So you didnt see Stokes getting the ball at the half back line? He seldom cherry picks, and when he does its hard running that gets him there, unlike Milne and Lloyd who stand and wait there in the goal square.

It's still cherry picking, but like I said it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Stokes runs hard and gets plenty of the ball usually. Milne's job is to be a crumber and Lloyd is a full forward. Although it gets frustrating when someone gets 2 goals in the goal square and 2 goals eslewhere and they've kicked 4 and people praise them for a great game.

How do you know it's cherry picking unless you are at the game and watch the build up to the goal?

Who are the players who always seem to be alone in the goal square waiting for a handball?

My nomination: Matthew Stokes.

Think you're spot on Zeke. But i think it has more to do with football smarts and hard running to position than 'easy' goals as you are obviously implying. In which case Stokes does it better than most.

You obviously didn't read beyond the first post.

I didn't suggest it was a negative attribute - it just struck me that he always seems to be there waiting for the dish off and gift goal.

It's great awareness if nothing else.

:)

:)

Read the posts mate, just wanted to get some support behind Stokesy to get the point across that 'football brains' doesnt equal 'easy goals'.

If anything it says more about the opposition who allow dangerous forwards to get free in the goalsquare.

Shannon Byrne?

Dont get to see Geelong play a lot on FTA in WA, but every time I do, he seems to be on the receiving end of some 'gimme' goals.

Halleluja! Can you come down to the Cats thread? Everyone seems to be jumping on the Byrnes bandwagon after kicking a couple of gimmes tonight!

Tom Hawkins is the king of this. Would hardly kick any other kind of goal. Nablett did okay last year also.

Buddy probably kicks more goals from 0.73 metres than anyone, although there's more roving off the pack or scooping and running from 15m out than taking the handball.

Jeffrey Farmer also doesn't mind this tactic at all.

Buddy got a few today...but like Stokes, i think its a function of a sharp footy brain to be in the right place at the right time.

Stokes wins a lot of his own ball, hell of a mark for a munchkin.

For the most part, like any good cherry-picker, its just being front & square. Remember that one kids. Front & Square. Once more. Front & Square.

Don't know about goals from the goal square leaders but in terms of fairly cheap gimmie goals Franklin would have to get more than anyone these days. Stokes is up there too but Byrnes is worse for Geelong. Is especially worse with Byrnes because he can not kick them from anywhere other than absolute point blank (where he will still miss more than most players) whereas Stokes is fairly deadly any shot at goal that the 'average player' should get.

I was always told that you a "fox in the box" if you work hard to get to the goal square to finish off good work. Being a cherry picker is a negative, it means you sat back and waited for someone else to get the ball and you get a cheap easy goal.

Hence why its a negative and why people seldom use that term as one of endearment.

Dont get me wrong, i get where your coming from, but you have the wrong term.

You guys are so far off the winner!

This years Winner by the length of the hume highway is Tarkyn Lockyer!!!!!

I have attended a few collingwood games and the goals he has kicked this year have been cherry picked to highest degree....

That's only because Hawkins always passes off rather then take the shot if he is further then 35m out. Hawkins takes plenty of marks within range, but is far too unselfish and willing to dish off to a teammate. I'm starting to think it's a weakness of his, he needs to be more selfish and take a shot if he's within range.

Calls of Lloyd are ridiculous - he's a traditional full forward, where else he is meant to hang around?
