Cheer Squad

Another good move by our board. Reading Simons reasons, and watching each week, I think it is a good idea to refresh the cheer squad, reading between the lines all was not well there.
Simon Garlick has a lot on his plate, getting involved in the running of the cheer squad would no be a prority unless it was absolutely necessary.
I have no doubt this action had to be taken. Go doggies.

Always a touchy subject I think, when you have volunteers doing something over a long period of time and then wish to initiate some change. Cannot question anyone in the cheer squad's loyalty, or dedication as fans of the Club but just on what I have observed from afar and online re: this scenario, I get th sense they Club has made a call to get either a paid position in charge, or spilled things in response to a perceived need to regenerate the group.

I don't like the idea of a cheer squad, so much as the fact that every fan should go to games wearing their colours, prepared to cheer and overtly express their passion for the Club though various forms. Make some flags, hang up some banners, decorate the area of the ground you occupy with the symbols of our Club. Cheer. High five the bloke next to you, encourage kids to barrack.

Perhaps a new group of people who are motivated will occupy the area behind the goals and lead the way for the rest of the fans in creating a vibrant and active display of passion.

Well summed up.

Does the club 'pay' for banner material/booking seats at every ground? Anyway I'm not really go to talk about money as it's more than that.

I'm not in anyway suggesting that the loyalty shown by the cheer squad members shouldn't go unnoticed or unrecognised but in this proffessional day and age I don't see the need for a 'cheer squad' or a banner for that matter. The hard thing is - for the club, is what SonOfScray mentioned: They are affiliated to the club but they aren't on the pay role. This is a tricky situation to handle.

Can't we just rope off the 'home' end for Bulldog members only on a first in best dressed basis. I guarantee you it'll be much the same people cheering just as hard as they always have(god bless them) but any affiliation is cut.

This might hurt some people but I don't see the point of a banner anymore either. Don't mean to sound 'grinchy' because the people that dedicate their time to it do a fantastic job but if all clubs got rid of them tomorrow it wouldn't lessen the game.

(My old man still thinks a 'virtual holographic' banner will one day exist)

Look, it's sad for all they've done to come to nothing in the end, but please for the love of all that is good don't start using it as an opportunity to take shots at a club that for too long has promoted jobs for the boys, complacency and toleration of failure, as soon as it starts to really take control of it's affairs and demand success in every department.
"Oh, we won't be going to games any more". Going to microwave your memberships too?
Thanks for all you've done for the club, but if you're going to jump off then do it quietly. The club doesn't need people holding it back like this anymore.

"We've been blamed for people not going to the football when we were the ones there supporting the team when there was only four people in the cheer squad,'' he said.
"I'm gutted because the football and the cheer squad has been part of my life."
Mr Munn, whose mum Margaret started the cheer squad, said he had been told he was "no longer required'' despite years of service. "I won't be going to games any more,'' he said. "It just wouldn't feel right. It's the way that they have done it that hurts.''

Hmmm...this is the sort of attitude that makes me think the board have a point about taking personal control of the cheer squad(wasn't just about supporting the Bulldogs). Like has been said, they're affiliated to the club but they aren't part of the(pay role) club which isn't ideal in 2014+

Have they actually been kicked out of the cheer squad? Or is it just being misinterpreted and sensationalized? In other words, they just were just removed from their roles within the cheer squad and not removed entirely?

However, if they were moved on and kicked off the cheer squad entirely, why would the club do that to two life members? And if they claim they we are not getting the numbers, why would you remove people entirely?

I am leaning towards the first point, and feels like the club might be getting bit of a beat up for it.

