.

In terms of the bloke calling Collingwood weak as piss, if it is from the same guy who was yelling homophobic comments towards Collingwood and our own supporters, then maybe there is more to it. Even if it came from someone else, the Cheer squad is a family friendly area.

Thinking back now there was an incident with myself at the first 2010 GF. I was sitting in the Saints cheer squad, BJ took that hanger and I got up out of my seat and went ballistic. Older woman behind me shouted 'sit down young man!' as if I were a child and for some reason I shouldn't applaud the moment - I had thought we'd win the bloody thing when he took that.

Didn't seem like much at the time but maybe that mentality of selfishness has carried through over the years.

And i think this is where the biggest problem lies...
People are far too restricted at the AFL nowadays and this is why you have a lack of new members lining for seats in a the CS area because it's just so unattractive.
Your most passionate and vocal supporters are going to be the people who don't want such a strict code of conduct around them.
One of the biggest problems the AFL has is losing supporters not to other codes but to local football, simply due to the fact of such restrictions.
For sure, homophobic comments are most certainly and so is acting like a general dickhead but a bit of freedom really wouldn't kill anyone now would it?
Let's encourage passion rather than being so damn restrictive.

I think they need to scrap the Knock, Knock part... and time it so that it ends just before the siren...

otherwise it was great and will surely build..
yeah that first bit went on way too long, just straight into the song

This.

As I have said previously either in this thread or on the other one, many people are quick to criticise the squad but not many are willing to join and bring about change. There are a few people in the squad currently trying to change how the squad looks and is perceived by everyone, this takes time and needs consistent performance of the cheer squad to change people's opinion and not just the odd game every now and then.

We have guidelines set out by the AFL which is not negotiable in our behaviour and this does deter some people from sitting with us, unfortunately we can't change these rules as it is across the league and not down to our club or cheer squad. We as a cheer squad, should be focused on cheering the boys on field, not sledge the opposition.

Once again if anyone wants to catch up and chat before a game and discuss in person, pm me and will try to arrange something.

What stigma? And how would you remove it?

I think the stigma of it being a reserved seating old person area, at least that is the idea I have been given from others not just on this forum but in person at games.

The problem in the past has been several members of the cheer squad not accepting non cheer squad members sitting in empty spots within the squad and therefore giving a bad look to the cheer squad. People have been sitting in the squad and not chanting, waving flags or getting involved.

There have been many games where our cheer squad has looked rather depleted and other times where our squad has been packed, this will be more constant as on field performance improves. In the mean time we have to be more inviting to goal zone members and other supporters of the club.

There are a few people involved in the squad helping with the change of attitude outsiders view the cheer squad with and I am hoping by the end of the year it is mainly positive, rather than mixed or mainly negative attitude towards the cheer squad.
