Hey. I was wondering if anyone here is in the cheer squad? I wanted to know what it involves exactly besides sitting behind the goals. I've sat there a couple of times and have found it to be good in a sense that you can chat to other Melbourne supporters about the game but bad in the sense that there is a lot of obvious bias.

How do you get to go and hold up the banner and even make it? That just a random choice out of the cheer squad or a semi-permanent job? I remember one guy with a massive black afro holding the banner up at seemingly every game.

Hey mate, I used to be in the cheer squad as a kid. Its proably changed a bit since then but It used to involve as much as you wanted it too. I didnt do much but rock up and sit with them. The rule was back then If you turned up on a week night and helped out with the banner you could go on the ground and hold it up. Maybe contact the club and see what they have to say.

I'd love to help with the banner when I have time (upcoming holidays would be a perfect time) but I'm not so much interested in joining the cheer squad as I prefer to have freedom in where I sit, whether it be with mates supporting other teams or in the MCC or up in my favourite spot on the top tier flank where I get the best view. Is it possible to do the banner but not be in the cheersquad?

I love sitting in the cheer squad. Not only does it make me feel extremely intelligent (let's face it, even though they barrack for Melbourne, the majority are special), but I love the atmosphere. They cheer hard and complain hard to the umpires. Nothing wrong with that.
