Even with the AFL rules, the CS has been struggling to attract young people to provide a loud, colorful and exciting prescence to amp up the players and the crowd.

My suggestion is to send an email to the club highlighting your concerns and suggestions for the CS to grow and improve.

Id say in part it's because of the AFL rules. Passion is squashed out so that it is vanilla enough for the occasional AFL supporter to attend.

And yet other clubs have thriving Cheer Squads. Therefore, what are they doing that the Saints Cheer Squad aren't?

I think the main thing you will see with our cheer squad, is that as on field performance improves our cheer squad will improve, people will be attending games more in the squad and we will have more voices for chanting. I wish this wasn't the case but in my time within the cheer squad I have seen it go from really full each week to empty seats within the squad, people have left the cheer squad due to personal reasons, arguements and fights, time and loss of interest. It sucks to see that the people that have left in the time I have been in the squad have been the people that made us loud, that is something hard to replace, it can be done but it hard as they were part of the heart and soul of the cheer squad family.

It would be interesting to find out what other squads are doing, I know that politics within cheer squads exist in all of them and have heard stories from them, however whilst I would love to implement the things that work at other cheer squads, I couldn't be certain that it would work in our squad. We definately need to tailor what works with other squads to fit the St Kilda brand.

With all due respect mate, our cheer squad is one of the quietest and least visual appealing cheer squads in the league, so maybe it's time to start implementing things from other clubs despite wether you will think it will work or not.

Here is my idea. What if we get rid of the cheer squad and make the entire end behind the goals at etihad a general admission area but only for saints members. Reserve the front row directly behind the goals for some people who want to lead chants, wave floggers but the rest of it any saints member can sit where they like in that area behind the goals. Give every ga saints member a plain red, white or black flag about a3 paper size and when we kick a goal there will be a sea of red, white and black flags.

Considering it is an AFL Rule that alcohol is banned in the cheer squad areas, I think there would be a good reason for it. There would be a lot more problems if alcohol was permitted in the cheer squad area.

In terms of the bloke calling Collingwood weak as piss, if it is from the same guy who was yelling homophobic comments towards Collingwood and our own supporters, then maybe there is more to it. Even if it came from someone else, the Cheer squad is a family friendly area.
Incorrect
Alcohol was not banned in the seats i was sitting in
Otherwise i wouldnt have brought it up as an issue

It bothered me not
I drank what i drank, did it responsibly and drove my wife and myself home
I was more embarassed that grown adults couldnt spell on the banner

Theres one lad in the c/s who has tried for a number of years to get changes, he gets shouted down and somehow out voted by the stuck in 1985 members.
No ones questioning these people's loyalty, dedication and love for our club and the game
But choking the life out of something and creating an environment where no one wants to be associated in because of embarrassment and out dated ideas is not helping

My point is that we need to tailor it to work for our squad, we need to look at what is working in other squads and how can we use that for us, not just copy and paste the idea but to get inspiration from it.

Can we poach the Bulldogs' banner writer?

Alright,
I think it's well established now that a number of us on this thread (myself included) are fed up with the current state of our cheer squad.
If you have the ability to sit behind the goals for the game this week then let's sit, and make some noise together.
A shift in change isn't going to come from a few murmurs on the internet, it's got to actually happen on gameday.
I'm suggesting we meet up behind the seats (where the CS is located) come in together and take up a row or two and just egg each other on with whatever chant we have to throw.
Sure we might not be great the first time out, but let's actually attempt to do something this week rather than just sit back and bitch.

My god, I wish I was there. Tom, good on you and I hope you guys make everyone understand what real Saints support looks and sounds like. If the club's official cheer squad don't like it, that's too damn bad. If they do grumble at you, may I suggest a friendly invitation to them to join in with you? Whatever you do, don't let them stop you.

I've been pushing for this sort of affirmative action for many years on the Saintsational forum, to see you and others on this forum organise crowd support, it's just so fantastic.

I hope you'll have a lot of fun and make a lot of noise and I'll raise a glass to you all, (probably orange juice at that time in the morning) from o'er here.

Go Saints!

