Sat next to the cheer squad today and they were bloody hopeless! Most of the time they don't even start the chants - and they just aren't loud and energetic enough! But they were all full of it pre-game having their photos taken for the addy, and making noise for the background of a channel 7 reporter who asked them to!

I think we should drop the "Geelong - clap-clap-clap" and go with a Geeeee-loooong chant! Freo had their "freeeeeeoooooo" chant going today at the same time as our clapping nonsense and they drowned our chant out every time!

I've posted this in another thread, but fair dinkum this needs to be changed from universal love to roast. The lack of support from the cheersquad when things weren't going our way today was just staggering. To those at home those "Geelong clap clap clap" chants you heard nearly after every Freo goal WERE NOT started by the cheer-squad they were started by general supporters. On the other hand whenever we kicked a goal Freo's cheersquad was right back trying to get their players up and about. Really not good enough, classic bandwagoning.

If a team needs a bunch of gomers and misfits to pump it up then there's something seriously wrong.

What about just making the place a bit of a hostile environment. The place was quite as a church from quarter time on. May as well have played the game at Etihad for all the good the home town support did

I thought the Geelong crowd as a whole was pretty loud. Every time Freo started a chant after a goal we responded and drowned them out except for the final minute for obvious reasons.

I am curious. Are there any Geelong BF posters who are or were once members of the Geelong Cheer Squad? They turn out week after week, rain, hail or shine, and do their thing.

I had a close look at the cheer squad last Friday and couldn't believe how many "mature" aged members there are.

Are there perks in being a member of the cheer squad? Does the squad practice? How many chants does it have in its repertoire?

Me. Front a centre, week in, week out. Go the mighty catters...

Take a seat.

Watched your work this afternoon champ. Best of a very quiet group. A few loud drunk blokes a few rows behind me got the crowd going more than the entire cheer squad.

It's more than just the cheer squad, the entire crowd is dominated by older country folk who just enjoy going to the football and sitting down with the thermos, blanket and chatting with Gladys. Such is life. We're a different club. We have less vocal ferals.

Having said that the cheer squad has four blokes occasionally trying and 100 who sit and chat regardless. It's a bit frustrating.

You're spot on there... We did our very best to get the rest of the crowd going... It's not easy when they just sit and watch. Seemed very much like 2000 freo supporters vs. a few patches around the ground of Geelong fans who actually want to get up and cheer - as always.

You think we should drop it hey? Perhaps you should join the cheer squad and do it yourself?

You sat next to the cheer squad today did you? That's funny, because when the crowd was quiet and I stood up in the front row to rev them up, I didn't see anyone next to the cheer squad standing up to cheer!

Armchair critic.

Yup, thought the same thing, was really proud of us as a whole today.

I saw you! But I completely forgot your username, otherwise I would have come over and said hi.

So you are a member of the cheer squad?! If so, personally, I seriously think you guys need to lift! Please bring it up at your next meeting!

And no, you wouldn't have seen me standing up like an idiot pretending to be part of the cheer squad! But you certainly would of heard me cheering my lungs out mate! I don't profess to be a chant starter - that's why I haven't joint the cheer squad! But for all the people who actually call themselves a "cheer squad member" live up to ya ****** title and CHEER! for all the perks the cheer squad members get, they really should do a better job to earn those perks!

The amount of times I turned to either side cheering straight at people to try to get them out of their seats, and they just stared! Not good enough!

kkk, Ive got a theory on all this- some people saying the ground is quiet, others saying it isnt. It perhaps depends on what part of the ground you are sitting in? I am usually down the Moorabool city st end- the cheap seats out in the outer. You can hear a pin drop down there. Sat in the new stand today, the crowd was going bananas. And yes, drowning out EVERY Fremantle chant they started, except for the last.

Eh- whatever...

Anyone in major shock after the siren went? Still cannot believe it. And to think all the ****ing whinging those tossers did over the past week. Well baby got their bottle didnt they.

You can't tell me I need to lift - reading above you'll see people saying I was the loudest of the lot! Half the cheer squad is over 60, and they just sit there and clap. Those who aren't scream their lungs out. We do the best we bloody can.

As a general rule, we never chant after an opposition goal, because it tends to just make their supporters sound louder. But today, we had to! 2000 Freo fans were making the usually quiet Simonds Stadium sound like 90,000 pies fans at the G!

The players stand is VERY loud - but supporters just don't get up and cheer. It's as simple as that.

I'm not saying you personally mate! You sound like your doing a great job! I'm talking about the cheer squad as a collective whole! Too quiet, too mellow!

Maybe they need to start recruiting some fresh young blood to pump it up a bit to help the likes of you out!

It's not quite a recruiting thing... From what I can see, it's pretty much full - of people who aren't going anywhere, but aren't prepared to get up and cheer, either.

As for 'bringing it up at the next meeting', the cheer squad isn't really run like that. There's a group of people who run and organize the cheer squad to make things go smoothly, organize banner making, run fundraisers, etc.

It's not really a 'open to suggestions' type organization - It's been run the same way by the same people for decades. These people haven't missed a game in decades, haven't changed the way things happen in decades, and aren't about to start taking ideas, suggestions and criticisms from a 19 year old who's only been a part of the cheer squad for the last 50 or so games.

As for the 'elderly, mature' look the cheer squad seems to have, that's spot on - I think the percentage of Geelong members, not just cheer squad members, are older than your average bear. They're the ones that have been there for years, and seem quite happy to just sit up the back and clap.

If young people willing to cheer are looking to join, they're welcome to! But I'm pretty sure the problem is bigger than that.

Another point - the 'GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELOOOOOOOOOONGGG' chant is my absolute favourite, but the 'Been there for years, don't change a thing' people aren't a fan of it.

Try my best to get it going in the aisles after a win, though!