To all I sat there a few games last year and the Cheer squad looked tired ,worn out and no great deal of structure .Its not anyones fault but it needed looked l at and needed a revamp

To Simon Carlick Some ideas

Idea 1: Let young children have the opportunity to sit with the Cheer squad on home game day on a trial basis
Idea 2 : Employ a face painter to sit with the Cheer squad on game day to attract young people to the cheer squad
Idea 3 If a parent has 2-3 children enrolled in the cheer squad they sit free on game day within the cheer squad
Idea 4: Have a roster within the cheer squad for all members to get the opportunity to hold the banner on game day
Idea 5: make sure that the people within the cheer squad are adhering to the structure within the cheer squad and make sure its a family environment

It's quite a good idea to have the captain in waiting as ambassador liasing with the cheer squad. His eventual ascension and close association with them will be a source of pride and inspiration to the squad and may also help to drive the numbers.

Pretty impressive effort from cheer squad members with what they do. However it is a bit insular, and getting stale and unoriginal (bulldogs, clap clap clap... coooooooonnnnn.....). For god's sakes the next iteration of the cheer squad needs catchy and innovative songs and chants. How amazing would it be if every time Dahlhaus does something awesome we have a stirring rendition of (to the tune of Sir Bob's Stir It Up)

Tear it up, little dahlhaus, tear it up.
Tear it up, little dahlhaus, tear it up.

Imagine the whole ground singing that! It would be ethereal and nuts.

I suggest we just blatantly steal other club chants, even from the EPL.

Like rip off Richmond's 'Who are we, we are the boys from the MCG', just replace "boys from the MCG" with "sons of the mighty West" and spell out Bulldogs. Steal Collingwood's echoey chant and listen to it ring around Etihad with the roof shut. Chant 'Footscray, clap clap clap' once in a while. Hawthorn's "Gimme an H, H, A, A... What does it spell? Hawthorn... Hawthorn" etc. What about singing All you need is Rough, like on the banner?
As much as I despise the banal "Aussie Aussie Aussie" chant, I don't mind the Doggie Doggie Doggie one, at least it's unique to us.
Just constant noise, chant at cult figure players like Dahl, Big Will, Prudden, Campbell.

Have we ever had any imaginative chants? Good point though I don't know if changing the organisers will do it. Have to see.....

Thats all great but if you only have fifteen people in the cheer squad no one can hear them They need more members before they do anything

Agree 100%. Need to drum it in from the start though. The tired old Bulldogs, clap clap clap chant is boring.

'All you need is Rough' is gold. Simple. Catchy. Easy. Genius.

I welcome the move so long as it's done in the the right spirit. Something had to be done and just because a few noses have been put out of joint, doesn't make it wrong.

Ps: Didn't Eddie make every single Pies cheer squad member reapply a few years ago? He transformed the cheer squad member base.

Is David Porter the guy who hasnt missed a game (pre season, praccy including) in over 20+ years? Pretty poor form axing him if true

I'm reading it they are restructuring the way the cheer squad is run, and any kid or adult can join up. No members are being "axed". David and co have just as much opportunity as the rest of us to get on board instead of exaggerating his story for the media and sulking. He and they should be applauding fresh ideas and jumping on board to see where they can help. Ffs.

maybe we are gonna have hot cheerleaders....

I volunteer :p

While I understand where the club is coming from and why they did it, it still is a bit sad. From my understanding it sounds like they've been removed form the cheer squad entirely, that surely wasn't necessary? They could have stayed in the cheer squad, just not have such prominent roles in it. But it sounds like Garlick and co. have a plan, and as the number were massively declining it was time for a shake up.

See if we did that everytime he did something awesome, we'd get so bored of hearing it at least 50 times a game.

I don't understand.
The club controls who can become a cheersquad member
The club controls where everyone sits
The club controls what banners can be displayed
The club controls what cannot be chanted
The club are even so nice to design one side of the banner with a sponsor message so the cheersquad don't need to think of how to fill the banner they are creating
The club even provide all sorts of plastic spirit fingers and plastic clappers with sponsor logos to lift the spirits of the fans so they can 'sing for the boys'

Surely this is very conducive to developing a passionate active supporter scene to rival all others?
