Are there any posters on the Freo board who are currently part of the cheer squad? I hoping there are as it would be nice to get a direct connection without trying to go through the club

I think a discussion needs to be started on how to get back our raucous home game atmosphere. 54,000 people in the house last night and I was less than impressed for much of the night. Is Optus too comfortable to get loud? Do we just not give enough of a **** anymore?

I'll collect my thoughts before posting anything further, but just thought I might get the conversation going.

I managed to get to the Millerntor last week to catch a St Pauli game, amazing experience and I'm always blown away by how much noise a crowd of less than 30,000 people can be, definitely louder than it got at any point last night.

This is how they walk onto the ground:

Now I'm not expecting pyro or anything, I realise this is a different game to European football. But something as simple as the cheer squad starting a FRE-MAN-TLE chant while hells bells plays, the whole stadium joining in and creating an intimidating atmosphere before the ball is bounced, why do we not do something like this at our home games?

Are we just not as passionate, are we bred differently?

We can't even get the Freeeee-oooooo chant happening anymore, every attempt is quite pitiful tbh.

I dunno, Fremantle used to have a real raucous home game atmosphere and it's completely gone, and it starts with a flaccid cheersquad who do nothing to lead the rest of us (you know, their job)

Who runs the cheer squad? Do the club sanction what they can and can't chant? Do they sanction which flags they're allowed to bring in?

I’ve been disappointed for years, but am not willing to put my hand up to be in the cheer squad either.

I agree with others - the PA system is so much louder now

I only get to see a game a year as I need to travel.
I would love to incite the crowd..
Was upstairs in the pavilion & I was belting out a chant.
Think I gave myself some hearing damage 😂

Crowd gets drowned out by the music after each goal.
Then it is bounce down again, the crowd loses any momentum.

If you had some loud people like myself strategically spaced out a bit.

Linked up with a mobile message you could get a chant synchronised.
3 bays next to each other with 1 loudmouth it would work..
The more would make it even easier.

A lot of crew want to get involved they are just a bit timid.

Can you imagine starting a player chant. How pumped would Tracey or Vossy be, hearing the crowd chant their name.
It would be worth 2 goals a game & keep the umpires in their place.
It would be quite intimidating 😀

If anybody wants to do something I will come down for it & organise & see if it works.
I know of 1 person who would be in & is very vocal.
We can't rely on the cheer squad god bless them..

Honestly I wouldn't mind taking a page out of what WWE crowds do (and I assume football crowds in Europe) and chant people's names to the tune of Boney M's Daddy Cool.

Imagine Bruce kicking a goal and 50,000 plus start chanting "Murphy Murphy Reeiiidddddd, Murphy Murphy Reeiiidddddddd"

I liked the Seven Nation Army chant Raz's mates did for him during his debut too. "OHHHHHHH NEIL ERASSSSSMUSSS"

I miss the half full Subi crowds when we were lucky to kick 2 goals in a row.
We had the best atmosphere in the AFL back then ❤️
Honestly I think the crowds are worse at big games.

More idiot drunks who think because they paid for a ticket the team has to win, and more social attendees who really don't care for the game.

The side effects of being slightly successful.

I also think Optus being that little bit detached from the field doesn't help. It was definitely a better atmosphere at Subi.

I sit in the block next to the cheer-squad. A couple of things I would say are that it seems that maybe a third of the block is the actual cheer-squad and the rest are people that have chosen to sit in that block for whatever reason. Also, there are people in the cheer-squad who do try to start chants but hardly anyone actually joins in. The issue is not just the cheer-squad but also those who sit nearby who don't join in.

I'm guessing there's no one on BF that's part of the cheer squad then? (that seems unlikely tbh). If you're not comfortable posting in here and want to sling me a DM, I'd be keen to chat more!

May as well keep a thread going regarding game day atmosphere etc though.

I did notice for the first time this sign on the fence at the city end

I recon this is another thing we could do more of around the ground.

When the Ashes were here, the Poms went around and basically made optus feel like their home ground, these signs were all throughout the stadium

Do the cheersquad get to the ground early to set up? It would be cool having this type of thing all the way around Optus on gamedays

People try that. There’s a group that will chant a players name after they kick a goal and instead of joining in the cheer squad told them off for not doing their chants instead

Ever since we got rid of the anchor ceremony at start it been going down hill

We were once a working hand club but now I think duevto prices and world economy we have a higher proportion of upper class members and usually , just like eagles fans generally , are much quieter

Bring back wharfie time too

Status Mexican wave !!! Haven’t seen one of them in a long time

See this is something I wouldn't mind getting a little help from the PA with.

They do this at football games after every goal, the announcer gives the short spiel, announces the goal scorers first name and then everyone at once chants their last name.

Come to think of it if they're going to insist on reading out the starting 23 before the bounce it could be done then too.

But nah we're too passive

I will sit next to the cheer squad & they can tell me off all there want 😂😂😂
Or they can join in & create some atmosphere.

I sat in the bay next to the Richmond members at marvel 2 years ago.. They got security to move me & my adult daughter. Apparently you weren't allowed to wear purple in that area 😔
I am pretty loud 🔊.. no swearing or anything..😁

Can we do a group chat on bigfooty ? Or WhatsApp or Facebook even? A private group. So it will just be those who are keen and ready to give it 100% & the negatives can just go & negative amongst themselves. 😂
I can lead it.
It will be fun, great for the players & maybe even make some new friends 🤙

I really think we could do something.

For anyone who is keen I really want to start something.

Community 💪

Blame Collingwood, set the standard for bad behavior, if they hadn’t been such floggs the crack down on Cheer Squads may never have happened.

Might be just me but I hate Mexican waves at the footy. I find them cringe. Don't mind them during slow moments at the cricket. But yeah, Subi seemed much louder than Optus. A couple of finals at Optus have been loud though.
I hate the wave. Some people in the crowd did try to start “USA USA” but it was met by the majority with a cringe.

Why do you hate the wave ?
I'm not a huge fan. I wouldn't not share in it.
I would never not support a supporter, as long as it's not abusive or intimidation.
Be part of the love.

USa chant is cringe in real life.
Come game day, & supporting 1 of the lads,
I can get behind it. It's harmless fun.

Don't we go to the game to join the atmosphere & support the club ?