Just saying the club has just visited a number of schools in Stkilda's area .
It's a free game for all children , provide kids transport from Moorabbin ground 2 buses with teachers
Provide them with floggers etc , free pie & drink ..nothing to lose .

I think this would have a very negative effect on a lot of people, myself included. I really think that with our on field performance improving this year, you will see an improvement in the squad, not just as a result of the performance of the team but also what is happening behind the scenes.

Just following on from what a couple of others have said about having a general admission area behind the goals instead of reserved seating.

I believe it's a bloody grouse idea, I myself (and I'm sure others here have too) have seen it first hand work at MVFC.
The Northern Terrace has arguably the best sporting atmosphere in the land. This stems largely from its continued loyal support, but its GA policy and its openness in having non-members coming in plays a massive part in getting bums on the seats behind the goals. Replicating what they have implemented could be a great idea.

Is it something that's going to initially upset current RS members? Probably.
Is it something thats going to bring about a higher attendance to games? Yes.
Will it breath new life into an area that many view as aged and bland? Yes.
Is it going to encourage new and existing fans alike to come along and experience a great St.Kilda atmosphere? Yes.

It really is as simple as going across the road and seeing what are friends over at the A-League are doing.
Shit-can them all you like but the atmosphere at their games is like nothing I've experienced at the AFL.

Raw passion is missing at the AFL - GA where the CS is located could be a key part of the solution for the Saints.

I think it is too early to say just get rid of the squad entirely, I do believe however converting the reserved cheersquad seats changed to General Admission Cheersquad seating is the way to go, then it allows goal zone members to fill gaps easier. I would like to see the goal zone interacting more with the cheer squad to deliver chants.

As I said I would like to see ways of improving the squad before we talk about just getting rid of it because I have been working tirelessly with others in the squad to improve it. Can we keep the talk on ideas to improve rather than get rid of.

On a side note looking forward to what people think of the squad tomorrow, with two new flags hoping they add to the look of the squad.

Watching on tv I could hear the squad, how was it for others, especially those in attendance

I agree, as a regular critic of the CS, I thought they sounded great today.
I was at the game. Right next to them. They wee pretty good I thought. I would have loved them to try and get the slow version of the song going themselves at the start of the third, but hey.

Apart from their si called leader bitching on Facebook DURING THE GAME that the Moorabbin Wing supporters next to them wouldn't joun in on the chants.

The thing was the VAST majority of MW supporters where in their usual spots Level 3 Aisles 35 to 37.

The cheersquad and the little clique they are a joke and an embarrassment.

I do not believe the leader was the one who was involved with the facebook incident yesterday. I agree that the person shouldn't have posted what had been posted.

I have nothing against the Moorabbin Wing and would love the feud between the two groups to cease, this won't happen until both groups realise that we both support the same club and we show our support differently, let us keep cheering the club that we love rather than having a go at each other.

What fued? Nobody on the MW even thinks about the CS.

We are mainly older people who dont want anything to do with such an organisation.

Maybe members of the CS should get their facts right before attacking people who weren't anywhere near the CS yesterday.

No wonder the CS is a shambles abd an embarrassment.

The bay of Saints fans next to the Cheer Squad was an initiative of the Club and you got tickets to sit there via Ticketmaster ..it had nothing to do with the Moorabbin Wing, save for a couple of our regulars taking the opportunity to sit down there.

Unfortunately during the game a member of the Cheersquad (and to the best of my knowledge one of the people trying to "reform" it ) took it upon herself to...

A. Assume incorrectly the bay was a Moorabbin Wing initiative

B. Decide for herself that they weren't making enough noise

C. Took to Facebook to leave a big spray on the Moorabbin Wing Facebook page that justifiably got a lot of people offside given how misinformed it was

If this is the type of mentality that the "reform group" are bringing to the table, then our squad is screwed...and I have it on very good authority that one member with great intentions (and way more common sense) is about to throw his hands up in despair and throw in the towel.
Its gone beyond any sort of self-generated "rebuild" . The Club HAVE to get involved and sort it out. If that means waving a big stick and upsetting some egos, so be it.

Its not just onfield that needed a rebuild from the boots up sadly.

I am not going further with the post from yesterday as I know nothing about it. We need to move on from it and keep cheering our Saints.
