Interesting that everyone watched this and thought "How could the Soviet political class so badly ignore the reality of the situation, which only made its effects worse?" only for a year later numerous countries adopting this very same strategy to deal with coronavirus.

Did they though? They moved to contain and stop it within days. Yeah they tried to downplay it's effects, but they didn't ignore it.

Coronavirus was knocking around for a few months before it got serious.

Bought and watched this a couple of months ago. Really liked it and found the story in general interesting enough to go and buy Midnight in Chernobyl by Richard Higginbotham, which came out around the same time. Yet to give it a read but will be interesting to compare to two.

* As for the accents, it was fine once you got past the surprise of it. Although I guess that means I'm not part of #SovietActorsLivesMatter or something...

People can’t live there for over 20,000 years! 20,000!! That’s mind blowing

Thats only the area directly around the reactor.

Radiation levels in most of the exclusion zone are almost back to normal background levels apart from disposal sites and the red forest.

Not according to that show the other night. Parts of Pripyat still high level. Showed a shop there where they can’t stay longer than couple of weeks.

Surely the high rise buildings in pypriat don't have much longer left, left for 35 odd years now with no maintenance.

That or soviet engineering is a bit better than we westerners make out.
