Chelsea to sign £3m wonderkid
15 September 2003

Chelsea are set to trump Manchester United once again, this time by signing 14-year-old American wonderkid Freddy Adu for a £3m fee.

The highly-rated teenager, who has been part of the USA Under-17 set-up since he was 13, was set to move to Old Trafford until Chelsea and Roman Abramovich's billions entered the scene.

Powerhouse clubs Real Madrid and Inter Milan were also linked with youngster but his parents prefer him to start his club career in an English speaking nation.

Adu was the shining star of the recent FIFA Under 17 World Championships in Finland where he scored four goals before the USA was knocked out of the tournament by eventual champions Brazil in the Quarter-Finals.

I was under the impression that the rules had changed to make it much harder for under-18s to move internationally. I would be surprised if he has a Euro passport because he is Ghanian or somesuch

He'll probably be burnt out by the time he gets out of his teens.
My advice: Go to the MLS and go to Europe when you're older.

Could be a wonderkid and future superstar.
Could break his leg and suffer a knee-reco and never be the same again.
Not worth the money at this stage. Get Muscat onto him and he'll never play a senior game.

Don't forget Lucas Neill...he loves to break legs...just ask Carragher...once he stops crying like the pussy he is...bloody Liverpool (GO CHELSEA!)
